Actually the seeking would not be in conflict with a developmental view, but why seek without if it's something in your heart? It's actually not a rhetorical question. Religious beliefs would be something that people came up with to describe what they believe, that is not seeking anything but rather an expression or description. Coming up with a religion and following a religion are completely opposite movements.

Could the invention of religion have been a mistake?
by Mad Sweeney inis it possible (and is there any evidence?
) that religion was invented by mistake?
that perhaps someone wanting to describe the reasons for things not understood used metaphors that the ignorant took literally?

the mcdonald's wedding packageby john farrier in business on oct 14, 2010 at 2:24 pmafter a couple met, dated, and then hosted their wedding party at a mcdonalds location in hong kong, the company began offering wedding packages in that city:.
the package has all the details to attract a wedding banquet cynic or a golden arches obsessive: a baked apple pie wedding cake, dress made out of party balloons, kiddie party favors for guests, and of course, catering by mcdonalds.. alcohol is banned to make sure there wont be drunk party guests acting inappropriately at the family venue, so newly weds will have to toast their union with soft drinks instead.. the cost will be a few thousand hong kong dollars, depending on what guests order on the spot.

Well what I'm saying is it does not necessarily have to be one guy, even if you could track down the first one if they developed the belief independently then it's not just a matter of his psychology and him influencing others. After all, they couldn't readily spread ideas far and wide like we can today.
What I find is it is just as interesting to look at the development of human consciousness on a collective level as it is on an individual level. Obviously there is a lot of research involved but some who have done the work have interesting models as far as the different phases, and it seems to relate to our individual development as well.

Well we know even within the realm of Christianity, for example some take the ideas more literally than others. Remember too the collective consciousness of people were different too, the belief in gods tends to follow a kind of anthropomorphic projection right? God is like a person with the usual personality traits. I'm sure anthropologists have found groups who independently developed ideas of deities in different parts of the world. Point is people do tend to assume the ultimate reality takes the form of their personal experience in some way, rather than something other than what they already know.
And of course, you don't need to be an innovator to capitalize on an existing idea.

It's also in Advaita Vedanta, but it's not really about the method. I guess with scientology that's where something like "refreezing" comes in, you'd need to essentially stop at the point where the individual identity is dissolved and go no further in order to restructure and solidity a new identity. What people don't realize is an unidentified consciousness is very functional, because it's rather amorphous and at a certain point you're not going to get someone to go for another stupid lemming identity because it'd be way too easy to see through it.
Actually inquiry is actually a positive and direct way, it doesn't bother so much with who you are not.

You don't need to do the exercise with someone else although it may help, and possibly more so if they're more interested than you are. People also do self-inquiry but it's not like asking questions will magically yield results, and sometimes it's a matter of finding the right question that is most meaningful to the individual. Ultimately it's a matter of interest, that'll direct your attention inward. People will have questions that spontaneously arise along with a great deal of interest, it is so internally motivated that the question doesn't even necessarily come from anywhere else.
