Are there any dead-heads here? Does anyone have a song that they especially like? As everyone knows, The Dead were not a studio band, so I am particularly interested in people's favorite concert renditions of a particular song either in their memories or on bootleg tapes [For example, "Ripple" or "St.Steven" or "Dark Star" or "Sugar Magnolia", recorded in Head Trip Colluseum, San Francisco in '74] . I'm also interested in people's concert experiences. Did anyone see them perform in Europe in 1972?

Planet of the Apes
by startingover inwhile i sit here watching the original movie, i can't help comparing most believers i know and their mindset with those stinkin' apes.

"Most believers" whom you know? Most believers in what? And specfically how are these believers like the apes featured in the film? As I recall, the apes were in fact representative of human society - the whole spectrum of human society. From the enlightened and compassionate to the cruel, ignorant and sadistic. As I recall, the apes were stereotype - the Soldier/Warrior always ready to fight and kill: the Teacher/Sage/ Scientist who was willing to research and challenge idees recues and prejudices; the Ignoramus who for various reasons did not want to challenge idees recues; and so on. In short, the ape society was a mirror of human society. So, could you kindly elaborate as to your meaning?

The Borg's Current Take On The King of the North
by Rapunzel inreading aleman's intelligent and erudite posts in regard to prophecies and other things biblical got me to thinking and prompted me to ask the following question - just what is the watchtower bible and tract society's current [as of this month, february 2008] interpretation on the identity of the wicked witch king of the north?
when i was in - many moons ago in the late 1970's - the king of the north was depicted, if my memory serves me correctly, as the soviet union.
but as the expression goes, s*** happens.

I, too, vaguely recall reading that in certain circles of Witnesses, the rumor had it that the King of the North might possibly be identified with Islam. I found this conjecture odd, given that although large populations of Islamic adherents can be found in many countries throughout the world, both Indonesia and Malaysia - the world's first and second [respectively] largest Islamic countries - are tropical, Asian nations in the southern part of our northern hemisphere. Moreover, most of the other predominantly Islamic countries located in North Africa and sub-Sahara Africa are also located in the southern part of our hemisphere. In other words, in contrast to North America and Europe, most Islamic countries are situated much closer to the Equator.

World Traveller - In today's morning edition of my city newspaper, I read about yesterday's tragic accident involving the motorcycle police officer who was escorting Clinton's motorcade. The report did not make onto the first page; in fact it was a very short article appearing within the newspaper. In any case, it was just as I supposed: the accident occurred at the rear of Clinton's motorcade, therefore she was probably totally unaware of the accident when it happened. As the newspaper reported, Clinton displayed respect and compassion by cancelling a large scheduled rally and visiting the officer's family in the hospital.
I have to agree with BlackPearl - World Traveller is indeed acting like a prick in accusing me [without any basis whatsoever] of a lack of compassion. Just a procurer exploits young women, so is world traveller "pimping" [exploiting] this tragedy to suit his own personal agenda. Therefore, it is world traveller who is displaying an utter lack of compassion. To paraphrase the rapper, Ice-T, there are 99 reasons for not voting for Clinton, but this tragic accident ain't one. Moreover, it is an egregious and shameful violation of decency to "pimp" [exploit] this tragedy to advance a personal agenda. Whatever personal or political grudge that world traveller has against Clinton, he should not exploit this tragedy and use it as a weapon to hammer Clinton.
I agree with a former poster who said that Clinton's campaign may already have been derailed even before the tragic accident in question. However, I truly am utterly unable to grasp world traveller's point; I am totally unable to fathom how this tragedy might have any negative consequences or repercussions on her camaign. For the dead officer's family, this is a horrific tragedy from which they will never totally recover. But in terms of the national presidential camaign process, this tragedy will not even register a "blip" on the screen.
I notice that world traveller has been silent on this issue. I suppose that it would be expecting too much to ask for an apology from a coward. However, I do have a suggestion for the ole traveller: Instead of trying to exploitively "pimp" this tragedy to advance a personal agenda, I suggest that world traveller might perhaps make a contribution to help the surviving family members. Perhaps world traveller could contribute to a trust fund in the officer's memory. There may well be a trust fund established already by the Dallas police department. Perhaps world traveller could contact the Dallas police for information. If there is no trust fund yet, perhaps such a fund could be established. In any case, I would ask world traveller to refrain from acting in such a craven manner. Pimping is for cowards.

world traveller - I'm astounded that you could accuse me of a lack of compassion in my heart. For sixteen years, I worked with students. I was a professor. I loved my students as if they were my own children. And I once attended the funeral of one of my students who was killed by a drunk driver. I have as much compassion in my heart as any person. For you to accuse me of a lack of compassion is despicable.
When I was a prof, one of the courses that I taught was English reading. You would do well to take such a course. In my post, I said that what happend was a horrific tragedy for the family. What more can I say? What other words are there? And, yet, I still don't understand your point. What happened was a tragedy, but it was also an accident.
As I said, I also used to ride a motorcycle; so I know that they are dangerous machines. The officer in question ran into a curb. When you hit a curb on a motorcycle, chances are you are going to take a tumble. When you take a tumble on a motorcycle, there is a good chance that you will suffer serious injury or death.
Again, I still don't know how this tragic accident could reflect badly on Clinton. There is every possiblility that she was totally unaware of the accident when it happened. I wonder, and I am asking you, what it is that she could have done? She cancelled the scheduled rally. What more can she do? Do you somehow blame her for what happened? Do you think that she could have somehow prevented it from happening? She can take the blame for many other things. But for this tragic accident?!?! Do you think that the American public will somehow blame her? For what?

As there is no more Soviet Union, the whole "prophecy" by the borg gets flushed down the toilet, which leads me to ask again: Just who or what is now the King of the North according to the organization? Just who or what currently occupies this position of opprobrium? -

Aleman - The word is spelled "prophecies," vato. That's p-r-o-p-h-e-c-i-e-s. Don't they teach you how to spell in the Kingdumb Misery School? In regard to biblical prophecies, the sad truth is that these "prophecies" were in fact written many, many years after the depicted events transpired. It's lamentable, but true. All of the biblical prophets "foretold" things that had already happened.
