jehovah's witnesses destroyed notes about child sexual abuse to stop them falling into the wrong hands and to "protect their wives", a church elder has told a national hearing in sydney.. the opening day of a royal commission hearing into abuse within the controversial church has heard how more than 1000 cases of child abuse since 1950 were dealt with internally and never reported to police.. it has also heard that victims were made to confront their abusers and left feeling as if they had sinned.. max horley was an elder for the jehovah's witness congregation in narrogin, western australia, in the late 1980s when a woman, known as bcb, was interviewed about her relationship with another church elder, bill neill.. in evidence on monday, bcb told how neill, who is dead, groomed her from the age of 15. he would tongue kiss her and spy on her when she was in the shower at his home.. when the abuse was revealed, she was asked to attend meetings where on one occasion the abuser joked about what he had done.. .

Jehovah's Witnesses destroyed notes about child sexual abuse to stop them falling into the wrong hands and to "protect their wives", a church elder has told a national hearing in Sydney.
The opening day of a royal commission hearing into abuse within the controversial church has heard how more than 1000 cases of child abuse since 1950 were dealt with internally and never reported to police.
It has also heard that victims were made to confront their abusers and left feeling as if they had sinned.
Max Horley was an elder for the Jehovah's Witness congregation in Narrogin, Western Australia, in the late 1980s when a woman, known as BCB, was interviewed about her relationship with another church elder, Bill Neill.
In evidence on Monday, BCB told how Neill, who is dead, groomed her from the age of 15. He would tongue kiss her and spy on her when she was in the shower at his home.
When the abuse was revealed, she was asked to attend meetings where on one occasion the abuser joked about what he had done.

Right now those involved in the hearing are on a lunch break. Yes, the word AWESOME describes what we have seen. A JW woman testified about her abuse after the Royal Commission attorney who summarized what was to come, finished.
Just before the break, questions were being asked by an attorney and one of the Commission's judges to an elder who was presiding when the abuse of the woman who already testified, happened. It is riveting to say the least. I'm so glad we're recording the hearing and I imagine others who have websites are also recording because, not only is this is a keeper, but as many people as possible need to see this.
The people who are part of the Royal Commission are cool as cucumbers as well as being sooooo kind. We're impressed.
Listener's description is right on the money. One thing I'd like to add is this: when the elder, Max Horley, said about reporting to the authorities and how to deal with abuse, "We know better now," the judge replied "We're only interested in how you did it then, not now"
The JWs are not going to get off the hook by saying they know better now, which is not true because the same rules are still in place, and that will be shown later.
Also we noticed that in the opening summary, it was stated that the Aussie Branch said that they and all the other branches don't make the rules, but they follow the rules made elsewhere. This is a glimpse into what no doubt will be part of their defense. Wait and see how they're going to put the blame on WT leaders in the US.

If all goes well, I will be watching the hearing beginning at 7 PM Central Time this evening (Sunday, July 26th) here in the US in the state of Tennessee.
To watch the entire hearing will be difficult for many who are interested due to the time, so we will be recording the entire hearing each day, and my webmaster will be posting all of it in segments each day as he records, on my website, Watchtower Documents. (watchtowerdocuments.org)
We might have additional information later on this evening so if you have time, watch this subject thread.

According to the article,"Why President Eisenhower Hid His Jehovah's Witness Upbringing," found at the link below, Dwight's father, David, discontinued his association with the Bible Students in 1915, but he didn't interfere with his wife's association.
For those who are interested, there's an abundance of fascinating material about the Eisenhower's religious background in the article.

An elder, Chief MD in Honolulu clinic goes door to door. Testimony given at JW convention
by AndersonsInfo inhttp://www.pressreader.com/usa/honolulu-star-advertiser/20150725/281848642300889/textview.
it sounds to me like he was a jw before he became a physician.
"kalauawa, who became a jw 31 years ago, said he had to overcome a major conflict between his religious and professional beliefs, because jws are opposed to blood transfusions.

"Kalauawa, who became a JW 31 years ago, said he had to overcome a major conflict between his religious and professional beliefs, because JWs are opposed to blood transfusions. During his residency [medical training] he resolved the dilemma by having other doctors order transfusions. 'I can't impose my religious beliefs on my patient; I have to honor their wishes ... That way I wasn't violating my conscience.'"
In my opinion, it apparently didn't violate Kalauawa's conscience to go to medical school at the same time his religion disapproved of higher education. In fact, a man couldn't hold an appointed position in a congregation if he was in university because of setting a bad example for others, especially the youth.

Good catch. When this article was sent to us by, of all people, a JW, the information sure was a surprise. Without looking in the Comments section, we decided in the interests of truth, the best thing to do was post it on JWN and see what fallout would be. Well, as has been the case in the past, JWN posters came through again and another misconception was cleared up and I didn't have to do a lick of research to right the wrong information. Thanks everyone involved.

Carter said that as a young man he used to be a Jehovah's Witness before he was a Baptist Christian.
"It's hard to grow up with such a foundational system and just let it go. I deeply believe in many Christian values: love people; do the right thing; know that there's good in everyone, that God's looking out for all of us," the former president said.
"Being a Witness was too closed an experience. That's what I walked away from, not the things I believe." Yangon, Burma, Sept. 26, 2013.

Sam Herd’s comment on the 2001 Dateline expose
by Londo111 inim going by memory, so not an exact quote...i believe this was around 2002, at the crownsville assembly hall (now sold from what i understand)..
he said basically: some people watch an hour show and give up the faith that theyve had for decades..
the impact of this show was like a canon being shot into a swimming pool.

Thanks John Aquila for the validation (relating the experience of the two young JW girls) of my opinion.
