ROME (Feb. 23) - If you are inquisitive about the Inquisition, a rare public glimpse of centuries-old Vatican documents will leave you wanting more. There are no heresy trial transcripts or descriptions of torture methods at a show on view in Rome and through March 16. Still, enough curiosities on display allow fascinating insights into how the Vatican once systematically tried to gain control over many aspects of life that had nothing to do with faith. For centuries, the archives of what was once known as the Holy Office were secret. Then, in 1998, they were opened to scholars.
The intriguing show, at Rome’s Central Risorgimento Museum, is the first time the public can study a sampling of what those archives preserve. There is the 1611 Holy Office order instructing Inquisitors how to carry out their job and how to conduct themselves in their time off the job. A calendar from 1708 gives the day-byday schedule of religious orders whose members took turns helping in Rome’s hospitals, starting with Holy Spirit hospital, which still serves the city today. A 1703 list of rules spells out a crackdown on Huguenots and heretics and those sheltering them. Huguenots were persecuted French Protestants. A 1599 edict targets game hunters, bird hunters and fishermen who were poaching at a Vatican estate south of Rome. The edicts and orders were printed on what turned out to be remarkably durable material made out of recycled rags at a Vatican printing establishment. The Holy Office “wanted total control,” said Monsignor Alejandro Cifres, one of the show’s curators and on the staff of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, previously known as the Holy Office. The Church in past centuries had its hand in everything, ranging from “culture to literature to economics, even architecture,” Cifres said. The Holy Office relied on reports from Dominicans, Franciscans and lay people, he said, and the Church had a “network” of monitors.
Napoleon’s forces carted off bundles of documents from the Holy Office. After his fall in the early 1800s, the French government wanted to return the material but the cost of transport was too high, Cifres said, and the order went out from Rome to burn many of the files. But documents from famous trials such as that of Galileo were saved, Cifres said, and much of the other material had been duplicated and held in local churches or institutions. Galileo, the Italian astronomer, had been condemned by the Church for supporting Nicholas Copernicus’ discovery that the Earth revolved around the Sun, and not vice versa as the Vatican then held. Pope John Paul II in 1992 declared the 17thcentury denunciation of Galileo in error. On display is the first tome, from the early 1600s, of banned books. The last index was published in 1930 and reprinted in 1948. Pope Paul VI abolished the index in the mid-1960s. Even scholars who have consulted some of the material in the archives were surprised at some of the exhibits. Pencil and watercolor drawings for the design of a crucifix for San Damiano Church in Assisi grabbed the attention of Andrea Del Col, a history professor at the University of Trieste. The Holy Office’s “corrected” version of the sketch liminated graphic spurts of blood pouring out of Jesus’ knees in the original design.

Scientists Suspect Link Between Pesticides and Type 2 Diabetes
Submitted by kat on January 28, 2008 - 11:48am.
Why did we ever think that a pesticide that poisons bugs wouldn’t be harmful to humans, too? A just-published study from British medical journal the Lancet finds that people whose blood levels contain high levels of a category of pesticides known as POPs (persistent organic pollutants) are at greater risk of developing insulin resistance, which can lead to type 2 diabetes. More research is needed, according to Dr. Oliver Jones, one of the study’s authors:
“Of course correlation does not automatically imply causation. But if there is indeed a link, the health implications could be tremendous. At present there is very limited information. Research into adult onset diabetes currently focuses on genetics and obesity; there has been almost no consideration for the possible influence of environmental factors such as pollution.”
The researchers found that thin people with higher concentrations of POPs in their blood were more likely to get diabetes than overweight people whose POP levels were low. This is huge (as it were); obesity has largely been blamed for the dramatic rise in adult-onset diabetes, which we’ve renamed type 2 diabetes now that it’s showing up in kids, too. If environmental pollution turns out to be a factor, the pesticide industry had better brace itself for a new level of scrutiny.
One of the POPs turning up in our blood is DDT, banned in the seventies. Government authorities continued to allow DDT to be widely used as an agricultural pesticide for decades after evidence that farmers regularly exposed to it suffered all kinds of illnesses, including a high rate of asthma. Unfortunately, POPs linger so long in our environment that DDT and other compounds in this category still find their way into our food chain, and, therefore, our bodies, where they “can persist in body fat for very long periods of time following exposure,” according to Science Daily.
Rachel Carson warned us about DDT back in 1962 in Silent Spring, her ground-breaking (or, rather, earth-saving) exposé on DDT’s destruction of wildlife and potential harm to humans. Carson’s book is largely credited with launching the environmental movement, but sometimes it seems as though we’re just treading water—much of it tainted with PCB’s or agricultural runoff or plastic bags and other man-made debris.
Here we are, forty-five years later, still battling with the residues of these persistent poisons. Makes you wonder about all the chemicals our industries use so freely in the production of our gotta-have consumer goods, including our foods. We need to understand two things, here: (1) a corporation’s primary responsibility is to the health of its bottom line, not the health of the people who buy its products; (2) the government agencies that are supposed to protect American consumers have a long history of favoring business interests over our health and safety.
Our standards are far less stringent than the European Union’s when it comes to the use of many chemicals in consumer goods. Even China—China!—has higher standards for some products than we do, which is why they make a grade of formaldehyde-laced plywood for Home Depot that’s too toxic for their own market.
Organic food sales have skyrocketed in the US in part because so many of us are willing to pay more for produce that’s pesticide-free. Sadly, those who can’t afford to pay more may be paying a price in other ways. Our out-of-whack eco-system raises a simple question: Who you callin’ “pest?”

