And to think that Benjamin Franklin lobbied the founding fathers to make the turkey our national bird...
the wts at times prefers to not publish the memorial partaker numbers for certain years.
the wts knows what the actual numbers are as can be seen in this quote from the "babylon (booboolon) the great has fallen " book.
quote.
Yes it did, Jeff.
This also brings up the question of whether the society will have to stop reporting the numbers in the future - that 8000 odd count is starting to kind of smell, isn't it?

There were also a number of cases where convention speakers went far beyond the official WT line - probably out of the need for self-glorification. Probably some tapes may still exist of these - not much doubt was left that the end was to come in the mid-seventies. Remember the one that made out that if only we knew how long Adam was in the garden before Eve, then we actually would know the date?
Someone here has also attested to the ridiculous statements made by Schroeder after 1975 that probably Jehovah really planned it for 1975, but put it off so that we could preach from door to door some more...
Not to say that many faithful JWs today have the slightest notion of any of this, or the ability to admit that it happened.
I'm for it too. Even though I have reservations on the ethical side of it.
However, I kind of get the feeling that this subject may be holding out a lot of false hopes for some desperate people who don't need to be messed around with. No medical knowledge or reason, just a feeling.
I am also pretty sure that a lot of the agenda for the embryo aspect is simply from the pro-abortion side. But, let's face it - abortion is not going to go away...so, why not try to gain some human benefit from it if we can?

I recall a very few of the more reasonable brothers try to slow down this train wreck in around 1974 and the first months of 1975. At the same time, the society speakers were milking this for all it was worth because they liked the big increases from the hysteria.
The society itself pretty much hid under their desks until it was obvious that the numbers were really dropping by 1977 and 1978.
I will never forget a CO giving a talk to the elders (with invitations to comment) in 1978 on "why are the numbers going south?" Talk about some embarrassed silence, with a few limp-wristed things said like - "materialism", "Satan is very active", etc...
Finally, one good old honest brother about 75 yrs of age and from a little country cong. stuck up his hand and said "Maybe its because things just did not come to pass!"
He just got stared down and told that there was nothing ever taught by the society that "did not come to pass". This jerk of a CO then went on to say that it was all the lazy brothers fault and that the slackers were probably the ones who assumed "for themselves" that 1975 meant something.
i just brought balaam's ass' post about his co experiences to the top.
he'd been posting here for a few months, but just a very few times.. .
said he'd been a co for 9 years, stopped last august.
Well, maybe I was the one to screw up the timeline, but I thought that Balaam first posted in about May 2005, and then just recently said he was out of the circuit work the previous August, which I guess would have to be 2005 also.
Something about the attitude and language used in his few posts didn't really add up for a former CO, IMHO...
what year was this bible translated?
it doesnt even say who translated it.
did this russel guy get bored and want to start his own religion or something.
When I first got dragged in about 1963, the Green NWT was there in full force. I was told that it was released in stages through the fifties and that the complete thing came out in 1960 or 1961.
We should not forget that a Christadelphian (or maybe an independent) minister left the WT Society the publishing rights to a complete interlinear translation Greek<>English of the NT back in the 20's. They later plaigarized it into the Kingdom Interlinear Translation. I always thought that Freddi and the boys must have used it pretty heavily as a crib sheet during the translation days.
It is also interesting to note that the company line on that God-Awful Green cover was:
a. It reminds us of grass & trees & hence the new earth...
b. It was deliberately picked because it was different from Worldly bibles which were usually a depressing black.
c. (or, more likely) - maybe we got a great deal on ugly green naugahyde.
Most of us could not wait to get a copy of either the deluxe edition in maroon or black, or that brown "pocket" edition just so we didn't have to flash the dreaded "green" from door to door.
I guess the green bible is more or less an antique artifact now...
the irs (u.s. government agency responsible for collecting taxes & enforcing tax laws) can remove an organization's tax-exempt status if the organization has doctrine contrary to public policy, or it carries on propaganda.. as much as the wts prints on blood, not voting, shunning, etc.
which of these items can be submitted to the irs?
how does one submit a complaint to the irs?
Just for what it is worth - I think that in today's general political climate, US government agencies are a lot more likely to take the side of a religion rather than an individual ex-member.
I can still remember my brother-in-law trying to go to the ACLU for help with a lawsuit when he got DFd for apostacy - he basically got told to forget about it, that they (the ACLU) believed in unlimited religious freedoms for any and all religious organizations.
Guess he should have figured that bunch would go down on the side of an organization that hates the flag salute and the cross, but protects pedophiles.
charles taze russel was a zionist, yet today's wt has nothing to do with it.
what happened, what scriptures do they use to defend their position and why do they talk so much about the end of the world yet when you bring up israel, the ingathering and how the world is focused on destroying israel and the jews, they totally discount it as nothing.
Because he was an important and irreplaceable link in the chain of the "faithful and discreet slave", which has existed uninterrupted since the days of the apostles.
After he was dead and gone, the judge helped us to understand who really was the faithful and discreet slave.
