College is considered to be the great evil. I have heard of Svc Dpt personnel saying that parents are "sacrificing their children" on the alter of higher education. If you are going to college, your mtg attendance is scrutinized, your service is scrutinized- the assumption is that college will be the reason for all of your problems in life. Elders are removed if they are supporting a child going to college (paying for it or providing financial support), and non-elder parents are subjected to extreme pressure if a kid decides to go to college. Makes you wonder- what is it that is so dangerous about education, ideas, thinking.....

"This Shows We're Living In The Last Days"......Your response???
by minimus inatrocities happen all the time.
student mass murders, genocides, the ozone layer, the environment------you name it----it all points to what witnesses assert as proof that this means we're living in the "last days of the last days".
how would you respond to such ones?.

Black Death- Plague kills 1/3 of Europe- last days??
Rome invades Jerusalem and kills most of the inhabitants- last days??
American Civil war- highest casualty count of any war in American history- last days?
Today- 30 killed in a school- tragic, but pales in comparison with the suffering of the past.

If most men decided to wear a beard today, would the JW's follow?
by JH inthe jw's will say that in jesus time, it was ok to have a beard because it was their custom back then, and today jw's should not have a beard because it's not our custom to have one today.. since the world is ever changing, it will continue changing, and beards might come back and be popular once more.. it's only a cheap excuse on their part, because they will never accept beards, even if every man wore one today..

I remember hearing at Bethel that until about 15 years ago a caucasian brother with a moustache was looked down on (not used in positions of authority, etc). Hispanic and black brothers were allowed to have a moustache because "its their culture."
I'm not making this up....

by DannyHaszard indo jehovah's witnesses have free choice on blood transfusions?do jehovah's witnesses have free choice on blood transfusions?.
vancouver sun (subscription), canada -.
a group of top academics as well as former jehovah's witnesses are raising stark warnings about the ethical ramifications of a vancouver court case delving ... the watchtower society, the legal and political body representing the six-million-member religion, portrays itself as a champion of religious freedom.

A guiding principal
by lrkr inlike many of you whose posts i've read, i am having trouble not loosing all of my faith at once.
when the cloak starts to fall, you begin to doubt everything.
one thing i think i believe, though- a person needs a set of principles to use as a moral compass.

Like many of you whose posts I've read, I am having trouble not loosing all of my faith at once. When the cloak starts to fall, you begin to doubt everything. One thing I think I believe, though- a person needs a set of principles to use as a moral compass. Something to help them know how to determine the "right" path.
The principle that is in the Hippocratic oath seems to be a good guiding principle- Do good where possible, but above all- do no harm.
The way this is affecting my thinking is that I dont want to go out in a flash, with a big DA letter or something- just fade gradually. Primarily, this is to shield my family from harm. They really have "drank the Kool-Aid." They really believe that if you are not a believing, active JW, you will be among the 90-95% of the earths population who gets the axe at the big A. (Sounds so gruesome to me now). So a glorious crash would really crush them emotionally.
I'm not posting this to advocate this approach or judge others who have picked a different path. Just spouting...What has your experience been?? Where has your search for a guiding principle led??

This article, and those like it (repeated every 12-16 months) are a core part of the programming process for children. Obedience, fear, be like Jesus, fear (could die), obedience. Amazing how you cant see it even when listening to it year after year.

Thank you all for the warm welcome! We tried the "low profile" approach for the last few years. This year we wanted a real Birthday party for our 8 year old. We were tired of explaining it away as a "special day." So we went for it. Full on party at the YMCA (I know- we're really asking for it!! Talk about putting the P in Pagan).
So now I meet with the "goon squad" tomorrow night. (Hard for an 8 year old to keep a secret!!) Just trying to figure out next moves. To me Christmas is an obvious one (they can get you for celebrating a false religious holiday)- but Birthdays have no religious connection.
Thanks for the Colossians quote- seems like Job's children also celebrated birthdays. Maybe thats why they got whacked by the windstorm.
