Very good, TD, advertisements and all!
I loved the quote, "...Cosmos III, begun in 1914, will end in 2874, when "The Kingdom of God" will fill the whole world..."
That's the first I'd ever seen the 2874 date. Fats.

Big, blue-eyed Judge Joseph Frederick Rutherford, 60, lives in a ten-room Spanish mansion, No. 4440 Braeburn Road. San Diego, Calif. Last week he deeded No. 4440 Braeburn Road, an adjacent two-car garage and a pair of automobiles to King David, Gedeon, Barak, Samson. Jephthae, Samuel and sundry other mighties of ancient Palestine. Positive is he that they are shortly to reappear on earth. Said he: "I have purposely landscaped the place with palm and olive trees so these princes of the universe will feel at home when they come to offer man the chance to become perfect."
Judge Rutherford's deed can scarcely be considered eccentric, for his conviction that the sunny boulevards of San Diego are soon to be trod by men with the light of ages in their eyes is presumably shared by the 1,000,000 members of the International Bible Students Association and the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society, of both of which Judge Rutherford is President. In 34 nations these members have read his declarations as editor of both the Watch Tower and Golden Age magazines.
Judge Rutherford was born on a Missouri farm, practiced law at Boonville, acquired a circuit judgeship, continued practice in St. Louis, Kansas City. He accompanied the late William Jennings Bryan on his first Presidential campaign tour, announcing him as "appointed by God to straighten out the problems of the world." Mr. Bryan's example inspired Judge Rutherford to wear habitually a black bow tie. In 1916 he succeeded the late Charles Taze Russell of Brooklyn, founder-president of the International Bible Students Association.
Members of this organization designate themselves as Bible Students. Their creed holds that Biblical prophecies govern all earthly events. By careful scrutiny of Holy Writ, the Bible Students have discerned that three periods of time, termed "cosmos," prevail in human affairs. Cosmos I began with Adam, ended with the Flood. Cosmos II began with the Flood, ended with the World War. Cosmos III, begun in 1914, will end in 2874, when "The Kingdom of God" will fill the whole world. An erroneous prophecy that the year 1928 would provide a cataclysm-- ''Nations will battle; the dead will be dung on the earth"--upset considerably the Bible Students' calculations, but the major tenets of their belief are as yet unshaken.
Newsmen last week asked Judge Rutherford whether he would not be troubled by bogus Davids applying for admission to consecrated No. 4440 Braeburn Road. Said he: "I realized the possibility of some old codger turning up bright and early some morning and declaring he was David. The men whom I have designated to test the identity of these men are officers of my societies. . . . They will be divinely authorized to know impostors from the real Princes." ... -

They Rang the bell this morning....
by caligirl inso, here we are having our usual saturday morning, and the doorbell rings.
since we are expecting the repairman for the dryer, we didn't think much of it, since witnesses have never come to our door in the 4+ years that we have been married.
it was 2 women, and one opens up with saying they were witnesses and brings out a tract that said something about the bible on the front - i didn't pay that close attention to it because i was weighing in my head what i was going to say, and how much of a discussion i would get into with them.

Caligirl, I loved the way you covered the topic of God's name. Even when I was a JW I felt somewhat uneasy, while never addressing my dad as Wesley -- yet profusely using the Creator's first name. Fats

Mmmmmm bread machines
by Lady Lee ini have a bread machine and have been experimenting with it this week.
my first breads were really dense and heavy.
they were ok but definitely not great.. so i went to the books and they said the liquids need to be lukewarm not cold from the fridge.. so after yet another white bread heavy i just tried a raisin bread recipe.. ok i'm addicted.

"I've made a mental note not to move to Arkansas where the whole wheat flour is full of critters"
Duly noted, Princess. For what it's worth, I've never seen one of them wiggle after the baking process.

