Why not?

You know, I've yet to meet a JW who can explain this
by Lady Zombie ini know that has probably been covered ad infinitum on jwd.
so...... if jehovah is omnipotent, then there is nothing he can't do and nothing he doesn't know.. and, according to jws (as well as most other religions), god is love.
therefore he had to have known, even before creating all of creation, what would happen.

The growing irrelevance of the Watchtower message
by drew sagan inin many ways it appears as if the watchtower movement is slowing down.
a number of changes over the last few years certainly show that the watchtower is in a period of transition.
they have cut back on the number of magazines they print as well as lowered the cost of production by eliminating things like hard backed books.

I think you've got this spot on Drew. Looking at my old Congregation, I just can't imagine how it can still be going strong in 30 years if the Organisation doesn't change the structure at all, when I see the people who will be running it in a few years, the people in my age group, I just know not enough will be able to continue the expansion. Example, the youngest elder/MS who was not raised in the religion is in his early 50s (The PO, SO, and Sec are all retired, in their 60s/70s.) There a few elders in there 30s, and MSs in their 20s, but ALL of them were raised in the religion. There hasn't been a non-foreign adult brought into my Congregation in years.
Where will they bring outside people in? With a 37% retention rate, they cannot depend on those raised in forever. -

My Dad Told Me I'll Never Retire...But I Should Still Have a 401k
by B_Deserter inhe was telling me that by 2020, none of "this" (the weeeerld) is going to be here, but it's still a good idea to have a 401(k) because you can use it for other things, like a down payment on a house or something.
then he started talking about how he never thought he would retire, and now he's faced with it.
i just kind of thought that was funny.

My Dad thinks he'll never have to retire. He's 55. He's also going to be wrong.

Recently I sat down with my Dad and showed him this article I'd printed off:
http://women.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/women/the_way_we_live/article4014800.ece
Afterwards, I asked him, simply, "Should we trust this guy, and put our faith in his prophecies? If not, why not?"
He refused to answer the question because he knew where I was going, but maybe your son would get better luck with his elders. -

Do the religious have higher morals than the non-religious?
by digderidoo inok, i was going to ask whether christians have higher morals, but i thought that other religions have the same kind of morals too.. when i look at those who sincerely follow their religion, i think that they do have a higher morality than those who do not follow some sort of scriptural guidelines.. this is not to say that the religious have a monopoly on morality, or to say that some religious people are not hypocritical in doing what they say, rather than what they do.
but as a whole it seems to me that someone with a religious upbringing has higher standards than someone without.. now some would say that higher standards or lower standards are defined by society, so therefore by whose definition do they have higher morals.
this would be a fair assumption.

Gopher,
I get annoyed when people from either group act is if their belief or non-belief somehow makes them better than the other, and I think both can be just as guilty as the other. You haven't come across this way to me, quite the opposite in fact. I have a lot of respect for you. -

I wonder if "the non-religious" claim "the religious" only stay moral because they want a reward to make themselves feel superior?
In answer to your question, I don't know. Most people seem to disagree, but maybe your average American is more moral than your average Brit? -

Do you care about calling the Watchtower a false prophet?
by drew sagan inover and over again the argument is made that jehovah's witnesses and/or the watchtower society are a false prophet.
arguments for the 'false prophet' label come as follows: .
the watchtower has predicted the end of the world on certain dates and such things have never transpired.
-
Zico
I find their prediction of events more revealing than their dates. Example, in WW2 Rutherford predicted Armageddon would come after Germany won the war. This isn't the only event they've predicted wrong. (You pointed out their King of the North failures) Despite a 100% failure rate in predicting events that will cause Armageddon in the past, Jehovah's Witnesses still believe without question the Society when they say Armageddon will be caused by the UN banning religion.

Well, I'm nauseated now. Gag inducing dramatizations at my DC
by Lady Zombie induring the hour long symposium: empowered by holy spirit.
under the part "to fight temptation," a little dramatization of a young married man doing some work on his laptop.
he is tapping away when he suddenly slams his laptop shut.

"Call me naive but I have a new computer (7 months) and haven't had porn popup once. I have strong blockers on my computer. Is it really that hard to block porn. How much of an accident can it be?"
Blondie,
I have always wondered about this pop-up porn thing the Society constantly go on about. Porn never pops up on my PC. I'm convinced it's a myth. -

Martin Luther Sounds like He's talking about the WTBTS in the 1500's!
by AuntBee inusually i'm just a lurker.
i'm a chrirstian concerned for a jw teen, and wanting to understand what he's going through, and where he's coming from i don't usually post, but this morning i came upon this while reading from the sermons of martin luther , volume 1. he's speaking about luke 21:28.. "the godless fanatical preachers are to be censured who in their sermons deprive people of these words of christ and faith in them, who desire to make people devout by terrifying them and who teach them to prepare for the last day by relying upon their good works as satisfaction for their sins.
here despair, fear and terror must remain and grow and with it hatred, aversion and abhorrence for the coming of the lord, and enmity against god be established in the heart; for they picture christ as nothing but a stern judge whose heart must be appeased by works, and they never present him as the redeemer, as he calls and offers himself, of whom we are to expect that out of pure grace he will redeem us from sin and evil.. such is always the result where the gospel is not rightly proclaimed.
