Physical abuse was taught and openly practiced by many people up until recent decades. The WT has changed their view on this at about the same pace as most of US society. They did NOT teach people to "beat their children", they taught them to discipline their children with physical and negative punishment (which I disagree with), which is what the majority of people were doing at the time anyway. So when it comes to this topic, you should have as much contempt for the average american parent in the 50's and 60's as you do for the WT.

I think though that you have to consider how these attitudes, even though out of print, have prevailed through JW culture to this day.
I forgot to comment on the main topic of the thread....these attitudes are HARDLY exclusive to JW's. I think you can effectively replace JW with U.S. and it would be just as accurate.

child having her buttocks being severally beaten outside at the side of the KH building in plain view of me across the street from the church parking lot. The sight of this sickened me. I wanted to beat the crap out of him, but I knew I'll end up in jail and I am just one witness to this brutal act. It would be his word against mine. Plus she was wearing thick diapers, so her buttocks would only be redden and I doubt it would have left any bruises.
So if the child was wearing thick diapers and would have only had a red bottom as opposed to bruises then it sounds to me more like spanking rather than beating. Granted that spanking has become semi-controversial, the use of it should be left up to the parents rather than to self appointed social police.
Conversely...
pain (via a red bottom) is the only language a child understands.
I completely disagree with this. Although I am not "anti-spanking" I do not spank my children who are 4 and 5 and they are very well behaved. There are plenty of different types of postivie disciplines that children understand. Spanking is just the easiest discipline with the quickest result (but lacks long term results) and that is why so many parents resort to it.

The Trinity
by meadow77 intop reasons the wts is lying about the trinity.
their translation of john 1:1 is not only a complete farce but falls apart upon closer examination of their own beliefs.
the insertion of the phrase a god, instead of god is just a clear misinterpretation.

Islam's Ugly Assault on Beauty
by NewYork44M inan interesting column from the ayn rand institute concerning the recent world beauty contest in nigeria.. http://www.aynrand.org/medialink/columns/rt112702.shtml.
one paragraph stood out:.
"but the most revealing element of this islamic attack was a slogan chanted by rioters: "down with beauty.

I think I understand Expat's point. It is not that he is specifically trying to defend Islam as much as he is trying to point out the root of the problem is not Islam, but lack of human development and rights in certain parts of the world. Islam is simply the catalyst for acceptable violence. The same has been true for Christianity in times past in other parts of the world. With this said, however, without having studied Islam, it does seem to be a very GOOD catalyst for provoking violence, maybe even better than Christianity. But at the same time I recognize that as an assumption and not a conclusion unless I am willing to spend the time really looking into Islam.

You said "None of this makes me or anyone else in this area comfortable with having these people in my country." Perhaps they are saying the same thing about you...What makes this country more your's than it does their's?

From the article he seems to have been in a Satanic Cult, not a JW. Not exactly sure how this thread is relevant to the board, but it is sad that modern laws are so lenient on pedophiles.

and ill again point out that the child claimed to be forced into breastfeeding
Actually, it was the babysitter who said this so it is only second hand to the authorities. The mother states that it was of his own free will and the article does not give any reports of the authorities saying otherwise. Below is the clip I refer to:
his babysitter thought differently and called a child-abuse hotline after Kyle then 5 years old and in the first grade allegedly said he wanted to stop breast-feeding but "Mommy wouldn't let me."
I'm not really interested in discussing the morals of breast feeding older children. I am interested in a government agency that strips a mother of her child for 6 months. The fact that they returned the child should tell you that someone realized it was a mistake. Court mandated counseling I would agree with, but taking a child away for breastfeeding too long?!?!?! That is ridiculous. -

This ladies actions may not be up to snuff with modern ethics, but it certainly isn't as bad as the idiots who put this child in foster care for 6 months. Which would be more damaging to a child? Breast-feeding to 8 by your own free will...or being seperated from your mother for 6 months? Forget this lady's crazy ideas, they should be writing an article on the the Illinois state's attorney's office and the Department of Children and Family Services.
