Many people do not show affection- why is this?
by gumby inwe all know people who will not show affection to those they love or care deeply about.
why cannot a father who loves his daughter deeply...........ever hug her and tell her how much he loves her?.
why cannot some spouses tell their mate they love them?.

It is true about your upbringing being a major influence...after all that is when and where we first experience...whatever happens. Love, hate, indifference, helpfulness, abuse, kindness or meaness. It may be one parent is the polar opposite of the other, it was that way in my family.
My Mother was extremely loving and kind and fair (and a JW!), my father was all business...extremely strict disiplinarian who could be mean and unfair, but was not abusive, he was not a JW. I have a brother that 'took' after him, the rest after my Mom. I could never figure 'why' he was so hard on me, the first son, especially. My Mom said, he was afraid I would become a 'sissy' boy...if he was not tough on me, he really said that !
Sometimes you have to take the Bull by the horns (we were always locked). A big change occured when he was about to undergo a very dangerous operation where he could have died, they were wheeling him down the hallway...I stopped the gurney. I said I need to talk to my Dad... I said, "Dad, I love you. I have never in my life heard those words from you and you are not moving an inch...until I hear it now..." You could hear a pin drop in that hallway...no one ever dared demand anything from him like that. He looked up at me...with the most peaceful look and said, "________, I Love you..." and smiled. I said, "Well, OK. You can go now."
After that ? Things have progressively gotten better, he even initiates a hug sometimes...

She wants out
by zilent inafter reading various threads and thousands of messages, spending long days and longer nights thinking of this (which is absolutely nothing compared to what she's been through because all of this) i finally understand her silent call for wanting out.
all the signs.. they've been there, visible all the time.. you guys, all of you have been so helpful just by existing and sharing your thoughts publicly here.. thank you.. but it's just beginning, she's still scared, i know.
i will be there for her, but tell me every possible way i can help her with this, please.. zilent

Hey Zilent,
Welcome to this board; Keep reading...get her to read somehow. People here believe (or don't) in a very wide range of things, you won't agree with everyone, some may disgust you. Most importantly... y'all will find experiences that will be eriely close to your own and can learn from others who have already 'been-there-done-that'.
The difference is...Freedom to discuss and question just about anything that has ever crossed your minds...you'll find answers and you'll find your own direction...

question: why are humans worth more than animals?
by Realist inok putting religious reasoning aside what is a rational reason why humans are viewed worth more than higher animals?
why is a human worth more than lets say a chimp, a pig or a cow?.
neurophysiological studies show that animals suffer probably just as much as humans....but similar to little children they cannot understand the pain and express it as human adults can.

There is a natural pecking order to things, I believe it came about thru creation.
Mankind is at the top, because of our intelligence of course...but, also, as has been said...we have a conscience. No other animal except us, will group together to protect other animals against predation by our own species. That alone shows that as a species, we have the role as caretakers.
That being said...we're not doing too good of a job historically, we are becoming planet killers...there is close to 100 extinctions per day -- mammal, animal, insect, fishes and others. We have been especially hard historically on the most intelligent animals like the whales and primates.
Animals have no problem hunting and eating other animals, because it is natural to survival. They also will occasionally hunt humans, because of this WE should help ourselves and them...by staying out of their territory. If we get eaten by a shark, crocidile, grizzly or polar bear or lions or tigers...it's our own fault. Usually, humans are not hunted, but if we are perceived as a threat against their babies...all bets are off...just like us. We, after all are smart enough to know they live there.
As far as us eating other animals, I think it's OK as long as it's death is as humane as possible (i.e. what does a deer go thru when attacked and killed by a Mountain Lion?) as humans...if we shoot the deer...death is almost instantanious -- not so with predator/prey.
I don't hunt any more, when I did I had a hard fast rule -- I never killed anything I did not intend to eat myself or in some cases the 'waste' parts would be eaten by my dogs. They better not expect me to go to war...lol
I have a daughter who is a Vegan, no animal products at all...it works for her well. Sometimes I think I'd like to do that, too. But, I like Chicken Fried Steak, too.
So, yeah... Humans are worth more (some humans) than animals, but as caretakers, we need to manage them properly and humanely.

It's hard to know what to say...sometimes...sometimes, I feel so ashamed of my gender. It seems almost every 'bad' act by a human is because of a male. I know we aren't all bad, I know I'm not. I just don't understand the how or why...so many men are 'that' way.
I am sorry.
I hope there is something that can be done...charges filed...his relatives or friends...informed? As to what kind of dangerous low-life he is..?
