ballistic, it's 1 terabit = 1/8 of a terabyte = 125 GB per square inch of polymer film. When released for consumer applications, they will probably be stacked or otherwise made to have a storage surface area much larger than a square inch. Imagine, a terabyte in your pocket!

Oops, correction: that's 1 terabit. Still very impressive though.

http://www.physorg.com/news3361.htmlToshiba has also just unveiled a new battery that can recharge in one minute. This will allow more complete capturing of otherwise wasted energy, for example, in deceleration of cars and trains. Expect ever better hybrid technologies.

FreedomFrog,
And I can't see a loving God EVER sending anyone to hell just because they couldn't find him.
Exactly. The concept the God would destroy someone who didn't believe in him is really strange. Imagine standing before God getting quizzed on why you didn't believe in him....
God: So, why didn't you go to church?
Me: Wha...? Well, I didn't think it was true.
God: Why not?
Me: Because I thought about it carefully, and I honestly didn't think Christianity was rooted in reality.
God: Hmm...Interesting. (Makes a hash mark on a hidden notepad) (To self) Another one not sold on Christianity. (To me) Well, I understand from reading your posts on JWD that you didn't even believe in me?
Me: Wow, you read my posts? Thank you, sir, I'm really flattered.
God: Oh, I was reading H20 for a while, but when the Witnesses would come on there, man, they could be kind of nuts. JWD is more my style. Anyway. So what's up with not believing in me?
Me: Well, sir, there didn't seem to be any convincing evidence that you existed. At least not in the forms proposed by the religions I was aware of.
God: (Laughs) You're telling me. Like I'm some murderous fiend hell-bent on destroying my own creation!
Me: Exactly!
God: Or a panopoly of animal-human hybrids!
Me: Hee hee. Wait, you're not? Just joshin' ya.
God: Or some fat guy whose stomach gives you good luck. Oops, did I say l say luck?
Me: Wow, you're a really great guy, God!
God: Thanks! Hey, you want to go grab a beer someplace? I know this great little dive up the street. Their home-brewed ale is wicked!
And that's seriously how I think it'd go down. If, indeed, there is such a thing as God.

A key difference, slimboyfat, is that there is no such thing as "the apostate worldview." No one here will try to compel you to believe any particular thing. You won't get kicked out if you believe in God, call him Jehovah, or whatever. You will, of course, lose the respect of others if you fail to think critically. But that happens everywhere, and is a good thing, in my opinion.

Hello FF,
How many of you believe in a god? I feel bad that I waiver on this. I WANT so badly to believe (if it's true), but I don't want to be fooled again.
Think of it this way. You are obviously trying as hard as possible to do and believe the right thing. So let's say in the end that you settle on something that seems for all the world to be right, and then you are called to stand before a hypothetical God.
Can he ask you to do any more than you have done? He knows that you have lived and believed in what seemed to be the most reasonable way possible. Would he not rather hold you accountable for living out of accord with your conscience in order to stay in some organization? Would he not be pleased - even proud - that you had the courage and strength to exercise your (presumably) God-given intellect and conscience to make honest decisions in your life?
If there is a God, he knows that I am living in the best way I know how. And that includes exercising my rational mind and concluding that there is no evidence that he exists. I rather hope to be surprised one day. I think we'd both have a good chuckle. And I honestly think a loving creator would be happy with me for doing the right thing based on what I knew at the time.

hooberus, this page describes ME and how we find her date. No mention of chimps. Chimps simply don't have anything to do with this discussion. Please read my article and sources more carefully.

Brava, brava, bravissima!
To say you are well-written would be an incredible understatement. I can scarcely imagine a more powerful, reflective letter. I am sure your words will strike the hearts of their readers, even if only deep inside caverns of repression.
The moment you drop your letters in the box will be one you won't forget.
Welcome to the board!

SNG (an atheist version of high priest, he)
LOL...I guess I've been promoted. Does my payscale go up too?
I'll concur with AlmostAtheist and rem regarding consciousness. I especially liked rem's point about beauty not being spoiled by understanding. On the contrary, I often have more awe for a mechanism I understand. The mysterious aspect might have been removed, but the satisfaction of understanding is a more than adequate replacement.
Another thing to keep in mind when considering phenomena that we do not yet understand is the human tendancy to ascribe such things to supernatural forces. We have always done this. From lightening to earthquakes to volcanoes to crop growth - if we don't know how it works, we tend to throw up our arms and say, "It's God!"
Admittedly, the question of consciousness is surely one of the closest-hitting mysteries we will ever know. But AA makes a good point: Damage the brain and consciousness suffers. This clearly indicates that the goop in our heads is manufacturing our consciousness. Presumably a soul-mind would be unhindered by a little tampering with our physical brain, any more than it would be by us, say, losing a finger.
At the risk of rambling, I'll add one more paragraph. I'm reading Steven Jay Gould's Ever Since Darwin at the moment. On page 27, he muses:
Wonder and knowledge are both to be cherished. Shall we appreciate any less the beauty of nature because its harmony is unplanned? And shall the potential of mind cease to inspire our awe and fear because several billion neurons reside in our skulls?
