What are apostate lies?
by vitty inwith the hotting up of the wt articles about not listening to apostate lies.
i was wondering, when you where in the borg did you ever wonder what these "lies" were.. its a strange thing but i never did.
i never even knew what they said about us and i didnt care.. in other walks of life, if you hear that someone has been lied about, you usually want to know what it is (well i do cos im nosey) but in all my 20 years i didnt wonder about what the apostates were saying.

peak oil?
by PrimateDave ini know we have some intelligent people here, so i thought i might ask what you think about 'peak oil'.
i became familiar with the concept after watching a video a year and a half ago called "the end of suburbia".
it was strange at the time because i remembered reading a 2003 awake!

Mavie, maybe we will need Blondie to straighten both of us out here, but I was taught the creative days were 7000 years each the whole time I was in until 1981. That was why the end of the world was logically 1975, because that was the end of the 6000 years into the last creative day and the 1000 year rule of Christ just fit right in so nicely.
As I understand it, they now think that the creative days are "several thousand years each" (no explanation for the previous teaching whatsoever) and they make fun of the fundie churches that say they are a day (which incidentally is what a literal interpretation would cause one to believe).
I think their hemming and hawing on this creative day thing is a way to weasel out of some of the ridiculous chronology teachings past.

Did You Believe "The End" Was Going To Come In Your Lifetime?
by minimus inwhen the society came out in 1966 with the info that 6000 years of man's existence would come to an end by 1975, i thought it was a crock.
for 9 long years, all jws did was speculate about "when" the great tribulation was going to begin.
i always thought of jesus' words about "nobody knowing the day or the hour"----yet jehovah's witnesses figured it out?

And yet there are still over 8,000 of the annointed around, even though three generations have lived and mostly died since the gate was shut on that little flock.
But this thread and the comments on my other thread are probably proving me wrong - looks like a lot of people (way more than I thought) truly believed in this nonsense while they were in...

The awake magazine has an axe to grind on this subject.
If it can be proved (and IMHO it can) that petroleum is far older than what they believe is the maximum age of plant life (a few thousand years) - then petroleum just simply cannot be coming from plant life.
Also, they just love to poke "worldly technology" with a pointed stick in the eye. One more sign of the times - we are running out of oil.
As J.R. Ewing told Bobby on Dallas - Oh come onl, Bobby - we've been running out of oil ever since they drilled the first well...
On the other hand, a C.O. told me oil came from squished dinosaur guts.

I didn't (as per the paralell thread), but let me add - I think it was mostly on practical reasons in addition to the failure of the stated dates to come to pass.
I honestly heard one old lady proclaim at the WT study that "the new world will last forever because we know the sun is going to last forever"!
Such "logic" as this (as well as the pet lions, earth ecology infrastructure, etc.) gave me the willies the whole time I was in.

Did we really believe in Armaggedon?
by james_woods ini got jolted into a forgotten realization by arthur's world events and time of the end thread.. my personal "truth" was and is - i never even really believed in it!!!.
and, yet allowed myself to get brainwashed into following around like a robot and talking to other people like i did...unbelievable now that i think about it.
but in the back of my mind (what little part was still working on its own) i was just thinking - yea sure.

Minimus - you are so correct. Great minds indeed...
and here I was just ready to accuse you of a thread vampirirsmm...glad I pretty much used up all my poison pen juice for SlimBoyFat.
I was kind of hoping for some guesses on the stats - I would bet that nearly half of the JW's held at least a skeptical doubt of this happening before they die, and probably at least a quarter think in their heart of hearts that its all a nice fairy tale.
Of course, I guess only the shadow can see into the hearts of men.

Here is my question - wonder how many other witnesses are like this? I.E. - not really in expectation of the new system in their lifetimes, but just saying the words as if they did to please everybody else - maybe this is starting to be a problem for Brooklyn. Just maybe this could be the reason for all the whipping up of faithful to the end, wait on Jehovah, don't doubt, etc...

Which Event Made You Think That Armageddon Was Around The Corner?
by Arthur ini realize that this topic has been discussed at length, but since i'm new to this site, i wanted to pose the question again.
i ask this question because of the wide range in ages of all of you on this site.
but what about those who had already left the organization before 2001?

There was a super buzz that Friday night after the JFK shooting. Everybody thought this was IT!!! Then, by the Sunday afternoon meetings, with the Oswald shooting, we were just sure of it!!! And in a little sick note, many were using this door to door to spell out the doom message.
It all died down in about two weeks.
I do not remember any buzz at all over the RFK assasination.
But, believe it or not - a lot of people were freaked out by the Apollo landing on the moon in 1969! There was going to be "blood on the moon" -
We were at a big assembly in the ball park in St. Louis Missouri and it even got mentioned from the platform.
This also died down after a week or two.

PS - I am going to start another thread on a side thought I had on this issue (which is a little off topic for this one).

"Theocratic Warfare" - An Apostate Strategy?
by slimboyfat inwho here had ever heard of this so-called 'doctrine' of "theocratic warfare" when you were a jehovah's witness?
who has not heard of the so-called doctrine now that you are an apostate?
so why have witnesses never heard of 'doctrine', yet apostates seem to promote it as the last word on witness standards of honesty, integrity and decency?

The point is exactly this: you have been given exact quotations of this term, and practical examples where the society has actively deceived both their own people and also various governments and the general public whenever it served their purpose.
They are dishonest in that regard.
So are you in this stubborn and ridiculous thread.
