BOTR...Wouldn't a congressman or senator be guilty of true insider trading if he/she owned at least 10% of the shares of a company and they had information that wasn't public knowledge?

There have been lots of studies regarding cognitive development in children. It does develop in stages and you would be surprised at how accurately early childhood development studies have narrowed the timeline down....for instance, the period when a child goes from concrete thinking to more abstract thinking. Child Psychology is an amazing field. I studied Jean Piaget theories in college as it applied to early childhood development. There are new models out there now, but Piaget is still a good place to start, imo.
It's never too early to start teaching critical thinking. Are you good at telling stories? Stories and games followed by logical questions a child can comprehend is helpful. There are absolutely thousands of books to develop thinking skills in children. Look for the ones that are award winners. criticalthinking.com has a list of particular awards to look for.

Should I say something?
by Flat_Accent inmy parents are quite popular in their congregation, and they're constantly inviting brothers and sisters over.
as i've been part of the org for 19 years i know all these people very well, and before i da'd myself i was good friends with all of them.
every other friday they invite a single brother round for dinner, just to cheer him up a bit.

Do you live there? If so, their house their rules.
You see it as disrespectful, but being JWs, they see it as encouraging you to return.
IMO, you have two choices. Have something else planned that night, or sit there respectfully and plant your own seeds gently.
By the way, why would any single JW brother sit at the dinner table with a self-avowed apostate.

Sounds like a good letter. I have one thought to add. The powers that be...the ones that could actually take action....need to know that the Watchtower Society and its followers are allowed to deceive and outright lie under certain circumstances.
I think more people, including those in government positions, should be told what THEOCRATIC WARFARE means in its fullest sense.
The recent trial of the honor killing of his daughter by a muslim father has brought this type of deception into the light. Islam has something similar. I forget what it is called, but a muslim is allowed to lie if it means protecting sharia law, something very similar to theocratic warfare.

I think a lot of older (maybe younger ones) JW's are going to attempt/commit suicide....(READ)
by Joliette ini've been in lurkmode lately, but with the news that i heard about don cornelius dying, it had me thinking...as this world goes on, and people are coping with this world...i think a lot jw's are going to realize that the end of the world isnt coming...there gonna become more despert, the realities of having to work, pay off debts, etc.
a lot of jw's are going to realize that no magical sky daddy is come and 'take away there problems' and i think the more that they start to realize this, they get older, and there gonna start hating the reality that they have to face.
i had a good friend who's father-in- law (who was a ministrial servant) who had bipolar disorder, killed himself in his car back in 2007. it was sad.

Years ago I told my JW friend to PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE plan for retirement. Don't count on armageddon coming soon and taking care of everything. Of course, she huffed and scoffed at my lack of faith, but, fortunately she must have listened because as she approaches retirement, she has secured herself financially.
I remember the era of the 1975 idiocy. I remember older (50's) JW couples selling off their homes and living off their savings to go into the full time preaching work. Back then I half-way admired their guts, but secretly wondered what they were going to do if armageddon didn't come. I faded away within the next few years. I don't know what happened to them. I shudder to think.

How will Obamacare affect the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society?
by The_Present_Truth ini'm not sure if this has been addressed here or not but i've been curious as to how obamacare stands to affect the wtbts and those serving at it's branches in the usa?
has anyone looked at this?
seems the catholics are all shook up about what obamacare stands to "make" them provide their "employees".

Hasn't the WTS moved its operations to Canada?
It's my understanding that it's the hospitals and other charitable organizations the Catholics provide, not just for Catholics, but all people, that they are concerned about. Obamacare allows a Catholic Hospital to opt out of the abortion and birth control requirement IF the hospital only treats Catholics. But, of course, Catholic hospitals treat all people.
The JWs don't have to worry about it.....they don't have hospitals OR charitable organizations that help people.

My critical thoughts about Paul
by I Want to Believe inso this is an area of thought i had before even before i fully took the apostate plunge.
i started noticing that almost everything about the congregation pointed back to paul.. "do not forsake the gathering of yourselves together.
" not jesus' words.

I started thinking this way about Paul in the 80's. Critical thinking is good. I'm glad you're here.
