All I've seen are typed copies of Moyle's letters. It'd be interesting to see scans of the originals.

The Curious Case of Olin R. Moyle
by RR inolin r. moyle was the society's attorney from about 1930 to 1939. he authored several of the society's legal publications.
he later became increasingly disenchanted with the moral tone of bethel, especially the harsh and obscene language judge rutherford used (often in print) and what he considered to be excessive drinking there.
when moyle could no longer tolerate the situation, he wrote a letter to rutherford with his complaints, rutherford responded by promptly expelling him and his wife from bethel.

Max Hatton's 1960s study into the WTS chronology
by Doug Mason inin the early 1960s, a jehovah's witness named max hatton was living and working in albany, a town on the southern coast of western australia.
when he was challenged by sda geoff rogerson, who lived in the nearby township of denmark, about the watchtower society's neo-babylonian chronology, max investigated geoff's claims.. after four years of intensive research, max resigned his position as a "servant in the organisation".. max documented the result of his research, and his 77-page study is remarkable and deserves to be widely known.
it is quite likely that the copies max and i have are two of very few copies that now exist.

Thanks, Doug, for sharing this file with us! Its author evidently has done some great research. Even though it's a bit dated, its argumentation today is still forceful!

Seems like I read that the 1941 Convention adopted a resolution condeming Moyle. Has anyone else heard that? Is there a copy or recording of the resolution?

Back in the 70s, Mexican restaurants in New York were extremely rare. I remember going to Bohack's grocery store and buying a frozen TV dinner featuring enchiladas and cooking it in a toaster oven (which I think were technically illegal to have) to satisfy an urging for Southwest cuisine. It was lousy, of course, but brought back memories. It definitely was not the real enchilada!

Fascati's Pizza on Henry St.
Here's a review online:

It was just a few blocks from Bethel and a favorite of most everyone. I still remember running into Audrey Knorr as she was picking up a pizza to take home one Sunday night for her and Nathan.
If I ever make it back to visit Brooklyn Heights again this is one stop I intend to make.

Thank you, Atlantis, for these files! As you noted, John Paton had a very strong influence over the early issues of Zion's Watch Tower until his break with Russell in 1881. The first edition of Day Dawn (1880) was mentioned several times in the Watch Tower and was the first book circulated by Russell and his group after the magazine started. The famous "Wanted 1,000 Preachers" article in the April, 1881 Watch Tower mentions the first edition of Day Dawn (along with the Watch Tower magazine and some tracts) as the message being circulated. Russell wrote:
To those so situated that they can give one-half or more of their time exclusively to the work of the Lord, we have a plan to suggest. [We refer to those who have not families dependent on them for support-- both men and women,] viz: That you go forth into large or small cities, according to your ability, as Colporteurs or Evangelists, seek to find in every place the earnest Christians, many of whom you will find possessed of a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge; to these seek to make known the riches of Our Father's grace, and the beauties of His word, giving them tracts; and as a work of kindness and love to them, endeavor to sell them the "Day Dawn," or to take their subscription for the "Watch Tower," [or if interested, but too poor to purchase, presenting the same as a gift from God.]
As few could afford to travel, pay their board and clothe themselves without some income, we propose to furnish the TRACTS and DAY DAWNS free, and to allow any such person to take subscriptions for the WATCH TOWER, using the money obtained from both of these sources, ("Day Dawn and Watch Tower,"-- the Tracts are free and must not be sold,) in defraying necessary expenses. Should your receipts be more than would be needed to pay expenses, (not at all probable,) you would be expected to make some returns to us.
The second edition of Day Dawn (1882) was written after the break between Rusell and Paton and having this available will help researchers understand the differences that developed. It will also be helpful to have these other books too.
For those who already have the first edition in PDF -- I note that the 1880 edition offered here by Atlantis is searchable. I downloaded it and found some great results from various searches. One that caught my eye was searching for "1844". Day Dawn compared the 30 year period between 1844 and 1874 as a "tarrying in the holy place." It helps to connect the Miller movement in 1844 with the movement begun by Barbour in 1873 and then continued by Russell and Paton in 1879.

My 1970s story on chronology
by Doug Mason inthis is a snapshot of activities i am personally aware of during the 1970s relative to the wtss neo-babylonian chronology.
it is not a discussion about the inaccuracy of their chronology.. .
i joined the seventh-day adventist church in 1964. later in the 1960s, we were regularly visited at the door by jehovah's witnesses.

Thanks, Doug, for this fascinating look at the development of the expose of the Watchtower's faulty chronology in the 70s. The work you and Bruce and others did back then was foundational for later research. And thanks for scanning these historical articles for all of us!

As far as I know, it was Karl Klein (in writing his life story) that quoted Rutherford saying that. It's in the Oct 1 1984 Watchtower. Klein says in a footnote in the article:
Regarding his misguided statements as to what we could expect in 1925, he once confessed to us at Bethel, “I made an ass of myself.”
Perhaps Franz cited this too? I don't know.
