This morning I found out that last night at the service meeting, a letter was read from the Society to a nearby congr. about the danger of the internet.

They warned all the DUBs about being on the internet because many are being influenced fom apostate websites and pornography.

Does anyone else have the details of what was said and read?.

Nope, sorry. But they've been harping on this and reading letters to the congregations about the "dangers of the internet" for 10 years. Obviously the R&F aren't paying any attention to them. I don't have the letter, but I'm sure it's probably in line with past warnings:

***km 11/99 p.4 Use of the Internet—Be Alert to the Dangers!***

Congregation members are protected by the Scriptural provision for disfellowshipping those who sin unrepentantly or who promote apostate thinking. (1 Cor. 5:9-13; Titus 3:10, 11) Can we expect to find these same loving arrangements when associating with others via the Internet? It has become apparent that the opposite is true. Some Web sites are clearly vehicles for apostate propaganda. Other individuals have disowned the truth because of believing information provided by apostates. (1 Tim. 4:1, 2) Given these very serious dangers, does it not seem reasonable to be cautious about becoming involved in chat sessions on the Internet?

g 2001/22 p.21 How Can I Avoid Dangers on the Internet?***

Such dangers can exist in public chat rooms established by well-meaning Christians for the purpose of discussing spiritual issues. Dishonest people and apostates have sometimes joined these discussions and insidiously attempted to persuade others to accept their unscriptural ideas.

    ***w 2005/1 pp.9-10 Firmly Uphold Godly Teaching***

In fulfillment of his words, after the death of the apostles, a great apostasy led to the development of Christendom. Today, there is no great apostasy taking place among God’s people. Still, a few individuals have left our ranks, and some among them are bent on defaming Jehovah’s Witnesses by spreading lies and misinformation. A few work with other groups in organized resistance to pure worship. In doing so, they side with the very first apostate, Satan. Some apostates are increasingly using various forms of mass communication, including the Internet, to spread false information about Jehovah’s Witnesses. As a result, when sincere individuals do research on our beliefs, they may stumble across apostate propaganda. Even some Witnesses have unwittingly exposed themselves to this harmful material. In addition, apostates occasionally take part in television or radio programs.

Here, that letter was read at the service meeting about 3 weeks ago (the week before Thanksgiving), according to my sources. The people who heard it here thought it was directed at the kids. That might just be the way the local elder framed it. It was a My Space warning . . . predators and pornography.

There's a thread about it in the archives.

    apostate websites and pornography

I think they are more worried by the first one, then the second. The first one leads to free thought, independent thinking and the way out. The second one leads to some masterbation, maybe someone cheating, but they might still think the Witnesses are god's religion.

Yes there was a letter read to the congregations about web communities and personal info on the internet.

The letter was targeted at sites like myspace.com but there was no mention of any specific website. This is a definite shift from recent assembly and convention talks that have demonised myspace, but without specifying why such sites are dangerous.

The letter was very detailed about the dangers of child predators and had the substance of the TV Dateline "To Catch a Predator" shows. It even warned of mobile phone web access.

I have to admit this was a balanced and informative letter without the haranging and paranoia of the earier "NO MYSPACE!" rants. There was little mention of apostate issues, the letter was focused on sexual predators and the dangers of having personal info for all to see on the web.
