Esther was not exemplary
by rebel8 ini watched a documentary on the discovery channel about esther's life.
i was reminded that--despite how many times i was told as a jw girl that esther was a role model--here are the things she did:had sex with the king before she was even engaged to marry him.
(according to the documentary--i don't remember that part)spent much of her time doing beauty regimens.married an unbeliever.participated in politics.concealed her ethnic background and religious beliefs.purposely got her husband and his friends drunk.only stood up for her fellow believers after being begged to by her dad and even then did so by a serious of manipulations.. if there were chat rooms back then, esther probably would have visited them too.

Interesting post. Haven't been for nearly 6 months and already forgot some stuff.....
tijkmo...you mentioned most elders would not want counsel, this is very true, MS's also take a dim view of it once they have been allowed into the "inner sanctum" of the "teaching assignments".
Soledad.....the old addage applies, if you tell someone something often enough, it becomes "truth" to them. That is why they keep using the same books over and over. One of my last talks as an elder was from the si book on bible chronology, I got my material straight out of Carl Olaf Jonnson's Gentile Times Revisited!! I thought it was great, and no body questioned it or disagreed with anything that I said about "relative chronology" of the bible.
Blondie... I was the TMSO for a fair while, then when I went up the ladder a bit, I got made the auxiliary counselor, [as an experienced speaker] I found that most elders and ms's wouldn't take it seriously at all. They would stay out of my way and when it came time for counsel, most weren't interested in what i had to say.
So what a dud arrangement. Designed to make people NOT think. Why prepare a comment for the highlights, you only have 30 seconds to say something. When it comes time for preparing for these talks, the TMSO has already given you a slip with the necessary Oral Review question that you need to cover, so dont come up with anything too interesting or that someone might benefit from, just follow the "faithful slave" [driver] and you'll do fine. -

Why some people leave and live and then it hits them
by Lady Lee ini've read a few posts lately where the people got out of the jws and went off to live their lives.
i went to college almost immediately.
it was hard and sometimes i would think about it and maybe going back.

GoingGoingGone......Many who have left feel the way you do. It all depends on why you are there and why you have left. The sad part is that while all your "friends" say they miss you, and you do miss them, that whole friendship is very conditional, as you have well figured out. They will be your friend so long as you attend all the meetings and the rest of it. Sounds healthy doesn't it. How does your husband feel about the way you see things?
That is the hard part.
My wife and I are waking up at he same time, although her and the children have disliked it a lot longer than me. I get cross about the people that we know who say they miss us, yet they know where we live, our phone number hasn't changed and yet they dont call. Yet they care?
We have had two elders call in on different occasions individually, not one of them is game to ask or challenge us on anything. Talk about work, weather any thing but why we aren't going anymore.
So you are not on your own... -

I am 45, and neealry old enough to be on the GB....And you Ozzie are a definite shoe in for the next Aussie representative!!!...should've started drinking the wine at the memorial and not finishing the bottle at home later!! As for the dry biscuits...they always needed some cheese or dip!! How does the average JW feel about these changes? Has anyone heard anything from anyone still attending?

Hi ozzie and all, I have just been working working working, now that i have an extra day and a half at least in my life, we have been trying to make the most of it. Haven't been reading much on JWD or anything else. Getting through a few family events and feeling slightly outcast...ish. They all seem to know we aren't attending anymore, but no one wants to address it!!!!!

You could lay out some jw books and jw magazines at "appropriate" articles that suggest that non jw's examine their religion to make sure it is true, leave out old books like the harp of god or millions now living will never die......... It probably makes no difference, they know something is up anyway. We hide all our books, Ray Franz, Carl Jonnson, Edward Gruss, etc, but they are in the cupboard if they get snoopy..... My mother-in-law came over and told us about what a great talk the CO gave. She was just about to tell us stuff from it and I said that she should expect a great talk from him, thats why they pay him the big bucks!! we laughed and she shut up!!

Getting to understand the same feelings. We breezed into a District Convention last year....just to be seen then had lunch and quietly left.....picked up all the new releases blah blah blah. We did sit through the one day assembly and felt nauseous all day...what a waste of time, could have stayed in bed and enjoyed a JW free day in town! Didnt go the the 2 dayer. No one has even asked what happened or where were/are you... The memorial shouldn't be a problem next year.
