I can assure you that having a good Gulyas with plenty of hot Hungarian paprika will definitely result in "pressure". Not usually on the chest, but pressure anyway.

Lots of people from nearby EU countries go to demon-infested Hungary to have their teeth fixed at discount prices. Which leads me to the question: what do you do when you have a demon in your filling? Punish it with some McDonald's "food"? Drown it in alcohol? Burn it with chili?

good news alternative energy .

while on the subject, we could already start to reduce and eventually eliminate oil, at least to the point where we would only need to use our own resources and may buy oil from mexico and russia.. solar: while seemingly forgotten, this is still a growing industry.

I imagine there are other I have not mentioned. BUT --- We Can do it!!!

I'm sure it CAN be done (as but one example, the EU has *significantly* lower per capita CO2 output, yet pretty much the same standard of living), but I'm afraid it'll have to hurt. Nobody's going to switch from oil to alternative energy unless either petroleum gets too expensive or alternative sources get *significantly* cheaper (when?).

Now, which US politician will have the balls to stick out his neck and propose massive taxation (or possibly import restrictions) on petroleum products? I'm not holding my breath.

I posted the same link on Beliefnet.com and it got one response from a loyal poster claiming it was an extremely biased article.

Well, it's not free of opinion, but it's definitely a VERY good article (I didn't like the second Guardian article, which apparently lost a lot of "balance" due to editing).

One point appears to be a factual error, though:

But then, last summer, the elders met in Brooklyn and, after an apparent divine revelation – but more precisely following a vote of eight to four – decided that in certain circumstances the transfusion of blood components such as plasma might be acceptable, so long as the recipient genuinely repented afterwards. This was not publicised to congregations and, under questioning, was said to be no change at all.

Unless I'm completely mistaken, the entire "change" was that taking forbidden blood components would not result in a judicial investigation and likely disfellowshiping, but in more or less automatic disassociation. The outcome, of course, being exactly the same, so that's really not much of a change at all.

Michael Jackson still a JW!

last night on one of the entertainment magazines shows they said that michael jackson just gave an interview to tv guide.

in it he says he is still a jw and still goes door to door in disguise.

i had heard a rumour recently that he still donated a lot of money to the society but had no clue he still claimed to be one.

its ok, i'm just being mischievious.. so graham norton was on channel four this evening in japan, what a very peculiar race!!.

which countries do you think that you could not visit for knowing that when you were there, you'd just fool about laughing at the absurdity of the culture and why?

Well, I'm not talking about dying from laughter, but I still think that people who measure small distances in fractions of inches and understand 10/12/2001 as 12 October 2001 must be living in a pretty bizarre culture .

The higher-ups, maybe. Rank and file JWs still seem to think that their religion is at the focus of public attention and growing like crazy. At least that's what the JWs that I know seem to think. Nevermind that they have the sad figures in black on white right in the mags.

IMHO, the only way the decline could be stopped would be "new light" on contraceptives.

Ah, so the US decline in baptism is still alive and well.

It'll be interesting to see whether this is the case for Europe, too. IIRC, the baptism decrease started much earlier there (in some Western European countries, baptism has dropped about two thirds(!) in the past decade - for instance, Denmark, Norway, France, Austria...).

I generally think that the baptism figures are more interesting to gauge trends than the avg. publishers. After all (as metatron pointed out), it's easy to write down a couple of numbers on a piece of paper. Memorial attendance figures are pretty much worthless. Baptism, however, is a clear sign of commitment. At least more so than the other statistics.

Sorry, but I've seen this so much in this forum, other forums, everywhere, that I'm afraid it's going to infect the dictionary soon from general misuse. Drives me nuts!

I understand your concern, Seeker. Spelling and grammer mistakes aren't a problem per say, there occurrence is completely normal as most people just aren't compatabile with written language. But its an infectious phenomena, and it's future implications could be dramatic. It should be considered worse then apostacy. Maybe their should be counciling for victims of other's bad spelling, like me.
