funny how well that goes together.. interesting that several months ago people were fearful to bring their pc tablets to the hall for fear that others would judge them for their "showy display" now to see most everyone, even the tikes, with a tablet.
i can hear those little tykes now with the veruca salt voice of the old willy wonka movie, "daddy, i want a new ipad.
get me an ipad daddy!

Recovery: Julie Penoyer's faith forbids transfusions
British scientists have created a groundbreaking machine that recycles blood lost in operations.
The invention will allow Jehovah’s Witnesses to have major surgery because it rules out the need for blood transfusions, which their faith forbids.
The technology could also save the NHS millions by reducing the demand for donated blood.
The Hemosep filtering machine was used recently on Jehovah’s Witness Julie Penoyer, 50. Doctors told the freelance translator she needed to have part of her aorta – the largest blood vessel in the body – replaced because it could burst at any time, killing her.
She suffers from a rare inherited condition called Marfan Syndrome, which makes her cartilage highly stretchy, meaning the walls of the top of her aorta were dangerously thin.
But she said she would agree to surgery only if she could have the operation without a transfusion. Jehovah’s Witnesses believe it is against God’s will to ‘ingest blood’ in any way.
The team at the Trent Cardiac Centre in Nottingham then mentioned the Hemosep machine.
Unlike other blood recovery devices, it enables the collection not only of red blood cells but also of crucial cells and enzymes that help it to clot, meaning Mrs Penoyer could have the operation without receiving any blood products.
She underwent the seven-hour operation in late January and is now recovering well after spending just 13 days in hospital. Last night she said: ‘People tell me they can’t believe I’ve recently had heart surgery. At last I can breathe properly again.’
During the operation Mrs Penoyer lost more than two pints of blood. But this was pumped straight back into her body.
The machine works by filtering blood through a plastic membrane that captures vital red blood cells, clotting cells called platelets and enzymes called clotting factors.
Jonathan Bain, who operated the machine, explained: ‘We had to have everything connected in one continuous loop, so at no point would the blood have left her body’s circulation. We went to great lengths to make sure the loop was not broken.’

Discovery: The machine rules out the need for blood transfusions and could save the NHS millions by reducing the demand for donated blood
He added: ‘This was a life-saving operation because the danger was that her aorta could have ruptured at any time. That would have been catastrophic.’ But it would have been nearly impossible to save her life after a rupture without resorting to a blood transfusion, he added.
The machine was the brainchild of Terry Gourlay, professor of biomedical engineering at Strathclyde University in Glasgow.
He took his idea to Brightwake, a Midlands-based firm, which makes wound dressings and other high-tech medical products.
Founder Steve Cotton said: ‘It shows what is possible with a bit of British ingenuity.’ He has calculated the device could save the NHS more than £10 million a year by reducing the demand for donated blood.

God not-botherers: Religious apathy reigns
Across the developed world, people are losing interest in god without becoming atheists. That's a good thing
RELIGIOUS belief is usually a no-go area for British prime ministers. As Tony Blair's media advisor Alastair Campbell once put it: "we don't do God".
The current occupant of No. 10 seems to have decided otherwise. In widely reported comments made over Easter, David Cameron said that people in the UK should be "more evangelical" and "more confident about our status as a Christian country".
That provoked a chorus of dissent – some of it, rather unexpectedly, from the former Archbishop of Canterbury. Describing the UK as a "post-Christian country", Rowan Williams said that the era of widespread worship was over.
Williams is right. It is clear that the UK's past was dominated by Christianity – with a strong streak of paganism – but its present is non-religious. Just under half of British adults profess no religious affiliation; Christians of all denominations are in a minority.
That drift away from religion is an interesting phenomenon. The UK isn't becoming a country of committed atheists. Most of the unaffiliated neither accept nor reject religion: they simply don't care about it. In that respect, the UK looks a lot like much of the developed world. Even the US is heading that way (see "Losing our religion: Your guide to a godless future").
So inasmuch as there ever was a contest between strident religion and militant atheism, it seems there was no winner. In practice, however, indifference to religion looks very much like atheism, and even more like secularism.
That may alarm those who fear that the decline of state-endorsed religion will lead to social decay – a fear Cameron invoked when he said secularists "fail to grasp... the role that faith can play in helping people have a moral code".
But that fear is groundless. As the prime minister said in his next breath: "faith is neither necessary nor sufficient for morality" – a position many biologists would agree with. Morality arises from the workings of our social brains. And our exploration of the world around us helps us frame moral codes that reflect the world as it is, not as we imagine it to be.
Personal faith remains a private matter. But those passionate about religion's role in public life – whether to elevate or expunge it – should recognise they are in the minority. Increasingly, none of us "do God".

