Albert Schweitzer and Roland de Vaux: advice needed
by behemot ini'm considering getting from the library albert schweitzer's the quest of the historical jesus.
a critical study of its progress from reimarus to wrede (1906)and roland de vaux's ancient israel volume 1: social institutions (1958) and volume 2: religious institutions (1960).. i'm aware that biblical studies have gone a long way since these two (already classic) works were written, but i was wondering whether they are still worth reading or have become in the meantime completely outdated.. anybody read them?
your advice welcome.. behemot.

JWs insensitivity to human tragedies
by behemot ininsensitivity to tragedy, especially when it interferes with their plans, seems to be the norm among jws.. the story about the kansas city k.h.
suicide, and the concern local jws are showing, mainly toward the rebuilding of the hall, reminded me of something that happened in rome, italy at the 2000 international assembly at the olympic stadium.
i was there as a delegate.. on saturday morning, just before the start of the program, a 27 y.o.

Hope of earthly paradise and its critics: nothing new under the sun
by behemot inapparently also among early centuries' christians there were some who believed in an earthly paradise and in physical blessings, just like modern jws do.. and i found amusing how the following criticism by church fathers, pointing out the basic hedonism behind such beliefs, looks very much like comments often directed against jws:.
"(...) at this time cerinthus, the author of another heresy, made his appearance.
caius (...) writes as follows concerning this man: "but cerinthus (...) says that after the resurrection the kingdom of christ will be set up on earth, and that the flesh dwelling in jerusalem will again be subject to desires and pleasures.

Funeral burnings for deceased kings in the OT
by behemot in2 chronicles 16:14, 21:19 and jeremiah 34:5 talk about the practice of funeral burnings for the deceased kings of israel.. i read in an essay by professor rudiger schmitt (munster university) published in "the journal of hebrew scriptures" that such "special ritual actions ... may have had an apotropaic function like similar rites in mesopotamia".. anyone has more info on this practice, its possible meaning and/or similar rites in the ancient near east cultures?.
you can access the text of the essay here:.

Junias: a female apostle in Romans 16:7?
by behemot inin his book misquoting jesus, bart d. ehrman claims that the "junias" mentioned in romans 16:7 with andronicus among those "who are of note among the apostles" (nwt: "who are men of note among the apostles") was actually a woman.
i don't see the word "men" in the original greek, so i suppose it has been added in the translation to dispel the embarrassing thought of the existence of female apostles in the early church.
similar adjustments can be found in other translations: kjv, esv, nasb, rsv, asv have "kinsmen", nkjv has "countrymen".

Daniel 4:15 and the iron/copper banding of the tree
by behemot inin his book four strange books of the bible: jonah, daniel, kohelet, esther (shocken books, new york 1967), elias j. bickerman, commenting on daniel 4:15, states that representations of the "sacred tree" with bandings similar to those described in that verse have been found on mesopotamian monuments.. i'm reading a translation of the book that lack notes and therefore i'm not able to trace the information's source.
does anyone here know about this iconography and its possible meaning?.
