Won’t Comment on Rumors of Possible Move of Headquarters Out of Brooklyn Heights

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS — Reports of an additional acquisition of property near its Wallkill, N.Y., printing plant complex have been confirmed by the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society.

However, rumors that the religious group, also known as the Jehovah’s Witnesses, will move its world headquarters from Brooklyn Heights to that location were not confirmed.

“It’s so early in the process, it’s not possible to say,” said spokesperson Richard Devine, who is in charge of real property for the organization.

David Semonian, in the public information office, confirmed the new acquisition for the Eagle, saying in an e-mail, “I can verify that we have acquired additional property outside of New York City in New York State, in the Town of Warwick in Orange County. This is in addition to property recently acquired by the Witnesses in the Town of Ramapo, in Rockland County.”

As reported in the Eagle in March, the Ramapo property is a 248-acre site (291 acres with a perpetual conservation space) where the Watchtower plans an administrative complex with about 850 volunteer workers onsite.

“It will be a live-in and work complex similar to what we have in Brooklyn Heights so there will be both residential and office space. Everyone who is assigned there will live there,” Devine said at the time.

The organization’s plan submitted to the town of Ramapo has not yet received its final approvals, requiring zoning change and environmental reviews, as well as a religious-use tax exemption.

“It’s moving along. But it tends to be a long process,” said Devine.

Plans for the new acquisition in Warwick are similar.

“We have applied to the town for an office and residential complex,” he said. It will also have to go through a similar review process.

He describes the property as a 253-acre site with structures originally built 50 years ago for the International Nickel Co. (now known as INCO) for its research and development division. The company closed that division in 1983.

King’s College owned the property for awhile in the 1980s and had received approvals for its plan to develop a 1,600-student campus there. But the college dropped those plans and the property had changed hands several times since then, according to Devine.

“We actually bought it from Touro College,” Devine said.

According to Semonian’s statement, the Watchtower’s primary objective in acquiring the two properties is to locate complexes in closer proximity to its Shawangunk/Patterson printing plant complex in Wallkill. Devine said the sites are only one and a half miles apart.

Even if all approvals fall into place in Ramapo and Warwick, there’s still a matter of the current state of the real estate market.

“We have eight smaller buildings [in Brooklyn Heights] we have yet to sell,” Devine said. “Because of the market we are not actively promoting their sale. We’ve even started using the Bossert [Hotel] again on a limited basis.”

As previously reported in the Eagle, the Bossert was going to be acquired by Robert Levine, president and CEO of RAL Companies & Affiliates, and developer of the former Watchtower shipping complex at 360 Furman, but he backed out of the deal.

The other buildings still on the market include 165, 161 and 183 Columbia Heights, 105 Willow St. and 34 Orange St., all residential buildings that are now vacant except for some tenants that pre-existed Watchtower ownership.

As regularly chronicled in this newspaper, the religious organization has been reorganizing and consolidating a number of its operations in Brooklyn Heights and transferring some to Walkill since 2004, when the printing and shipping operations were moved.

“Those adjustments resulted in a decrease in our Brooklyn staff, reducing our need for residential space,” Semonian said at the time.

Like the 12-story, 960,000-square-foot former shipping complex on Furman, the world headquarters and administrative offices at 25 and 30 Columbia Heights are also massive buildings — they are 13 and 10 stories, respectively, and 304,650 and 402,300 square feet.

As previously reported, there are currently about 1,500 volunteer workers at the Brooklyn Heights headquarters. If the Ramapo plan for 850 volunteers goes forward and the Warwick plan, too, with its unknown quantity, it seems obvious there would no longer be a need for offices in Brooklyn Heights.

NORTH VERSAILLES, Pa. -- Burglars posing as a religious group may be the scheme behind a break-in at a North Versailles home.

Neighbors on Upper Hackman Road said they saw people who appeared to be Jehovah's Witnesses knocking on doors.

Then, two men dressed in suits showed up at one of the houses while no one was home. Police said 52- and 32-inch televisions were taken from that house, which belongs to Wendy Nowading.

"It's rather creepy," Nowading told Channel 4 Action News.

"The males were here," North Versailles Police Chief James Comunale said. "They were all dressed in better clothes, so one would assume they were all together. We know the males were at this house."

Police want to question nearby places of worship to see if they can help with the investigation.

"We would like to talk to whichever kingdom hall they came from," Comunale said. "I know there's a McKeesport branch and a Braddock branch."

Police said this incident came after a series of burglaries last month, but they do not believe there's any connection.

NORTH VERSAILLES, Pa. -- Police in North Versailles are exploring all possible connections to burglaries that have been happening recently.

That includes trying to locate a group of Jehovah's Witness members who were in the area at the time of a burglary reported on Tuesday at a home along Upper Heckman Road. Investigators said women were seen with Jehovah's Witness flyers along with two well dressed black men with silver car.

Apparently, no one saw them all together, but police said they are investigating the lead anyway.

Chief James Comunale said police still have not found the group, but said they'll head to Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses to interview people.

"We're unsure if this group was together," Comunale said. "We just don't know who did the burglary. We're investigating the people who were seen."

Homeowner Wendy Nowading said she feels violated, saying the robbers stole Nike socks, her grandmother's antique ring and a large flat-screen television.

“I suspect they slid the screen over, opened the window and slid themselves in,” said Nowading. “Why did they have to take my stuff?”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police.

ok, im putting my neck on the line here but ive always believed that children should be raised to make their own choice, if to serve jah or not.. i wasnt ever forced to believe in anything, any religion etc, although my background is very complicated.. anyway, hubby and i have always thought that how can a child decide if they dont know what other things are, ie birthday partys, halloween etc.

so, our children are allowed to choose if to go places etc.

last year our little boy said he didnt want to go to a halloween party, this year he said he might.

Inconsistent parenting is wrong, period.

Raising children in the Watchtower cult, yet allowing them to go ahead and celebrate pagan, worldly holidays — ESPECIALLY demonic Halloween — sets them up for major guilt trips before Jehovah.

Some might even call it emotional child abuse.

"This world is passing away and so is it's desire." And what about "Quit touching the unclean thing?" Those scriptures were inculcated into us as mere babes! We were instructed to "write them on our heart."

How can you drag your children back to the Kingdom Hall after allowing them to participate in THE MOST Satanic of holidays?

From where I stand, it's not just the height of hypocrisy, but utter cruelty to mess with their little heads and hearts like that.

Hey there, Georgiegirl,

A critical concern is that you're using trial software. See if it will even let you print? Usually it will let you create content for screen use but not output actual files.

Or it will, with a dreadful watermark. Useful for learning but not for real-time work, especially under a weekend deadline!

In the meantime, please do check out InDesign's Long document features section on the Adobe website.

Creating book files

I would set up an InDesign template with master pages (with headers and footers) and style sheets. I'd use the template to create each chapter as a unique document, then compile them into an InDesign "book file." From there you can generate the TOC by selecting which styles you want tagged for inclusion. This allows you to maintain a high level of control over local pagination as well as overall book assembly.

There are a host of reasons why I would not choose MS Word for this particular project the way you've described it so far... Suffice it to say I've worked as a graphic designer and production manager in print publishing for the last 20 years (including textbooks and medical/technical user manuals), and prior to that as an executive assistant who's all too familiar with MS typing software masquerading as a professional publishing toolbox.