The End of the World
Last autumn, Jussi K. began to plan his disassociation from Jehovah's Witnesses. But if he left the apocalyptic movement, he would lose everything: his friends would refuse to meet him, as would probably his parents.
HE MADE UP his mind last September. He would disassociate from Jehovah's Witnesses. He was 30 years old, had grown up in a devout Jehovah's Witness family, had been baptised as a teenager, and had married a fellow Witness.
I shall call him Jussi K..
Jussi K. had devoted his life to serving Jehovah. He had dropped out of school after matriculating and begun going door-to-door, Watchtower and Awake! magazines in his satchel.
Some of us may have opened our home for him. Some may have listened and, out of countenance, accepted a copy of the Watchtower; or simply shut the door on him.
Twice a week, Jussi K. would dress up and take part in a meeting in the Kingdom Hall. He had done so since he was a child, and had developed into a popular speaker. As a sign of the trust he had earned, he had been appointed as an elder in his congregation.
He therefore found out matters not revealed to the average Jehovah's Witness. He had, for example, served in the judicial committee of his congregation, considering the sins of others.
Outside the Kingdom Hall, he knew virtually no one. Besides exercise, he had no hobbies. Every morning, he would get up at 5 am and go jogging or swimming, alone. He had told no one that he had begun to question the teachings of Jehovah's Witnesses. No one knew what he was thinking as he sat at the Kingdom Hall, beside his spouse and children, singing Kingdom songs.

