I understand that some people have conditions that make their bodies run at less-than-optimal efficiencies. Like I said, if someone has a rip-roarin' metabolism, so walking for 30 minutes burns 1000 calories, it's going to be tough for them to gain weight. If you have a barely glowing metabolim, it'll be tough to come up with the energy to take the walk at all.
What I was trying to correct was the strange hypothesis I see whenever this topic comes up that it is somehow possible to add weight that you do not take in. This simply is physically impossible. If you take in 2000 calories and burn only 1000 (for whatever reason: inactivity, low metabolism, ultra-yoga-meditation, what-have-you), you end up with 1000 calories of "profit" on the balance sheet, which is liable to be stored as fat. But there is no way whatsoever that a diet that consistently matches your caloric expenditures can add fat (except temporarily, if your body burns muscle for energy, but this obviously cannot happen indefinitely).

Bedridden morbidly obese people
by Elsewhere inevery now and then i see a news article about a 600 pound man or woman who is so fat they are bedridden and cannot get out of bed.
they normally need a family member to clean them on a regular basis and feed them.
i once saw an article about a man whos skin had literally bonded with the fabric upholstery of his couch and needed to have to fabric surgically removed.. ive been sitting here wondering.

BIG NEWS Email Clearing House
by Severus inconsider me a player.
i am interested in supporting the "big news" news blitz by coordinating a clearing house of jw email addresses.
most of us have a handful of jw email contacts, others may have whole address books filled of them.

What would be cool is to write a little script that emails a customized individual message to each person, but uses the previous address from the list in the FROM field. This way the email will more than likely be sent to from someone already in their address book and will more often than not bypass SPAM filters.
I could write a script to do something like that in a couple of hours. It would take much longer to send the emails ... but we could send them over the course of several days. I could give one or two others on here access to it as well. Not to throw a wet blanket down, but I don't think this is a good idea. First, it is disengenuous. When people discovered that their friend had not sent them the message, they would be angered. This would not lend credibility to the actual message.
Secondly, mass emails will necessarily be less specific to the recipients, and thus less likely to be taken seriously.
I applaud Severus' idea, but in this case, I think that standard email is the way to go. People will mail the people they know. They can make the recipient lists as broad or specific as they like.
If 10 people sent 10 addresses to a central mail clearing house, 100 mostly identical messages would be sent. Or those 10 people could individually send their own messages, again resulting in 100 messages, but much more finely tuned ones. I think this is a case where your standard "viral marketting" techniques are going to be most effective.
Interstingly, we've had over 35,000 views on the main thread. If that many people send the news to an average of 10 people ( = 350,000) and those people each forward it to 10 more, that would spread the news to 3.5 million. I think we'll do quite well with normal email. Even without limited second-stage emails, we will probably end up reaching something like 1 in 4 Witnesses in the industrialized world.
Just my two cents.

Hmmm....maybe it's actually some kind of illness, where they keep on pilling the pounds even if they eat very little.
That's not physically possible. Your body runs on calories. You take them in when you eat, and you pay them out over the course of the day. It's like accounting. It's not possible to end up with bonus money on the balance sheet that you didn't take in. Obviously, there are some people who have naturally higher metabolism rates, but this effects the "expenditures" side of the balance sheet, not the "revenue" side.
There are 3500 calories in one pound of fat. That means that someone who is 300 pounds overweight has amassed a staggering 1 million calories "in the bank," so to speak.
Your body is the only hardware you have. You've gotta take care of it.

Defeating 'New Light' doctrine... How?
by AlmostAtheist init does little good to point a jw to changing doctrines, since they expect it.
they get all giddy when 'new light' shines on them and they get a clearer understanding of the bible.
even if it is actually a return to what was previously declared 'old light', they still suck it down and smile.. how do you defeat that?

I've been thinking about this deception thing lately. You know why ex-JWs are so motivated? Not because they believed something that happened to be false. Not because they were in the wrong religion. It's something that strikes much deeper than that.
There are few things in this world that infuriate people more than realizing that they have been lied to by someone they trusted. We can accept it when something bad happens. We can accept that not everything in the world turns out peachy all the time. But when we realize that someone we trusted has intentionally deceived us, we rise up in shock and anger. It is a fundamental part of being human.
If this news is truly about deception - and not just deception of "worldy people", but clear, deliberate deception of rank and file Witnesses - I think the reaction will be very, very strong. If I were still a Witness, I would not react kindly when faced with unavoidable evidence that they had intentionally lied to me.
It will be interesting to see what this turns out to be.

why do witnesses call the new testament "greek scriptures"?
by in a new york bethel minute inanybody know how the witnesses managed to demonize the expression, "new testament/old testament"?
my jw mother said "it's because when you call the hebrew scriptures the old testament, it makes them sound out of date, but they're really not because there is so much we can learn from blah blah blah blah blah blah".
any thoughts?.

As seven006 points out, it is an important part of the indotrination process to create an isolated language group. It creates a sense of in-the-group-ness. Here's a quote from an excellent article about the indoctrination process (http://members.aol.com/beyondjw/indoct.htm):
Witness speech features round-about statements, "code" words, idiomatic phrases, and a few neologisms. It would be impossible to pose as a Witness without learning their argot -- your ruse would be detected moments after you opened your mouth.
This is not particularly remarkable. Linguists recognize what they call a "speech community", which encompasses a variety of people who express themselves in a similar manner. The community does not have to inhabit a single location.
The stability of the Witness' speech community is strengthened by the literature. Certain expressions "come into vogue", while others are relegated to the dustbin. During the 1960's, for example, Witnesses would not refer to their group as a "religion" but preferred the term "nation". The term "church" was also considered improper. Several decades later, these terms have been restored to respectability.
Only somebody who is actively involved with the Witnesses can keep up to date with the latest trends in Witness-Speak. By regularly reading the literature and attending their meetings, one can infer which expressions are "in" and which are "out".SNG

Hey Undecided,
It was just a little Sony Cybershot, 3.2 megapixels, a couple years old. It really does a great job. The secret is to turn the flash permanently off, as it totally screws up the lighting. The camera is smart enough to keep the shutter open appropriately, so if you have steady hands, you can take good shots even in low lighting.
I have to say, though, I was envious of my traveling companion's camera. It's basically the same model as mine, but two years newer. The physical interface has some improvements, but the biggy is that it is very slim - about the form factor of a deck of cards. Mine felt like a big old clunker in comparison. Of course, the concept of being able to take great pictures with a camera that (easily) fits in your coat pocket would be unthinkable ten years ago, so I guess I shouldn't be complaining. :-)

Leolaia,
Did you get a JR pass? Only foreigners can get them, and they're really convenient on the Shinkansens.
Yeah, I've heard about these deals. I'll be looking into them next week when my brother and dad come to visit. On this trip, we bought transportation and lodging for four people, including two Japanese friends, as a package, and got a pretty good deal.
Quotes, thanks!
Earthman,
Were you able get to Nara? IMO,it's even more beautiful than Kyoto.
Not yet, although I might go with my family next week. Are you in Japan right now? Whereabouts?

stealyourface,
>> The last picture of the alleyway, is that in the Gion district?
Yes, although it might be a bit too far north to be in Gion proper. But it is close to that area.