Hmmm --- good!
Since I've been retired we hardly use the machine but I have wonderful memories. We're just lazy now and buy our whole wheat from the store.
I'm on a cardiac diet -- few fats except fish, nut, and olive oils (extra virgin -- yes, you can also stovetop cook with it if you watch the temp). Guess what -- you can substitute the olive oil for whatever oil the recipe calls for and cannot detect it.
We mostly made whole wheat bread and found the following helpful:
The flour is available at any grocery in our area -- Kroger, Brookshires, Jade.
Keep the whole wheat flour in the refrigerator for freshness (and to keep the population of bugs down). Yes, it's not bleached so critters love it. When you open the package you'll see them. If you think the population is too great, take it back and the store will exchange it.
You must add wheat gluten, some 4 level TSP for 1 1/2 lb loaf.
Yes, as someone else noted, make sure all the ingredients are room temp before you add to the pan -- including the yeast.
Yes, you should slice your bread when it cools, then place into individual sandwich baggies (they don't have to be freezer bags) and will last a month in the freezer without freezer burn.
Yes, we tried one of those knife guides but that makes the slices too thin. The length of the loaf is too variable based on our experience. So I divided (you can "eyeball it") the loaf into 7 pieces. That way you get same amount of carbs no matter what -- some weeks it'll be a little denser, and some weeks a little fluffier, than others.

Come one, come all and learn to write like a Jehovah's Witness
by free2beme inwanting to get a point across and needing some back up quotes or information to support you?
does it bother you that often those quotes are full of information that contradicts your thoughts or might not even support it in the least?
well today is your lucky day, for now you can write just like a jehovah's witness and look good doing it.

What a great tool, the ellipsis: "In the beginning ... Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen." Fats

Yes, Ozzie, where were the ushers to silence that disrespect?
Yes, that tape recorder was truly a wonder. One of the bros found some good deal somewhere and three or four bought into it. $100 apiece, supposedly a bargain in those days. I remember them trying to talk Dad into getting one. Ha! Mom was the sole support as Dad was disabled (though he looked healthy in one of those photos) and she earned $40 per week stitching clothes. $6 of that went toward the rent of a rabbit run tenement with no hot running water. A tape recorder was the last thing on our priority list of needs.
A tape recorder seemed some type of status symbol in those days. It was felt that one could actually glimpse what would come in future pages of WT by listening to audio tapes of the concluding comments at district conventions. Following those assemblies there would be meetings at private homes where there would be "tape listenings" -- truly insightful peeks into the future.
One of the boys from Bethel was our own Bobby Anaheim and it was his coup d'etat that made that special meeting possible. That rented KH was on the third floor (no elevator) of the Lumiansky Insurance building and boasted no more than 80 folks in attendance at its best.
It wasn't more than two years that Bobby would leave Bethel in need of dental assistance. He'd been there for some six faithful years and they told him that his dental work would have to be taken care of by his parents and to re-apply for Bethel service once he got his health in order. That hit Bobby and his parents very hard and we saw none of them from thence.
It wasn't long before we learned of his disfellowshipping.

When I was a 15 year old boy (49 years ago), not yet baptized, Fred Franz came to our KH in New Bedford, Mass. for a weekend of talks. That was a trip of some 220 miles. He brought with him an entourage of some 5 or 6 other Bethelites. I wonder if one of them was his nephew Ray. I'll post a few snapshots I took to see if any of you can help.
Number 74 is one of Fred talking to Henry Judson, our circuit overseer. In between the two, however, is one who is younger and bears some resemblance. Could that be Ray?
Number 76 is one of Fred seated in the front row, probably being introduced for the 3pm public talk (which lasted nearly two hours). Directly behind him is my dad, Wesley. On the same front row, to the left, is Frank Gonsalves, a local.
In the morning, Fred gave a talk to the Portuguese bros. that lasted just short of 3 hours. The locals say he kinda fractured their language, that it was more Spanish than Portuguese.

I intended to post a couple old (50 years old) photos that include Fred and perhaps his nephew, Raymond. Since this thread is nearly dead, I'll open a new one, probably on "Friends" section.
