LoveUni since the whole thread is about Harris I took that as given. Harris opposed Trump but in many ways supports Trumpism. He agrees with Trump about Islam, racial profiling and bombing civilians in principle, he just thinks Trump is not the guy to execute the policies because he is crazy. I have listened and read a lot by Sam Harris, probably more than you.

The world needs more voices like Sam Harris, Ayan Hirsi Ali, Maajid Nawaz, Gad Saad, Jonathan Haidt, Jordan Peterson and Douglas Murray.
Gad Saad supported Trump. Murray refused to say if he supported Trump but said he opposed Clinton. I don't know about the rest, where did they stand?
It's amazing you'd hold up as admirable a list including people who supported Trump. Why does the world need more voices of people who are so confused in their moral thinking that opposing Trump is not a no brainer for them?

Yes that's the game Harris plays. He says using nuclear bombs on Arab civilians may be necessary, but because he also says it's horrible you are not allowed to criticise him for arguing it is necessary. Somehow this makes sense to him.
Two devout Christians, Bush and Blair, launched war on Iraq (that Bush described as a crusade) which killed hundreds of thousands or perhaps millions of civilians. Both cited their Christians faith. Is there any good reason this shouldn't count? And doesn't it dwarf all the smaller terror attacks combined?

No Sam Harris said them, long before Trump even ran for president.
Racial profiling, Muslim faith evil, using nuclear bombs on Arab countries may be necessary. Check it out.
When people argue Islam is an especially evil religion they often point to verses in the Koran that promote killing non-believers or sexism or homophobia. But what about the Bible verses that do the same? That's different they say because Christians don't take those verses seriously. Yet history shows they did and some still do. And on the other side you have devout Muslims whose religion moves them to peace and tolerance. So if isn't the text and it isn't the bahaviour that sets Islam apart, what is it but pure bigotry?

Harris doesn't deny labelling Islam, being in favour of racial profiling, or floating the idea of using nuclear bombs on Arab countries. Instead he attempts to justify. And Harris has this weird way of behaving that involves making stupid and obnoxious statements, such as using nuclear bombs, and then crying foul that anyone should take him at his word. Because he says it would be "terrible" somehow cancels out that he says it may be "necessary". It doesn't cancel it out.
Stigmatising religious groups is wrong. Racial profiling is wrong. Arguing for using nuclear weapons on civilians is wrong. Sam Harris said all these things. He is wrong. When someone is as far gone as Harris is I guess it would be near impossible to get him to realise his programme of stigmatising Muslims is harmful and has contributed to where we are right now.

Labelling a world religion as evil, promoting racial profiling, and floating the "idea" of nuclear bombing Arab countries is in no way "addressing legitimate concerns". It helped stigmatise a minority group and Trump ran with it.

Quite clearly, anyone with a bit of honesty and reasoning abilities realizes that "buffoonery", "clown" "awful man", "pathological liar", "jackass" are insults, not evidence.
I would drop "jackass" because I'm not sure what it means beyond a pure insult. However Trump is demonstrably a pathological liar. This is not an insult it is pure description. Meaning that he lies habitually and even lies when it should be obvious to himself that the people he is lying to know that he is lying. But he can't stop himself. And if his behaviour toward women does not qualify him as an "awful man" then I don't know what ever could. I think he is also a clown in the precise sense that people don't take his problematic behaviour as seriously as they should. "Buffoonery" I am not sure about. He certainly does have a track record of messing stuff up if that's what's intended.
I agree with Harris's description of Trump's character, his lack intelligence and lack of humanity. If Sam Harris is overly emotional then it may be because on some level he realises that his Islamophobic rhetoric of the past ten years has helped create Trump.
But I would argue emotion is not inappropriate at this moment either. America has entered a very dark place and the way out of this situation is not at all obvious. It was especially unsettling watching Obama sit with Trump the other day. He was acting as if this was simply a handover to someone of a different party and a different political persuasion. But really this is a handover from a thoughtful, intelligent, humane president, to an narcissistic, angry, impulsive, abusive, pathological liar. I guess Obama and the rest have to pretend that Trump is a normal human being in the faint hope that treating him as such may prompt him behave like one. What else can they do? It's a terrible situation.

I listened to the message but Sam Harris doesn't apologise, or indeed say anything about, the part he played in creating Trump. Nothing about his promotion of Islam as essentially evil, enthusiasm for racial profiling, or saying nuclear bombing Arabs would unpleasant but might be necessary. He said these things before Trump was a candidate. I doubt Trump is a fan, but Harris laid the intellectual groundwork and helped create the atmosphere that made Trump possible. Instead Harris is doubling down with the bizarre claim that "safe spaces" and liberal tolerance of religious freedom are the real culprits.
To be clear the remedy for Trumpian fascism is no compromise in asserting equality for all regardless of race, religion, gender, sexuality and whatever else. Unfortunately that's not a message, given his history, that Harris is able to deliver.
These things should be so obvious they don't need saying. Between maniacs like Trump and intellectual charlatans like Harris, our culture has lost its way. This situation is deeply depressing.

My gay friend went back to JWs?
by schnell inone of my best friends was disfellowshipped several years ago, and word quickly got around that it was because he's gay.
we lost touch after that because of the disfellowshipping, but since i'm out now, i just found him online and got back in touch with him.
it was a great conversation, but he said he returned to jehovah.

I knew a gay elder who left in 1999 and returned in 2001 after the terrors attack. As far as I know he's still in but not an elder again, Crazy.

Trump isn't in power yet. The noises he's making now show he knows the convention of what the president elect says in the transition period. In a way his chameleon character in the last couple of days is more disconcerting than if he had just stayed the same.
The real test comes in how he reacts when journalists write things about him he doesn't like. And when other politicians and foreign leaders frustrate his plans. His track record of tolerating others and accepting limits and codes of conduct is extremely poor.
