Oh, and if anyone can claim to understand Ezekiel, Daniel, or Revelations, I think they must be stoned (but do I mean that literally or figuratively? recreationally of judicially?)

...and why isn't this little gem still enforced: "...let the women keep silent in the congregations, for it is not permitted for them to speak..."?

Just loaded the 2003 Watchtower CD rom......
by jimbob inactually, i loaded it for my mother.
i had to do a little work on her computer today and she had just gotten the cd and asked me to load it for her.
what was interesting was the dialog box agreement that the user had to agree to in order to load it.

A few select bits of it are quite sensible but seem to be in the minority. Could never make sense of any of it as a complete collection. And it has given me nightmares from the time I was a little little girl. I keep a copy as a curioddity and for reference purposes but it is not on my recommended reading list. For me, it ranks right up there with the Malleus Malificarum in its views and treatment of women.

-Getting baptized (what's taking you so long? you don't have DOUBTS*, do you*?)
*DOUBTS said in the same tone of voice as DEMONS
-Pioneering (24/7)
-Not "looking back" at boys, college, or anything else you have to leave behind to be "in good standing" (brain, heart, libido)
-Knowing all the right "catch phrases" and liberally sprinkling them throughout even the most casual conversation
-Wearing feminine yet conservative clothes (if you're female, that is)
-Refraining from using Strong's Concordance to prepare yet another stale and meaningless "talk"
-Remembering to gesture appropriately while giving a talk
-Refraining from showing too much compassion to the weak, the doubtful, and the depressed (leave that to the elders)
-Raise your hand about every 5th or 6th question (not too much, not too little) and rearrange the material in the paragraphs just enough so that it shows that you ARE thinking but not INDEPENDENTLY.

How many were raised as a JW during their teenage years?
by codeblue in.
and how many of you feel because of that, you never really got to be a "teenager"?

I still haven't figured out how much of my current social alienation stems from being a teenage "truthie" (kinda like a groupie) and how much of it is just me. I never truly felt "at home" with my family who were very close-knit and up to their eyeballs in JWism, never fit in with witness kids (even though I tried and may have appeared to), and never felt drawn to "worldly" kids and social events either.
Even before my teenage years, JW religion was entirely unsatisfying to me and I felt that it offered nothing more than pseudo-spirituality, pseudo-science, choppy history, and bad personal advice. There were never many kids my age in the local congregation and it would not be stretching the truth (!) to say that my best friends were always trees, rocks, animals, music, and books (not published by the WTBTS).
I haven't even felt that I fit in here at all until someone gave me first electronic hug. (Thanks for that, by the way!)

Portland OR XJW Meet-up - A question from Scott for us all
by Glenmore inmy wife (jill) came with me, only because ordrade would be there, and we had a good time.
i should drink red wine on an empty stomach more often, i'm a cheap drunk!
i think our basic "answer" was to stay close to them, be the best dad he can be, take them to the zoo, do all the things you can to be a rock for them, and don't make issues out of the jws in case it backfires, just be there for them - always.. so the question for us all that i would like to extend for scott is, what can he do, what should he expect and how can he handle this torment?.

It might be helpful for him to read the personal account at www.freeminds.org/psych/exithelp.htm . Even though it was written by a father who was once a JW elder, there are still some really valuable tips that could be adapted for use by anyone. He emphasizes questions and listening, and providing a safe comfortable environment where the kids can really open up and talk about their truest, deepest thoughts and feelings. A quote from this account I really like is: "My goal was to never make conclusions for them. Rather, walk them through the material slowly and look at all sides and allow them to make conclusions for themselves. I made no judgements and did not make negative remarks..." This would require familiarizing oneself with certain key issues and beliefs, but just might be worth it. Kids are smart. When presented with intelligent questions and given free access to information, they can figure things out real good for themselves. What is important is the surety that they are loved no matter what. (That's my take on it.)
