Quite an active debate going on here , including a poster called Kizzie from North Wales who claims to know the man.

by Rabbit informer teacher jailed for trying to abduct girl in holywellmar 12 2009 by our correspondent, western mail.
a former teacher, businessman and senior jehovahs witness who tried to abduct a five-year-old was yesterday jailed for six years.. robert edward bill, 54, was told by a judge that he was still in denial about his predatory interest in young children despite a series of convictions.. he has been found guilty at separate trials of the attempted abduction of the girl in holywell two years ago, of indecently assaulting a seven-year-old 10 years ago, and of possessing 730 pornographic images of children.. prosecuting at caernarfon crown court, simon medland described how the girl had been returning home from a playground when bill, for malign purposes, drew up in his car and asked: have you seen a cat?.
by chance the girls uncle arrived at the scene at that moment and her mother, who had been watching from a window, ran to her.. mr medland said bill of the roe, st asaph, denbighshire, had been driving slowly around areas where he was likely to come into contact with children that same day.

Information is a bit sketchy about this loathsome man. He has been a JW for 26 years ( according to his friends reunited profile) but not showing on the list of current elders , so if he was an elder , he was presumably deleted some time ago. The first case collapsed after the jury failed to reach a verdict.
The JW link isn't mentioned in other reports - anecdotally , I think that JWs are advised not to mention nowadays their specific religion , but rather that a member of "their church" abused them , so stopping "Jehovah's name being brought into reproach."

Extreme Makeover Home Edition featuring a JW
by startingover inthe story about this was posted here earlier when it all started in fresno, ca.
the community rallied behind this jw family, and one church even gathered enough donations from it's members that they paid off her $25,000 mortgage.. this was in the paper this morning.
she and her family were at the church that donated the money for her mortgage to watch the show.

Riojas and her children watched the TV show with about 400 volunteers and others at The Bridge Evangelical Free Church, which in January had donated $25,000 to help pay off Riojas' existing mortgage.
Hmmm - do the church members realise that they are regarded as "workers of lawlessness" according to last Sundays Watchtower?

Private Watchtower Some two billion people claim to be Christian today, but their actions reveal them to be "workers of lawlessness."
Public Watchtower (from watchtower.org) Do they believe that they are the only ones who will be saved?
No. Millions that have lived in centuries past and who were not Jehovah's Witnesses will come back in a resurrection and have an opportunity for life. Many now living may yet take a stand for truth and righteousness before the "great tribulation," and they will gain salvation. Moreover, Jesus said that we should not be judging one another. We look at the outward appearance; God looks at the heart. He sees accurately and judges mercifully. He has committed judgment into Jesus' hands, not ours.

Are German JWs about to get hit with a tax bill?
by Mickey mouse inplease read the text at this link.. .
religion and state are separate, although historically a special partnership exists between the state and those religious communities that have the status of a "corporation under public law.
" if they fulfill certain requirements, including assurance of permanence and size of the organization, and do not demonstrate disloyalty to the state, religious organizations may request "public law corporation" (plc) status, which, among other things, entitles them to levy taxes on their members, which the state then collects as part of the overall taxes.

In broader terms , I am convinced that sooner or later the incredibly generous system of tax reliefs for charities that exists in many countries will have to be pegged back. In the UK , direct tax reliefs have grown to over 3 billion GBP http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/stats/charities/table10-2.pdf
The system was never designed for such a huge transfer of funds from the taxpayer to often undeserving and even fraudulent organisations. The exploiting of the system by violent animal rights groups and extremist Islamic groups , among others , has led to many question why the taxpayer should fund these groups. While this may have been acceptable during boom times , I am sure that governments worldwide must be examining whether this system is viable when government deficits are rocketing.

Franz mentions it in one of his books , when he wrote a WT article moderating the WTS stance (before elders were unsure whether they were allowed to help mothers with their buggies up stairs and sisters used to drive past DF people in the pouring rain etc). ISOCF mentions Aug 1 1974 WT. It was hardened up again after he left. Don't know what the current situation is.

Jehovhah's Witnesses Once Again America's Fastest Growing Church
by David2002 inaccording to the 2009 edition of the yeabook of american and canadian churches, jehovah's christian witnesses are once again the fastest group in the united states.
meanwhile the roman cathollic church and the southern baptist convention lost thousands of members.
while the growht rate of the witnesses was 2.12%, based mainly on those that actively preach the good news, it was the highest growth percentage when compared to other groups.

I reckon that JWs will almost indefinitely grow at a trend growth of 2% - 3% per year barring a major schism , scandal or 1925/75 style fiasco. Unlikely most other religions , JWs do have a very active evangelizing program – as we know , the whole religion is based around the preaching work & endeavoring to make converts. Although many are quite apathetic in the ministry , we all know of numerous gung-ho pioneers and incredibly enthusiastic JWs.
A crude comparison is with the Scientologists who are growing rapidly , due to their outreach programs.
There will always be “churn” at the margins , perhaps more than most religions , but that is the nature of the JW business model. We all know that when a JW becomes established , especially when family are also JWs , then the hurdles to exiting are made very difficult and retention is very high.
Then there is always 3 rd World growth as well to offset any decline (especially in Europe which is in negative growth territory for JWs). In certain African countries , they cannot build KHs quickly enough. I know one missionary who is overcome with the number of “interested ones” – he literally cannot cope.
The rapidly receding 1914 is the main problem for the JWs , but it is increasingly not being mentioned in the publications , replaced with a vaguer time frame.

BBC programme on AMISH and SHUNNING
by wobble inthe bbc in the u.k broadcast a programme on the 18th of feb. on bbc2 called "trouble in amish paradise" it is about an amish family who start to realise that all the rule following is keeping them from faith in jesus, and how the amish bishops react to independant bible study etc.. the parallels of attitude "we are ex-communicating you for ignoring our rules, not for studying the bible" are quite stunning.. the family that is followed during the prog.
are really lovely people,.
and when it comes down to just being christian, even though the family is df'd, the amish come up trumps!

Saw this program. Lots of parallels with JW , though some of the Amish "beyond what is written" restrictions (bikes not OK , razorblades OK , phone in the house not OK , cordless phone OK as long as powered with 12V battery) makes the JW restrictions look quite sensible.

South Africa. Court saves JW girl's life
by jakes init seems as if the courts in south africa are taking a hard line stance on children of jehovahs witnesses and blood transfusions.
court saves jehovah's witness girl's life20 february 2009, 06:13. by kanina foss.
a 12-year-old jehovah's witness girl has received a life-saving blood transfusion that she did not want after a johannesburg high court order gave doctors the go-ahead.. .

What kind of parents would stop a 12 year old (or 4 day old baby) from having a transfusion? Ridiculous.
Here , the HLC advises a "don't ask , don't tell" policy to prevent the inevitable court action. JWs are told to sign disclosures asking that any kind of treatment may be used and the doctor assures them that they will do their level best not to use blood , but can't guarantee it. Must be a different system in South Africa (or maybe the HLC are more stringent in applying Brooklyn's directions)