"Chronicle of a Silence Endured" (chronicleofsilence.com) is a highly intriguing and deeply woven fictional piece. It chronicles the psychological and spiritual trials that befall the 'hero' as he moves through life bound by the stigma of his childhood abuse. The result is a self-imposed and family-reinforced sentence of intolerable silence across 35 years of his life.
It is a book for all to read.
The complex events that unfold are further explained applying highly-detailed psychological and spiritual research and theory. The work offers new knowledge, entertainment, and inspiration.
The events and topics that arise here are becoming increasingly universal, and that is what makes the piece so important and so relevant.
A book that will change lives By Splash Of Happy on April 26, 2014 Format: Kindle Edition This book has a clear mission. It is a difficult read as it deals with a topic that is painful... childhood abuse and trauma. BUT it is so much more than that. The story, along with the passages of spiritual inspiration and awakening challenges us to seek change within ourselves, within our families and within our communities, whether religious or non-religous. Mr. Verona's writing transformed me as the reader and it provoked thought and emotion that has made me see trauma, religion and family systems in a different light. The book transforms you and I know that it is one of those books that I will have to read again to ensure that I didn't miss anything. This book is a literary gem. This book speaks courage. This books speaks change. This book speaks hope. Well done Mr. Verona, well done.
This book will change lives today and in the future. An excellent read! By Kathleen Conti on April 30, 2014 F ormat: Paperback I bought this book "Chronicle of a Silence Endured" fully anticipating yet another story regarding child abuse in a religious setting. Only halfway through the book I found myself actively tracking down the books author Guido Verona which resulted in several long intense conversations with Mr.Verona by telephone. I have never seen a better piece of well documented and well researched work then what can be found in this book which explains in detail the epidemic dysfunction that has been occurring within the walls of the Vatican in Rome including all of it's Catholic diocese world wide, Jehovah's Witnesses, Southern Baptists and a score of other religious organizations that we read about daily in the media exposing them for their crimes against children. At the same time these religious hierarchy's are spending millions in order to keep these crimes against children a secret . The perfect storm of a corrupt religious hierarchy who are determined at any cost to keep secret it's crimes against children coupled with it's decades of abusing it's power over it's own people. What this book explains is the destructive power and deception used by religion that astonishingly will get the very parents and family of the abuse victim to side with the corrupt religious order over the safety and welfare of their own children. It is my hope that a workbook can be generated from this book that will help the hundreds of thousands of people that will be leaving these dangerous and corrupt religions in the next several years and beyond in order to fully understand and heal from the abuse they suffered. I highly recommend this book to all those who seek to understand the gravity of child abuse when it occurs in a religious setting, and why child abuse crimes have gone unchecked for decades in religions everywhere.
Guido Verona is a current graduate student in the Clinical Psychology program at Teachers College, Columbia University. He is very passionate about integrating current psychological thought and research with spirituality. He believes in tackling tough topics head on and taking risks, as this book clearly illustrates. A writer since childhood, he is also an avid hiker and deep thinker. This is his first book. For much more go to www.chronicleofsilence.com.
pathe news was a producer of newsreels , cinemagazines , and documentaries from 1910 until 1970 in the united kingdom.
its founder, charles pathe, was a pioneer of moving pictures in the silent era.
the pathe news archive is known today as british pathe.
Thanks so much wizzstick for directing us to the Pathé News archive where a few newsreels of large JW conventions can be seen.
Of interest to us was the newsreel titled, "Jehovah's Witnesses Hold Convention - 1958." Joe and I spent that convention together as an engaged couple. Joe was a Bethelite with another 18 months to go before he could leave to marry me. The newsreel brought back many fond memories of his family and my family getting to know one another. Joe worked the night-shift in the Bethel Press Room printing out Convention Reports and then hopped on a train to Yankee Stadium to attend the convention, and, of course, to sit next to me and hold my hand. Oh, to be young again! Actually, for us, being a JW then was lots of fun and it was so exciting to be with a few hundred thousand believers all with the same expectations for the future. You could feel the excitement in the air.
One particular thing hit me as I watched the short newsreel from 1958: all of those who attended are either very middle-aged, just plain old or dead (or should I say "deceased," a gentler way to say "dead"), including a young speaker, Milton Henschel, who is seen giving a lecture to a rapt audience who were expecting the end of the system and "a new order" any moment.
Here it is nearly fifty years later, the world is still ticking along with no "new order" in sight. Everyone at that convention was blinded by belief, beliefs that we foolishly allowed ourselves to put stock in which the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society taught. (But WT leaders were so convincing; after all we saw it for ourselves in the Bible in those special scriptures that were quoted to us over and over again.) And where did our beliefs get us? Headed down the same road as all humanity has done for thousands of years - the road that leads to old age and death with no exceptions. No amount of belief can change that fact. (And let that be a lesson to you youngsters.)

