Having a terrible voice, A MAJOR CURSE!

Anyone hear remember the old Police Academy movies? Remember the black lady who had that soft sweet voice, that almost sounded like she was breathing in helium, and how people would not respect her? Know anyone like this?

I work with a woman who sounds like this, and for a long time I thought she was doing it to play the cute woman game. She always talked softy and even came across to happy or sweat. You know, she sounded annoying with that squeaky little baby voice. One day I was talking to her, and she mentioned that she was in management before she worked where I do. I thought, "how could you get directions from this woman, without laughing or being annoyed." She explained that no one respected her, that they ignored her, pushed her around and when she pushed back they had no problem putting her in her place and quiting. She decided management was not for her. She even went to a speech therapist to try and sound more grown up, less cute sounding and high pitched. It was a genetic things and she is made fun of often. She even showed me how she would try and lower her tone, sound different and how much of a struggle that was. I actually found myself feeling sorry for her. To this day, people make fun of and even hate this woman, as they think it is an act.

Weird, isn't it? Some people just have terrible voices. I remember elders like this too. Giving talks with a low tone monotone, or a feminine twang, or the ever terrible lisp. I feel lucky, at times, to know my voice is pretty normal and sometimes forget how much that is apart of us.

How do you feel about your voice, does it cause problems for you or is it normal?

My brother and I have almost the same voice. I remember once calling his wife and she thought I was my brother. Just a normal Southern red neck(just kidding).

Because I use my voice every day as a major selling tool, I feel fortunate that it sounds normal and not something annoying.

My voice is pretty normal, I think.

Did you ever chat with someone online, and imagine what their voice sounds like, only to discover that it's nothing like you thought? Although some people get it right every time!

I know someone with a speaking voice like this. She was telling me about how she regularly gets phone calls and the person on the other line asks to "Speak to your Mother". She had one person hang up on her because she wouldn't believe she WAS the lady of the household. I think it was pretty frustrating for her too. You're right, not something you would think to be grateful for until you know someone who struggles with it.

I hate my voice! I am 40+ years old and sound like I am 12! I still get phone sales people asking me if my mom or dad are home!

I don't know if many people find it annoying. Only my father and brother has said so. Many men tell me they are very turned on my voice. I've been told many times I could do phone sex for a living. (For who? Pedophiles?) lol

I do feel like I don't get taken very seriously sometimes in the business world. I'm very smart, well spoken and have quite a sharp wit and sense of humor and can put people in their place very quickly if need be. This kitten does have a bite if pushed too far. Sometimes, I think my soft, young voice actually softens my message sometimes and lets me get away with saying much more outrageous, sharp or sarcastic things than other women could without getting labelled a "bitch". The tone of the voice softens the message somewhat. I guess it is a double edged sword for me.

I do find I consciously make an effort to talk in a lower tone when I think of it. If I get excited I sound like a squeaky teenager. Even I find that annoying too. I often re-record my voice mail message numerous times, lowering it again and again, so it doesn't sound like a kid left a message. If I could compare my voice to a famous person's it would probably be closest to Melanie Griffith. Some people love it, some people hate it. I guess you can't please all of the people all of the time.

ps I think my voice helped me when I was in nursing because it helped me to convey gentleness and compassion and warmth to the patients. Nothing worse when you are sick than to hear Nurse Ratchets voice bellowing over your bedside.

People have told me that I have a lovely voice but when I listen to it all I can hear is my lisp, which grates on my ear. I have been teased about my accent and told that it's not black enough. People calling for my husband and getting me have thought I was white and even asked my husband if he was married to a white or asian woman.
