Narkissos, I believe you when you say that the scriptures present emotions better than other literature of the time. I think this could be part of the reason that the Bible has had so much success, it appeals to emotions rather than logic. Like the story of Jesus Christ, full of logical holes but high in emotion.
It's actually David's actions that I find fault with rather than his expressions. But it could be that I was more sensitive to his faults because he was crammed down our throats as an example to be followed and we weren't able to disagree.

Narkissos, You could very well be right, but to my eyes he always seemed to lack any real depth of feeling. He seemed to have the ability to display some sort of outward display of affection when the person was present and/or useful to him. But it always seemed to be shortlived. A bit like his grief over his first born with Bathsheba. It was all a showy display with no substance. He was a conman, trying to sucker God into changing his mind.
His affections for the women in his life appeared to be almost entirely sexual. Once he had them he was on to the next. As far as his affection for Jonathon goes, he couldn't have had much real respect or affection for him. The way he dealt with Jonathon's sister, Michal (who had also saved his life), I thought was quite cold and heartless.
But it's been a very long time since I've read any of these accounts. This is just what I remember my feelings to be about this character. And it feels really good to say what I actually think. :)

Yes, I agree. The WTS is setting themselves up to be judged. But they aren't the only religion to believe that they are the "true" way.
While I was a JW I did my absolute best to follow the Bible and behave like a Christian. I viewed myself as a follower of Christ, but I have never believed he is God. Was I a Christian? (I no longer view myself as a Christian and have serious doubts as to whether he ever existed. But that's a completely different subject.)

alotlikemay, We're picking on King David's fallibility because he has been lifted up as an example to be followed and he's anything but.
On a different note, I tried to edit my last post to say: The different traditions on King David make him appear to be schizophrenic, not sociopathic. His obvious lack of any natural affection for the people in his life would make him a sociopath.
My own personal opinion is that he's just a story. -

I don't know if what I did would be considered singing, but yes. Some songs especially I choked on. I made sure that our song books went in the trash because I never wanted to hear them again. I knew my husband would haul them out and torture me with them. So, what happens? He finds one in his Grandma's old house. arggghhhhh He thinks this is funny. lol

Narkissos, Yes, there isn't just one "David" tradition. That's why he comes off looking like a sociopath. And that's why he's so useful to the WTS (and many other groups) ;)
But no matter which account you talk about, I personally dislike the guy. He's definitely not someone I would want to meet.

As some here have said, some are "Christian" and some are not. I don't believe you can use your personal interpretation of scripture to judge them as non-Christian. If you do, you're being judgemental and not very "Christian".
I think what Kid-A said is right on the money.

Whats the strangest thing you've seen someone get in trouble for?
by LaniB ini remember one windy summer day, after a meeting on sunday morning, i walked out of the hall behind a sister who was part of the church congregation with her two teenage children.
her husband did not attend.
the wind caught her dress unexpectedly and blew it up a'la marilyn monroe and revealed that she was wearing (shock, horror) french knickers...... there were a few murmers behind me which i at the time put down to things like "oh poor girl, so embarrassing".

A MS in our hall was asked to step down because his son (not living at home, not an active JW) and a "spiritually weak" single sister met and fell in love. Supposedly this MS and his wife were accidently the reason they met.

I don't believe that he was even an ideal ancient king/warrior. He was quite often cowardly in his behaviour. For instance, he was afraid of his own army commander, Joab. Rather hard to understand when you compare that to his supposed attitude when facing Goliath.
As far as judging him by the standards of his own time, even his contemporaries in the biblical accounts found him weird and difficult to understand.

Edited to say: I agree that he's the perfect hero for the leaders of the WTS. -

I don't know, Terry. I never liked King David. Not even when I was a zealous JW. He was selfishness to the extreme, cowardly, rude and just generally obnoxious. A loveable scamp he definitely was not. Right up to his final days he was a heartless lecher. He didn't have an ounce of natural affection, it was all outward show.
He was definitely a sociopath.
