Rationalism and religion
by Narkissos ini've not been too good at creating topics thus far, but for my 1000th post (in case you wouldn't notice .
we often oppose reason (ratio) and belief, as if those were mutually exclusive.
reason always works from presuppositions.

I think I'm not smart enough to respond to this post... but I am interested in what you say, even so, and am looking forward to other replies because I am seeking a greater understanding of what always seemed to me to be pseudo-logic in the teachings of the Org.
HAPPY 1000 !!!!!!!

SHAKESPEARE: if Will was alive today and wrote for the Watchtower....
by Terry inwhat sort of things wouldst he write?
-
MerryMagdalene
This isn't Will writing for the WT, but Helena (from A Midsummer Night's Dream) facing a Judicial Committee:
O spite! O hell! I see you are all bent
To set against me for your merriment:
If you were civil and knew courtesy,
You would not do me thus much injury.
Can you not hate me, as I know you do,
But must you join in souls to mock me too?
If you were men, as men you are in show,
You would not use a gentle lady so;

Fearing the Pain
by rockhound inafter the death of her witness father, a dear friend of ours told us her mother, in deep depression, said "this wasn't supposed to happen.the new system should have come by now" .
depression is not unique to this heart broken sister.
a witness in our old hall was out in service one day with four pioneer sisters.

Interesting information and application to J-dubs, Rockhound! But I'm afraid that most of them lack the necessary incentive to face the immense pain that can come from the loss of all that they have held dear for so long. Fear wins out all too often which, I guess is the reason for the ongoing success of the WTBTS empire. It capitalizes on their fears and numbs their pains and stunts their growth. Sad

also from "Facts for Shareholders":
IF THE Shareholders desire to defeat the present President and Treasurer and any of the pseudo Board of Directors in disapproval of the present temporary management, they should remember that scattered votes will never accomplish the purpose. As many will always vote for those in power, we therefore suggest that the Lord may have indicated to us at the time of our Pastor?s death by the association and presence with him of Brother Menta Sturgeon, that he would make a satisfactory President. We suggest, therefore, that Brother Sturgeon be voted into the office of Director, and then voted for by those wishing to select a new President.
Those who think that Directors should be commended who have the courage to do right at all hazards at the cost of position and livelihood, should vote to sustain the deposed Directors. We suggest this as an encouragement to them, and that future Boards may pursue a righteous course always.
The following are the names to be voted for Directors and officers: 1. MENTA STURGEON, Director and President 2. ALFRED I. RITCHIE, Director and Vice-President 3. M. CLAY ROCKWELL, Director and Secretary-Treasurer 4. J. DENNIS WRIGHT, Director 5. ISAAC F. HOSKINS, Director 6. ROBERT H. HIRSH, Director 7. ANDREW N. PIERSON, Director

You can also read about Russell's last days as related by his personal secretary and traveling companion, the above-mentioned Menta Sturgeon, at:
www.heraldmag.org/olb/contents/history/st%20paul%20memorials.htm
including the one (and only?) prophesy to actually come true:
Brother Sturgeon, seeing the end approaching, prepared a telegram to the Bible House as follows: "Before the close of October our dear Brother Russell will be with the Lord in glory;" but before he sent it added the words- "we are alone and Brother Russell is dying like a hero."

From "Facts for Shareholders":
"WE NEVER HAD A SATISFACTORY REPORT FROM THE TREASURER SINCE I HAVE BEEN A DIRECTOR.
We do not know how the trust fund stands, nor how the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society stands. What are our financial relations between the Watch Tower B. & T. Society and the Peoples Pulpit Association? How is the trust fund invested? What are the securities? What interest do they draw? "WE WANT THE BOARD RECOGNIZED, AND TO BE PERMITTED TO GO ON DOING BUSINESS UNTIL THE END OF THE YEAR, OR UNTIL SUCH TIME AS WE CAN RESIGN, WHEN WE SHALL HAVE NO FURTHER FINANCIAL OR OTHER RESPONSIBILITY.
"What is the condition of the Society?s funds? Where was the amount of $100,000 borrowed for the Drama work? To whom was it returned? What interest was paid on this borrowed money? "In event of this matter coming before the courts, these features, of course, will be made public. Why not instead give us this information as members of the Board, to whom it is due? If the court should say, ?What about this fund?? each member of the Board would necessarily answer that he knew nothing about it.
If the money had been poorly invested, the Directors, as members of the corporation, would be held responsible.
"We way not be responsible for transactions made during the life time of Bro. Russell; but the Board is entitled to a full explanation of the accounts subsequent to his death."

Not that they are anything you could ever prove, but it is interesting what these various speculations and the research they engender contribute to the overall picture of the man, the myth, the b'org.
What was the WTBTS corporation (and control of it) worth back in 1916, anyway? What potential might have been seen for it? Murder or not, there had to be one or more reasons JFR did what he did to get and keep control of it. A couple mansions, nice cars, personal secretaries/cooks/dieticians... that's not too shabby in and of itself, especially back in the depression era.

My 3 year old daughter loves those inexpensive packages of plastic animals (farm, jungle, dinosaur, etc.), horse figurines, movie action figures (Toy Story, Shrek, A Bugs Life), castles/barns/dollhouses, cars/trucks, art supplies (paper, color books, crayons, finger paints), pop-up books, Leap Frog Quantum Pad, and her new Baby Newton "Fun with Shapes)" CD-ROM from Baby Einstein. She also likes using the art program on my old MacIntosh computer.
Have fun shopping!

Good gum-shoeing, Gumbyshoe!
Here's my small contribution on how da Judge first entered the scene a few years earlier:
Rutherford was first contacted by 2 Bible Student colporteurs in 1894 at the age of 24. He bought some books from them and then wrote a letter of appreciation to the Society. He wasn't baptised until 1906 at the age of 36. Then one year later, in 1907 he went to Brooklyn to serve as the Society's legal counselor. Nothing damning here, but the date of his arrival in Brooklyn does happen to match the first date of poisoning mentioned in Mr. Stanley's letter (although it doesn't say if there were any claims of attempts before that). --all this (and more) according to W. Hagen at: www.freeminds.org/history/mystery_years.htm
Curioser and curioser.
