Having a terrible voice, A MAJOR CURSE!
by free2beme inanyone hear remember the old police academy movies?
remember the black lady who had that soft sweet voice, that almost sounded like she was breathing in helium, and how people would not respect her?
i work with a woman who sounds like this, and for a long time i thought she was doing it to play the cute woman game.

I know someone with a speaking voice like this. She was telling me about how she regularly gets phone calls and the person on the other line asks to "Speak to your Mother". She had one person hang up on her because she wouldn't believe she WAS the lady of the household. I think it was pretty frustrating for her too. You're right, not something you would think to be grateful for until you know someone who struggles with it.

Enlarging and changing my business - finally.
by Madame Quixote inwell, after years of indecision and inability to settle into any real career, i have finally decided on a viable, meaningful one for me; and it's one that has endless potential (for work, at least).
i am doing research now and will probably take some courses and apply for sbc grants to start my own small-scale recycling business.
i already have a few potential clients in the people for whom i currently work, and will hopefully have references and other clients from them.

How do you make friends once leaving the Borg?
by unhappy inso i'm starting the fading out now, and i'm avoiding all kh 'friends,' but am finding it a bit lonely, as was raised in org, and was always taught to shun worldly people even at school.
does anyone have any advice or experiences about how to overcome this?
how they met and made new friends in the beginning?

What I did, going along with what Diamond Blue said, was signed myself up for volunteer opportunities. It's a great way to meet really awesome, kind people, and gives you a sense of doing something to combat negativity in the world. And it fights that negativity in your head that at least I know I carried around for a long time... telling me the world was a bad place and people were evil.
I signed myself up at the local volunteer fire department and ambulance and also would volunteer afternoons at the local retirement home. There's so many things you can do though, especially this time of year, and I know non-profit groups can always use an extra helping hand!

When you tell "worldly" people about life as a dub...
by wanderlustguy indo they get angry?
gets furious to the point i haven't even told her 10% of my past as a dub.. do you find it strangely amusing tha they get angry, and laugh or chuckle for some reason?
i do, and i think it's because i find it so ridiculous now and to see someone get flustered over it kind of reaffirms my feelings.. does it make your relationship difficult?

I guess I worry too much about people thinking I'm a nut on some kind of anti-JW quest!
With my husband, I would just share a very little bit at a time instead of hitting him all at once with stuff. It seemed like if I talked about too much at once he'd get this glazed over look and I think in his mind he was thinking "Ya ya ya... I had to go to Catholic school... the kind with NUNS, talk about traumatizing!" He knows pretty much the whole story now, but I think it took a couple of years into our relationship before he knew everything.
My friends, same thing, I share stories here and there. Enough to make them think twice before accepting any kind of literature from the JWs or allowing them to preach to their family.

Some Christian Christmas Family Traditions
by truthsearcher ini don't know if there are any out there who may be wanting to celebrate christmas this year from a christian perspective.
i thought i would share a few ways that as a family, we have tried to make "family traditions" that take the focus off of materialism and on to the celebration of the birth of christ.
you may have heard of these before.... on christmas eve, we have shepherd's pie for supper and think of the shepherds who received the good news out in the fields.

Those are some great ideas. I actually might use the one about playing Christmas carols to let everyone know they can get out of bed- I like it!

Someone from Oregon "ME" - View on this James Kim event
by free2beme ini spent last saturday about 10 miles out of grants pass bring some supplies to a friend who was in the search and rescue for james kim, and talking with people who were looking for him.
being a long time resident of oregon, i can tell you exactly where he was, as i have been down that road many many times.
it is a remote location, at best, and locals mainly use it for hunting a fishing access, or maybe a chance to go motorcycle riding through the mountains.

I grew up in Southcentral Oregon and have been on more logging roads and motorized goat trails than I can count. I think people just don't realize how quickly you can end up in BFE in Oregon. I think it's easy to not realize the danger of going out on these roads, especially in bad weather, if you don't know exactly what you're doing. Oregon may have civilization, but it's also very very wild. Like you say, every single year there's a story or two of people driving out to the middle of nowhere and getting lost. I don't think it does any good to criticize someone who's already paid the price for their bad decisions though. Hopefully if nothing else, people can simply learn from the tragedy and not find themselves in the same situation.
