How many ATHEISTS don't believe that they came from FISH?
by hooberus inhow many atheists are there who don't believe that they came from fish ?.
the outspoken ones that i have come into contact with always seem to (when pressed anyway) advocate such a thing.
many of them surely even put something like it on their car, such as:.

"In fact, that earlier ancestor would certainly be called an ape or monkey in popular speech by anyone who saw it. Since the terms ape and monkey are defined by popular usage, man's ancestors were apes or monkeys (or successively both)."
What does popular speech contribute to science? Science aims to overcome folklore.

Now back to the fish thing.
If you don't define fish as modern-day fish, I believe we came from fish.

I don't believe I come from fish. I believe that both me and fish had a common ancestor in a very very distant past.

Doing the best I can on the Global Warming...
by Gregor inthis winter is not over but it has, so far, been brutal.
in our part of the world we have seen weeks of sub-freezing temps and blizzards that have left us virtually isolated.
we live very modestly, no 10,000 sq ft mansions, no private jets or limosines, but, none the less, we do what we can to speed up global warming.

The GlblWrming crowd is getting blind sided by mother nature and real scientific data and just like that other phoney religion they are going to see how far they can stretch their followers deeply felt belief in the story they have cooked up.
Maybe you could let your real scientific data peer review.

Darwin was Wrong
by Earnest inthis is the cover article of a recent issue of new scientist and as this is a common debate on the forum it might be of interest.
darwinian evolution is usually portrayed as a tree of life from which every living thing originates and which splits into many branches, each branch representing a new species.
since the structure and function of dna was discovered it has been expected that the more closely species are related the more alike their dna ought to be.

Intriguing topic! Thanks for starting a thread on this.
However, this article claims that the descent of species is not exclusively vertical, which is what Darwin expected, but that species routinely swap genetic material with other species, often across huge taxonomic distances.
Related to horizontal evolution is endosymbiosis.

For the Atheists... I Need some Answers....
by AllTimeJeff ini proudly admit at the start of this that i am very non supportive of organized religion, the bible, worshipping jesus and the like.
i have frequently argued against theistic themes, joining atheists in their arguements.
i view most religion as a cynical system of power for their religious leaders.. yet i am not an atheist.

I've found meaning and purpose in the natural world. God's non-existence has been very liberating to me.

Interesting article on evolution
by Caedes inhttp://open2.net/sciencetechnologynature/worldaroundus/evolution_p.html.
a very interesting article on the history of evolutionary theory which has three leading scientists talking about the idea that evolution has stopped or slowed down in humans.. .

On what basis can you make that claim? Actions or learned abilities are not recorded in our genes.
I was thinking about epigenetic changes like the one described in my previous post on lactose tolerance. That could be the manner how cultural practices may feed back into the genome on a relativelt short time span.

Humans are no longer in isolated pockets like they were even a few hundred plus years ago. The world is a small place; people intermingle. This makes it much harder for genetic changes to propagate.
Environmental pressures are often rendered moot by our current technologies and abilities. There are people thriving in all sorts of climates nowadays.
Medical science can keep people with abnormalities alive to reproduce, preventing that trait from getting "weeded out" by natural selection.
I think the reasons you give show why speciation, but not evolution within the human species has become impossible. Isolation, for instance, could have spurred speciation. This doesn't prevent the human species as a whole to evolve very quickly. Incrasing mobility, the use of technology, must be reflected, somehow, in our genetics.
