  the problem with atheism(this is an edited transcript of a talk given at the atheist alliance conference in washington d.c. on september 28th, 2007).

  to begin, id like to take a moment to acknowledge just how strange it is that a meeting like this is even necessary.

  the year is 2007, and we have all taken time out of our busy lives, and many of us have traveled considerable distance, so that we can strategize about how best to live in a world in which most people believe in an imaginary god.

  I think that “atheist” is a term that we do not need, in the same way that we don’t need a word for someone who rejects astrology. We simply do not call people “non-astrologers.”

  I disagree completely.

  He is correct that it would be asinine to call ourselves non-astrologers or a-unicornists, but ONLY because the vast majority of people don't believe in astrology or unicorns.

  IF we lived in a world that was preponderantly astrologers, then non-astrologers would be a very useful qualifier.

  We should not call ourselves anything. We should go under the radar—for the rest of our lives. And while there, we should be decent, responsible people who destroy bad ideas wherever we find them.

  That's what we've been doing for the past 4000+ years, it doesn't work.

  We should continue to use the term 'atheist' until it no longer holds meaning, but currently it does.

  I look forward to the day when nobody believes in god, except for a tiny minority, and they will debate among themselves whether they want to use the term 'theist' or 'believer' or just go under the radar—for the rest of their lives.

  The Earthly Hope for the thief on the cross?

  since jesus died first and the curtain in the temple was torn in two did the thief share in the earthly or the heavenly hope?.

  so the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man and of the other one who had been crucified with him.

  when they came to jesus, they did not break his legs since they saw that he was already dead.

  the Society has actually printed that no translation of the bible can be made without doctrinal beliefs influencing the translation.

  ...

  That's just stupid. You can translate Star Trek to ANY language you want, but you don't have to believe it, or let your own opinions about Klingon philosophy guide you... They speak, and you translate what they say.

  If it's written, you translate what is written, you don't interject or correct what you are translating...

  Is using 10% of our brain just a myth?

  the society has said many times that we only use 10% of our brains.

  they use this assertion to claim that this is part of man's imperfection.. this article attempts to refute that claim.. .

  Neuroscientists say that during our present life span, we use just a small part of our potential brain power, only about 1/10,000, or 1/100 of 1 percent, according to one estimate. Think about it. Is it reasonable that we would be given a brain with such miraculous possibilities if it was never to be used fully? Is it not reasonable that humans, with the capacity for endless learning, were actually designed to live forever?

  If that is true, why do we grow old? What went wrong? Why, after some 70 or 80 years, do we die, even though our bodies evidently were designed to last forever?

  So we use less than 0.001% of our brain in our lifetime...

  It must be true because 'Neuroscientists' say so...

  Hot bathwater, and a cold drink. I'd choose Pepsi of course, with a caffeine tablet disolved in it, but you'll probably want something alcoholic. Either way, make sure you bring a long straw so you don't have to worry too much with the drink.

  No bubbles, they get annoying when you are trying to relax. And play soft music in the background. NO SCENTED CANDLES, that'll make it hard to breath... it's hard enough to breath when your body is underwater, without fouling up the air.

  The ideal would be too place a COLD wet washcloth over your eyes and forehead, an icepack might even be better, set the drink on the side of the tub, and keep the straw in your mouth at all times. Breath through your nose, drink through your mouth, and listen to the music with your ears underwater.

  Okay...

  Here's a quick look at the life of Lot: When his father died Lot moved in with his uncle Abraham. They traveled a lot, and eventually got pretty wealthy, soon Lot and Abraham started to fight over their stuff. So they seperated. Naturally since Lot was younger and healthier, he decided to take the BEST land in Sodom, and leave his tattered old uncle to deal with the inferior land somewhere else.
  But Sodom was full of nasty people, or at least people that God didn't like, and God decided to kill them.
  So, either because he was a really swell guy, or because his uncle is chums with god (take your pick) Yahweh decided to spare Lot and his family.
  After housing two hobos who turned out to be angels with an important message, Lot completely failed to save ANYONE other than his immediate family, discounting his wife. =
  They went to the mountains where he had sex with BOTH his virgin daughters, got them BOTH pregnent, and thus became the father of TWO of Israel's arch-enemies, Amon and Moab. But it's okay, because he was stone drunk at the time.

  Lot was later given an honorable mention in Second Peter, as a righteous man. (2 Peter 2:7-8)

  A child who views Lot as a rolemodel, may very well grow up to be an alchoholic, who solves his family problems by simply taking what he can and seperating from his family, and who seems to believe that: "But I was drunk when I did it." is a good excuse for ANYTHING.
  Also don't be surprised if his grandchildren have a few genetic deformities...
