I wonder exactly how it's worded. Very big difference between saying "NO" to marriage versus just discouraging it by encouraging those who choose to stay single for the ministry. If they just discourage it I bet most people will just ignore it and continue to get married at 18 like always.

WOW!!! Just found out from someone who went to the one day assembly....
by Lady Liberty inhello friends... just found out that at the recent one day assembly they are now really discouraging people from getting married!!!!!
they will lose young ones like crazy if they start telling them that they cannot get married...what are these sexually frusterated young people to do??
you cannot masterbate, you cannot have sex outside of marriage (not that i would encourage it either, but...), now you cannot even get married?????

Most Annoying Things That Happen At JW Meetings
by LittleSister intoday i was remembering how angry i used to get at the meetings and all the little irritations that in the end would just make my blood boil these included:.
prayers that go on foreverstudy or wt conductors still taking comments when its clear that the point has been covered 20 times alreadymeetings over running by more than 5 minsmy favourite was this one elder who would play guess the point i am thinking of.
he would keep rephrasing the question from the wt until someone would bring up the point he was thinking of.

I HATED WT comments that just repeated the paragraph. It insulted my intelligence to just regurgitate some basic sentences that were written for a fifth grader! I refused.
Even worse is when I did answer (because my wife pressured me) people would say "I enjoyed your comment". What did you enjoy? I just repeated what was written in the paragraph.
Looking back I realize the WT study created a lot of dissonance with me...

Contradicting ideas about Satan and governing ourselves
by PYRAMIDSCHEME inwhile listening to the special talk on sunday the speaker made a statement about something we have all heard a million times: satan is in control of this system and its governments and is the cause of mankind's ills.
but the statement made me think.
we all were taught that we are, during this time of the end, proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that man is not capable of guiding his own step, in other words we need god.

PS, very good point! I never thought of that before!
It's like God tied a big weight on us, threw is in the deep end, and is blaming us for not being able to stay afloat.
The more you think of all this, the more silly the concept of Satan really is...

2010 - Year of the Governing Body?
by lepermessiah inlet me explain by what i am getting at without sounding like captain obvious!
i am actually excited about this since i think this could help assist a ton of people out of this organization!!.
i believe that the governing body is stepping up efforts to emphasize their unconditional rulership - every wt study article seems to make reference to their authority.

I hope they keep clamping down on control. To me this 'worship of the governing body' was one of the biggest areas of dissonance I had, and I imagine many others must feel this way. Deep down it felt so wrong that every talk, article, and prayer would mention the GB, more than god or Jesus!
This tactic may have worked in the past, but I think there's a huge risk that this will backfire, adding major dissonance, causing people to think and ultimately wake up.

If there is a God, is he an atheist?
by DT inof course, any god would believe in himself, but would he believe in someone greater than himself?
would he postulate an external cause for the realm in which he lives?
you might expect that a hypothetical god would be all knowing, so he would know if there is another greater god, but he couldn't know if there is another realm that he doesn't and can't know about.

DT, That was really good!
I love abstract thinking like this... What a great point! Very cool, and I'll have to think about it some more.
Once I brought up a similar thought in service... What if God was actually Satan claiming to be god (wolf in sheep's clothing) and this God (Satan as god) convinced the world that the real God is actually the devil... so we'd actually be worshipping Satan while thinking we were worshipping God. No one liked to think of that :)

Was it encouraging or defeating when you heard counsel to do more ?
by troubled mind insmall things from our recent elder visit keep popping up in my mind .
one thing we discussed was how much pressure we felt in the congregation to keep doing more , more ,more .......i said that it caused us to never feel we were ever good enough !
if you are not meeting the national average you were treated like a slacker .

It was that the 'more' was a lot of more waste. When you see the total lack of productivity in the field, where you can talk to a very small number of people in 2 hours, then 'more' was a bother because it was a total waste.

I wasn't allowed, but a 9 year old was. Somehow a 9 year old was more spiritual than I was... That really ticked me off until I realized that fewer 'privilidges' meant easier fade!
The brothers never realized that. They take away 'privilidges' as a punishment, but actually it had the opposite effect. They took away my reading and praying at book study, plus mics (never took it away because I never had it), but losing that made missing meetings much easier. If they wanted me to stay, they should have given me MORE, to incent me to come. Messed up.

Zeitgeist, just nonsense? Please explain.
by cyberjesus ini recently watched the movie along with the second part thanks to several people mentioning it on this forum.
i have seen both people against and pro.
what are your thoughts?
-

What I liked about the movie, is it was the first major thing to make me truly think that Jesus maybe didn't exist (as a true savior). Whether the facts are right or not (and I do agree that some things are quite far-fetched), it caused me to think more critically, and I continued to further research the Bible and Jesus himself. It helped me see that Jesus and the Bible are just rehashed myths, and are no more unique than the other myths.
The creators of Zeitgeist state that their intention is to spur thought and discussions, and for me it truly did.

Need help anti-witnessing!
by Robert7 inhello everyone, so my wife has a friend-of-a-friend who has been studying with the witnesses for a few months now.
she wants to present some information to dissuade her from studying further.
so i need some ammo!.

Bluecanary, this is good. I like the first point about questioning the teachings of the FDS. One of the recent WT articles reminded everyone that everyone should accept what is taught without question. That's a good point to start with... thanks!

Hello everyone, so my wife has a friend-of-a-friend who has been studying with the Witnesses for a few months now. She wants to present some information to dissuade her from studying further. So I need some ammo!
Any suggestions as to what to present? I need to be careful to be subtle, because I'm sure she's already prepared for attacks from Satan and his apostates.
I know this seems obvious, but although I'm now a proud apostate for a few years and it all makes sense to me, I want to do this right.
Thanks for all your suggestions!