i was sure i had seen a photo of such a sign but couldn't prove it until last night when proof was sent to me in an email and the proof is to be found in the form of links to photos of the sign.
i was wrong in thinking the sign was on a wt factory building.
Yesterday, on the thread I started on 4/15/14, http://www.jehovahs-witness.net/jw/friends/279088/1/Essay-by-Barbara-Anderson-Whats-in-a-Name#.U1E98JAo7L9 that introduces a recent article I wrote which is posted on www.watchtowerdocuments.org , I thought I made an inaccurate statement in one of my posts about WT having a sign, jw.org, on the top of one of their buildings. I was sure I had seen a photo of such a sign but couldn't prove it until last night when proof was sent to me in an email and the proof is to be found in the form of links to photos of the sign. I was wrong in thinking the sign was on a WT factory building. It's on the top of the 25 and 30 Columbia Heights office buildings.
I believe it's important that JWN readers see for themselves that the advertising campaign for jw.org began at "home" for all of the neighborhood and travelers to see. That sign on top of WT headquarters was the beginning of WT plans to rebrand their organization with a new name. Even in the comment below seen in pages of the private blog of Jerry and Jenny, when you open the first link and find the jw.org photos, note the enthusiasm they show for jw.org as being the "correct place" to learn about the Witnesses. What happened to meetings and field service being the correct place to learn about JWs?
What we see in regards to jw.org is the new face of the WT or their "new identity" just like I discussed in my article, "What's in a Name." For WT leaders, it's out with the old Watchtower Inc., and in with a new way to get their old message out to the world. The first link is to Jerry Lee and Jenny's blog where they share photos mostly of WT construction work in Upstate NY. Scroll down to photos posted November 21, 2013 and see the huge jw.org sign on top of WT's primary office building at 25 Columbia Heights. Jerry and Jenny write in their blog that the jw.org sign went up a week earlier in Brooklyn.
"Last Friday, new banners were attached to the 25 building. They are made of mesh so wind can pass through it. They look very nice. As if they are painted on the building. They have put two banners on two corners. It is highly visible from both directions of the BQE expressway. An effective way to expose people to the correct place to learn about the witnesses."
Later in the blog, Jerry and Jenny wrote:
"We went up to roof of building 30 where the Watchtower sign is. I posted a picture earlier of the new JW.org signs on the sides of the 25 building. But now new signs have been placed on 30 as well. So those that see the iconic Lit Watchtower sign, will also see the JW.org banner."
http://jerryleeandjenny.wordpress.com/
In addition, the links below also show the jw.org sign on the 25 and 30 Columbia Heights buildings and also in their parked-car witnessing endeavor being used to push forward their old/new? message.

JULIE CARR SMYT , Associated Press
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A group advocating the separation of church and state is protesting a pair of crosses displayed for Easter on a tiny eastern Ohio village's municipal building.
The Madison, Wis.-based Freedom From Religion Foundation has challenged the claim by the mayor of Stratton that it's constitutional to display the crosses during holidays.
Mayor John Abdalla temporarily removed the crosses in January after the foundation threatened to sue, but he returned them to celebrate the Easter season. One is Latin, the other Eastern Orthodox.
Abdalla told the Steubenville Herald-Star that such seasonal displays were allowed. The mayor declined to comment when contacted Wednesday by The Associated Press , including saying whether the crosses still adorned the building's facade.
He told the newspaper he planned to remove them at the end of April. Easter is this Sunday.
In an April 8 letter, the foundation said religious displays on public buildings represent a violation of the First Amendment regardless of what time of year it is.
"While the permanent display of these crosses by the Village is indisputably unconstitutional, the seasonal display of the crosses in recognition of Easter, the Christian celebration of Jesus's resurrection, is no less illegal," staff attorney Rebecca Markert wrote. "The display of these crosses is illegal because it represents government endorsement of the Christian religion."
The foundation said this week that the village hasn't replied to its letter, which requested that the village remove the display.
Abdalla said he didn't want to discuss the matter nor could he suggest anyone who would. "No one's going to talk about this," he said.
It's not the first debate over religious freedom in the village.
In 2002, the U.S. Supreme Court sided with the Watchtower Society in a lawsuit challenging a Stratton ordinance that imposed registration requirements and penalties on house-to-house solicitation. Justices ruled the law violated the First Amendment of Jehovah's Witnesses who wished to distribute religious pamphlets door-to-door in the village.

sd-7: It's great that you questioned the accuracy of my claim about jw.org being written on the side of one of the WT factory buildings. I know I saw that photo somewhere last year, but it must have been a photo-shop joke sent to me. I believe I'm suffering from overload, what with all the info I get daily from all over the world so am getting a bit addlepated lately. I can't remove the outrageous claim I made in my post, but I stick by what I said about the name "jw.org", that it will replace the name Watchtower in the future in importance. Accuracy should be the first thing that JW critics should aim for. I goofed and I apologize. Blame it on a "senior moment" or hour or day or...
