I think the chance of intelligent life arising is astronomically small, but the universe is astronomically big. There's an equation called the Drake equation, although it's not much more than a thought experiment since we really can't ascertain all the variables.
N = R* × fp × ne × fl × fi × fc × L
where:
N is the number of civilizations in our galaxy, with which we might hope to be able to communicate; and
R* is the rate of star formation in our galaxy
fp is the fraction of those stars that have planets
ne is the average number of planets that can potentially support life per star that has planets
fl is the fraction of the above that actually go on to develop life at some point
fi is the fraction of the above that actually go on to develop intelligent life
fc is the fraction of civilizations that develop a technology that releases detectable signs of their existence into space
L is the length of time such civilizations release detectable signals into space.
Carl Sagan played with it on one of the Cosmos episodes, and depending on your speculations the universe could be teeming with life, or it could be relatively barren. Looking at the pictures of the Hubble deep field survey I think that there are certainly other civilizations out in the universe somewhere, even if you'd put very low odds for each item chances are still good there's been a handful of civilizations in the universe.
Have we been visited though? I think most alien encounters can be explained away as tricks of the human mind, or not giving human ingenuity enough credit. I can't say for certain that we have never been visited by beings from another planet, but I think it's unlikely. -

Did you ACTUALLY do this?
by Frequent_Fader_Miles inas part of your "dedication and baptism" did you actually go to jehovah in prayer and "dedicate" your life to him prior to your baptism?
at the time when the elders were reviewing the "questions" with me, i hadn't a clue that i was supposed to do this until one of them asked directly.
i answered in the affirmative anyway ... wanting the incessant questioning to be over as quickly as possible.

Yes I prayed quite fervently, I bought into it hook, line, and sinker. I felt pretty darn spiritual.

If you could spend 1 year in perfect happiness but afterward would remember
by new boy innothing of the experience would you do so?..................if not, why not?
-
SacrificialLoon
My original thought was no I would not want to if I couldn't remember, but then the thought occured to me that we ultimately don't remember *anything* anyway, so what's one year when confronted with an infinity of oblivion? Maybe I would like to spend one year.

Science question for essay.
by winnie inozti the ice man.
how do you think science has helped to unlock and preserve the past?.
any ideas welcome..

By applying the scientific method we have learned how to harness the energy contained in fossil fuels. In addition we have also learned through science that the burning of fossil fuels is likely contributing to the warming of the planet which has caused the glaciers to retreat revealing Otzi the iceman!
Seriously though I'd pick something that started as a hypothesis and as our understanding grew we were able to make tools to measure it. Like how our understanding of radioactivity lead to tools for carbon dating. -

WTS Teachings on Online Gaming/Video Games

I first thought WTS ment Want To Sell. I've played online games too much. I don't see how they could justify playing it with all the witchcraft, necromancy, violence, and scantily clad women there's a game called Lineage II, and some of the female avatars look like they just came out of an S&M shop. It's a virtual sin fest!

First time I listened to this song I was driving with a friend from east Texas back to the Dallas area, and we laughed so hard we were crying. The song almost killed us! -

Without Any Observer Can The Universe Exist?
by frankiespeakin inwhat do you think?
it is kind of like the question: if a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it does it make a noise as it crashes to the ground?

Maybe it'd be like Schrodinger's cat and be in both states until observed.
