  Bad Gorby! Bad!

  Personally I'm a bit frightened of this strange new world where things can be so easily faked. How long until virtually any text, image, audio or video can be faked to a level that is indistinguishable from the real thing? And then how will we be able to trust anything in the world?

  When any piece of evidence can be faked to be indistinguishable from the real thing, how can journalists do their work, or lawyers, or judges, or historians, or anyone else? How will society function?

  The more I think about it the more I think this could be a real threat to life and civilisation as we know it.

  With the information we have, is there any rational reason (other than wishful thinking and cognitive bias) to assume he's buying all those bottles for personal consumption?

  Nothing that proves it’s for personal use, but some reasons for thinking it’s more likely than not. Such as the way he talked about the subject of alcohol when approached.

  Plus, in the wider context, the fact that he is a war veteran who witnessed carnage in Vietnam. He has clearly been affected by these experiences, judging by his public comments, so heavy alcohol consumption would be consistent with that. It doesn’t prove anything, but it would make sense.

  While it’s fair to recognise there are other possibilities, it seems reasonable to conclude the alcohol was likely for person use, or at least for consumption with a few others including his wife. What we do with that conclusion is another matter. How often does he buy that amount? Is that a problem or not? I don’t know. I follow the indications of others who know more about alcohol consumption than I do.

  It’s interesting he says he’s been to Scotland a number of times. I don’t remember him ever being in Scotland. There’s no branch to visit in Scotland, so it would be a convention, if anything. I wonder if these were working trips or leisure.

  I am curious how AM would have reacted if it had been an adoring JW who recognised him and engaged in conversation. Would there have been any embarrassment or not, I wonder? Or if a JW had challenged him about being stumbled by his purchase, I wonder how he would have handled that.

  And I wonder if he knows about the video by now. Some at bethel have probably already seen it. Would they pass it on?

  It might lead to the GB going out in public less often, or dare I say it, even more of a bunker mentality.

  It does look like a flasher trench coat. He looks dodgy more than anything else, even if nothing technically wrong. It makes you wonder what a private investigator would turn up if a wealthy ex-JW chose to track the GB for a while, out of curiosity.

  I’ve never heard JWs define pornography as sexual immorality.

  I think the change to “sexual immorality” is mainly an attempt to modernise the vocabulary because nobody uses the word fornication any more, unless it’s a comedian using it for a joke.

  I know a brother who was inactive for years and had a box of alcohol delivered once a week. One Saturday the box was delivered just as two elders made a visit to his door. The elders said the box of alcohol was enough evidence he was a drunk and disfellowshipped him. There’s more to this story as well. The reason the two elders were calling on the brother was because his mother (a JW for nearly 60 years) had recently died and they intended to make arrangements with the son, who has severe psychological issues, to have her cremated. In the end I don’t think the sister ever was cremated. We are not sure what happened to her body, but her son was disfellowshipped for being a drunk.

  a study of religious retention rates–that is, what percentage of people raised in a particular church or religion stay with it when they are grown–is quite interesting.

  Probably true that JW retention is comparatively low, but as is often pointed out it’s a shame Pew sample for JWs is quite low (less than 200 I think) to be sure about the exact percentages.
