I'm sure Mr. Brown knows to the minute how many hours JW's spent "Preaching and Teaching the Good News" (tm) in 2001. So why does he resort to vague wordplay when the pedophile issue comes up? Oh, I forgot, "ability to confuse media and others with vague wordplay" was the first requirement listed in the WT spokesperson employment ad!

Major holes in J.R. Brown's Panorama response
by comment in1) brown states: "you have been told that here in the united states we have compiled a list of 23,720 names of child abusers.
that is false.
first of all, the total number of names in our records is considerably lower.

Something Different From Me
by Farkel innote: all single apostrophes have been deleted by simon's software from this word document i just pasted here.. .
one of the problems with any discussion board is that it doesnt allow us much of an opportunity to show other dimensions of ourselves.
my great passion is and has always been serious music.

The Apassionata Sonata (Opus 57) by Ludwig Beethoven (very fast and very difficult)
My mom used to play this one a lot. She was never a great piano player, but she played with feeling, which counts more than anything else. I look forward to hearing your rendition.
This is an aside, but one of the things that bothered me as a dub was that I really enjoyed music, and it seemed to me that music produced by persons living in a righteous perfect paradise would be sterile and meaninglessness. The most beautiful songs are the saddest ones (just listen to some Jewish folk music, some of the saddest and most beautiful music you'll hear). Just a little amateur philosophy for ya.

New book pisses active Witnesses off!
by Intuit39 inmy sister just called me at work to let me know that her husband (until recently, unsympathetic to her doubts) is thoroughly confused and pissed off by the new 'worship' book!.
he has been comparing it with the 'united' book, has noted the obvious differences (3 missing chapters), and has begun examining it word for word...now he is raving looney about it.. to top it off, they were at bethel within the last few days, somehow ended up in brother larson's personal office, and were astonished to find a model spanish galleon replete with huge crosses, and a huge portrait of good ol' max towering over the watchtower itself.
she said her husband thought it looked like a propaganda poster for 'big brother'..... finally!

20 years from now, when the blood issue will have long since been designated a conscience matter, it will be swept under the rug and the decades long ban will be considered to be of little importance to dubs at that time. Then they'll come out with another "history" book such as the Proclaimers book that will gloss over the issue and make it seem as though they never really made a big deal of it. And old-timers who were affected by the issue will be counseled along the lines of -
"Can any of us rightly be upset with Jehovah because we can now accept in good conscience something that was previously unacceptable to us? Certainly this would not be the case..."

Their narcissistic way of applying all Bible prophecy to themselves was always tough to swallow. I usually either skipped those meetings or spaced-out during the coverage of the material. I attended dozens of KH meetings where I barely heard a word that was said.
Turning in field service time was a clincher for me. The more I thought about that, the more bizarre it became to me.

Sign of the Last Days THEN!
by JanH inthe last days in the 14th century
all through recorded history there have been people who have pointed to the calamities, horrors and disasters in the world, and preached that this signified an imminent end of the world.
this isnt even unique to christianity, which started off with strong millennial expectations in the 1st century, and for the most part retains the same expectations almost 2000 years later.

So sorry, you can sit in a corner and close your eyes and put your hands over your ears if you want, but some of us advanced Biblical chronologists are having a field day!
I take my apology back. You are high on yourself!

The meeting my wife and I had with her elder.
by FRUSR8TD inhello all.... for those who don't know..my wife and i have been married for almost 7 years, she had left the wt before we met.
i have never been a jw.
after 9/11 my mother in law used fear to "scare" her back into the (b)org.. ok, now 10 months later our marriage is in serious trouble.

FRUSR8TD:
I feel your pain. I am so sorry to hear about your situation with your wife.
Cult involvement works much along the same lines as an abusive relationship. When Tina was with Ike, you could have tried to reason all day long with her to try to convince her that he was bad news, but she had to figure it out for herself. As long as they are under the spell of the leadership, there just isn't a whole lot you can say.
Although I haven't read it, "Combatting Cult Mind Control" I hear is a very good book that doesn't mention JW's directly. Maybe it would open her eyes to the situation she's in, if she'd be willing to read it.

I've been wanting to find a testimony of an ex-jw whose JW conversion story had been the subject of an article in the Crotchtower or Asleep! mag - and I found one! Surf on over to www.exjws.net and click on "Asking for a Sign". A great experience! Here's a memorable quote from his disassociation letter:
Its not fair to judge the integrity of a servant of God, base on his answers about some norms imposed by a collective, as if these came from God.
beautiful!
Does anybody else have a link to a story of one who left the troof whose story had been in one of the mags?

Eric,
I'm only recently out of the Watchtower, so I guess a lot of the doom 'n gloom is still hanging around. Disease, overpopulation, economic issues, water shortages, poverty, terrorists, It all scares the shit out of me. I felt so immune to it all when I was in the WT. It was a false security, but it was security nonetheless! Sometimes it seems to me that humanity is on the verge of a complete chaotic breakdown. I'm a bit of a drama queen, you might say.
Larsguy, my comment towards you was uncalled for. I apologize.

JESUS NOT THE MEDIATOR?
by Mary inguess i hadn't been paying "close attention" at the meetings a few years ago......apparently, jesus is not the mediator between god and men like the bible says, he's only the mediator between the 144,000 and jehovah - i guess the rest of us can go straight to hell in a handbasket...... .
how long has this bizarre theory been around??!!
i was absolutely stunned to hear this one, as i had never heard it before.

And persons experiencing depression don't always notice things, they are too busy mentally survivng from day to day.
Well put. The depressed ones in the org (and there are many) don't have the mental energy to entertain the idea that maybe their guilt-inducing, burdensome religion is the source of their probs. I coasted along for years that way.
