Jonestown and Watchtower Society--Similarities
by GinnyTosken inrecently in another thread, dannybear mentioned jim jones and the mass suicides at jonestown.
about two years ago when the issue of cults in france was a hot topic in ex-jw discussions, i became curious about jim jones and his followers.
i had seen the news reports and horrific footage, but i wanted to understand how a man could convince 638 of his adult followers to kill themselves and 276 children.. for me, jim jones's story is also close to home.

Please Help: Disfellowshipping--Scriptural View
by GinnyTosken ini'm hoping you all can help.. an active jehovah's witness joined us in chat tonight and was dismayed that this site slams witnesses for trying to follow the bible in matters such as disfellowshipping.
this chatter feels that many people here complain about the society's policies without offering evidence that the policies are without scriptural backing.. i must be at work very early monday morning, so i could not stay in chat as long as i wished.
i told the chatter i would start this thread so that s/he could gather information and opinions from several sources.. in chat i was trying to present a point that i remembered from in search of christian freedom, about how disfellowshipping was meant to be a personal choice, not a decision forced on the congregation by a small committee.

How Do You Handle Hypocrisy?
by GinnyTosken inhow do you handle hypocrisy?
appears in the november 15, 2001 watchtower.
the article intrigues me because instead of a clear-cut condemnation of hypocrisy, the article wavers back and forth.. first, the writer defines hypocrisy:.

A Texan and Totalitarianism
by GinnyTosken incongress is now reviving a proposal killed last year by senator phil gramm, the texas republican who was then chairman of the senate banking committee.
the bill, introduced by the clinton administration, would give the treasury secretary broad power to bar foreign countries and banks from access to the american financial market unless they cooperated with money-laundering investigations.
it was strongly opposed by the banking industry and mr. gramm.. "i was right then and i am right now" in opposing the bill, mr. gramm said yesterday.

Boston Tea Party--A Terrorist Act?
by GinnyTosken ini'm not sure what i think about this myself and am curious to hear your opinions.. here is an account from paul johnson's a history of the american people.. ginny.
the origins of the boston tea party had nothing to do with america.
the east india company had got itself into a financial mess.

Taliban, Lot, and Men of Sodom
by GinnyTosken inreading an article in the new york times, i came across a description of the taliban and mullah omar, the man who started the movement:.
isolating the taliban has been easy but ineffective because they insulate themselves.
television is banned.

Compassion for the Enemy
by GinnyTosken ina few paragraphs from the elements of love by sam keen.. ginny.
the flower of compassion can bloom at any moment, even in the ambience of enmity.. a friend told me a story of a kind that has been repeated countless times in the history of warfare.
"we were in a firefight not too far from da nang.

How do you spell God?
by GinnyTosken inthis summer i wanted to give my son a religious education.
by "religious education" i mean that i wanted to educate him about various religions without indoctrinating him to believe any specific way.
i want him to be knowledgable enough to be culturally literate and able to make an informed decision about his spiritual needs.. we have been reading together in genesis, but i also browsed at the library to find a book that might give us more detail about specific religious beliefs.