Women have strengths that amaze men.
They bear hardships and they carry burdens,
but they hold happiness, love and joy.
They smile when they want to scream.
They sing when they want to cry.
They cry when they are happy and
laugh when they are nervous.
They fight for what they believe in.
They stand up to injustice.
They don't take "no" for an answer
when they believe there is a better solution.
They go without so their family can have.
They go to the doctor with a frightened friend.
They love unconditionally.
They cry when their children excel
and cheer when their friends get awards.
They are happy when they hear about a birth or a wedding.
Their hearts break when a friend dies.
They grieve at the loss of a family member,
yet they are strong when they think there is no strength left.
They know that a hug and a kiss can heal a broken heart.
Women come in all shapes, sizes and colors.
They'll drive, fly, walk, run or e-mail you
to show how much they care about you.
The heart of a woman is what makes the world keep turning.
They bring joy, hope and love.
They have the compassion and ideas.
They give moral support to their family and friends.
Women have vital things to say and everything to give.
HOWEVER, IF THERE IS ONE FLAW IN WOMEN,
IT IS THAT THEY FORGET THEIR OWN WORTH. -

WASHINGTON (Feb. 11) - Conspiracy theorists take note: The myths surrounding one of America's oldest and most enduring national symbols are about to be debunked ... if you believe the government, that is.
Great Seal: Fact and Fiction
Myth: The design signifies the U.S. is run by Freemasons or some sort of cult.
Fact: The seal uses several Masonic symbols, including the unfinished pyramid, but the symbols aren't exclusive to the Freemasons.
Myth: Repeated references to the number 13 -- including the steps in the pyramid -- represent the power of 13 American families.
Fact: Thirteen is used as a reference to the nation's original 13 colonies.
Myth: The Seal draws on Satanism or other rituals to promote a world run by a single government.
Fact: The words "Annuit Coeptis" ("Providence favors") and the eye of providence over the pyramid refer to twists of fate that helped bring about the birth of the United States.

The Seal's Creation and Meaning
(PDF format)
The keepers of the Great Seal of the United States, the familiar emblem on the back of the $1 bill, want you to know what it is not. It is not a sign that Freemasons run the country, it has nothing to do with the occult, and it does not contain clues to a fabulous hidden treasure.
It is rather the nation's stamp of authority, sovereignty and power, gracing our cash and embossing the most important of documents from its home at the State Department, which has held it since the days of Thomas Jefferson, the first secretary of state.
Not that the Seal's symbols - the all-seeing eye, the unfinished pyramid, the Latin phrases, the bald eagle clutching an olive branch and arrows and the number 13 - aren't powerful.

The Spread of Muslims in Europe
by serotonin_wraith inthe spread of muslims in europe.
it seems inevitable that a hundred or two hundred years from now, the majority of people in europe will be muslim.
this is based on the number of children they are having compared to non muslims, and the presumption that they will be told from a very early age they are muslim too, and taught to believe the same things as their parents.

Adoption of parts of Sharia law "unavoidable" in Britain.
PM praises archbishop's integrity
Gordon Brown has praised the Archbishop of Canterbury's "great integrity" after criticism of his remarks on Sharia law.
The prime minister's spokesman said Dr Rowan Williams had clarified his comments that implied adopting aspects of Sharia in the UK was "unavoidable".
But Dr Williams faces pressure from some Church of England traditionalists who want him to apologise.
The archbishop is expected to address clergy on the subject at the general synod later. The prime minister's spokesman said Mr Brown understood "the difficulties" the archbishop was facing and paid tribute to Dr Williams's "dedication to public and community service". Earlier the Times reported that Mr Brown had telephoned the archbishop and encouraged him to clarify his remarks where he felt they may have been misinterpreted. Mr Brown's spokesman would not say if the two men had spoken over the weekend, but described their relationship as "close", and said Mr Brown had "been kept informed on this debate throughout".
Mr Brown believed religious law should be subservient to UK law, he added. He's left Christians in other countries that are trying to sound cautionary notes about the spread of Sharia law in an extremely difficult position. If the archbishop fails to apologise, 150 traditionalist members of the synod are believed to be prepared to sign an open letter distancing themselves from his suggestions. BBC religious correspondent Robert Pigott said traditionalists, who believe Dr Williams should be fighting to preserve the Christian, biblical basis for the law, had "declared war" over the issue. Dr Chris Sugden, canon and executive secretary of the evangelical organisation Anglican Mainstream, is one of those calling for an apology from the archbishop.
"Well we're saying that he's made a mistake - that he has caused great difficulties for our colleagues especially in Nigeria, especially in other countries where there's significant Muslim pressure for Sharia to come in," he told BBC Radio 4's The World at One. He added: "We hope that he will have the integrity to say 'I made a mistake in what I said', and 'I'm sorry to those for whom it has caused great distress'."
The Reverend Rod Thomas, chairman of Reform, a group representing traditionalists, also told the BBC's One O'Clock News the archbishop's remarks had inflicted huge damage to Christians both at home and abroad. "He has let down the Church and in particular I think he's left Christians in other countries that are trying to sound cautionary notes about the spread of Sharia law in an extremely difficult position." HAVE YOUR SAY No religion what so ever should dictate or influence laws or policy in Britain. Ever. Daniel Burnett, Newcastle Dr Williams sparked a major row after saying, in a BBC Radio 4 interview last week, that the adoption of parts of Sharia law was "unavoidable" in Britain. -

We don't celebrate holidays because ........
by RubaDub ini just can't stomach the time wasted in meetings and in the literature about the jw stand on holidays.. we try to explain why we don't celebrate christmas, mothers day, halloween, thanksgiving day, etc, etc, etc.. yet in reality, other than the memorial and anniversaries, we don't celebrate anything, regardless of the origins of the holiday.
if a new holiday was created encouraging people to be nice to each other, we still wouldn't celebrate it ... it would be worldly!!!.
all the time and energy put into determining the origins of certains days is just a waste of time.
