  What finally pushed you over the edge?

  was there one issue or incident, final straw, so-to-speak, that made you leave once and for all?

  i know there was for me.. i had been having doubts for years, and had stopped believing it was the truth.

  but i labored on as a jw, in part because of my family, and in part because i had invested so much of myself in it.

  For me it was the worship of the Governing Body. EVERY prayer, SO many meetings and WT pubs would talk abou the Governing Body. I had SUCH dissonance because it felt so wrong. I thought God and Jesus were to be on top, and the GB was just a channel... so why give them so much attention.

  I have heard talks that defined idolatry. They said if you give excessive and undue attention to something (like sports, cars, etc) then it's idolatry. So to me the worship of the GB was idolatry.

  I of course had many many doubts, but this was the last straw...

  $6,600 Expenses For a One-Day Assembly At a Fully-Paid-Up Hall? WTF!

  the wife just got back from a one-day special circuit meeting (or whatever they call it) at the regional assembly hall.

  it's got a capacity of about 1,200, fully paid for, staffed by volunteers and in use for less than eight hours.

  then the guy making the announcement tells the crowd that the one-day expenses for the gig was about $6,600 (?!!!)...

  I've thought about that too when I've been to assemblies. I wonder if it's a fully loaded average. Even though it's used for 8 hours, it is still probably heated and cooled every day. Plus add taxes and maintenance. That being said, that's $343,000 per year at $6,600 per weekend, so that sounds quite high if it's paid up.

  It is not possible to accept the fact that The flood of Noah was a rehash of the prehistoric oral flood stories. Why? Well, Jesus believed in a future day of global judgement, just as in the day of Noah. Knowledgeable people accept that the flood of Noah was not 40 days of rain that covered the highest mountain. The son of god should have known this, too. Losing respect for Jesus means losing repect for the authority of the Watchtower Org, too.

  Great point! It's another collapsing house of cards! You have to support other lies/myths to keep up your own lies.

  WinstonChurchill: Thanks. I got the 'surveillance camera in the sky' line from a Richard Dawkins quote that I love that retorts the idea that you must have God to be a good person. I have become a big believer in the idea that you control your own destiny. Obviously things happen out of your control, but a lot of things in life you do have control over, and can choose to make the right decisions to better (or worsen) yourself.

  There's another quote I love that I cannot find exactly, but basically says "You do good because you fear God, I do good even though I don't believe in God".

  Along that line... I travel regularly for work, and many times would hang out at pubs and bars. If the world was full of sex-crazed people, why was it I was never hit on or seduced on the road, where I could have been 'temped by Satan'? And when I left the cult, nothing changed.

  The reason why, I wasn't looking for it and I didn't go to questionable places that would put my marriage in jeopardy. Looking back I did have women talk to me, and I did talk to women, but I showed no interest and they (or I) moved on. You control your own destiny, not the great surveillance camera in the sky.

  Same goes with 'worldly guys'. Why is it so many people in 'Satan's System' still can't get laid? Becuse it's not as crazy as the WT makes it out to be.

  SHOCK! As A Family Of 5 Is DF'd On The Same Night!!!

  the whole congregation came to a complete and utter shock as a family of 5 was df'd on the same night.... apparently the father was to be df'd for apostacy.

  he was given a chance to appeal.

  went home to discuss it with family.

  As an active JW, did you find the Memorial to be special?

  even as active jws, my wife and i always found the memorial to be anti-climatic, overhyped.

  it was supposed to be the most important event of the year, but it just felt like another meeting.

  i just never felt compelled to have to go.
