Jacques Derrida is dead
by Narkissos infrench philosopher jacques derrida died yesterday in paris, at the age of 74. .
he was a very original and profound thinker, widely known for his "deconstruction" theory which brought about some pretty fresh outlooks on philosophy, language and literature.
i unfortunately discovered his works much too late, but he was very helpful to me in my post-religious ramblings in the past few years.

Anarchism and Christianity
by Narkissos in.
nietzsche wrote anarchists and christians were of the same kind, because of their rejection of reality (as he saw it).
he hated both and was at the same time fascinated by both.. french author andre malraux wrote that jesus was the only successful anarchist.. french essayist jacques ellul, who was a protestant and is still very influential in the "alternative movement", wrote an essay entitled "anarchy and christianity", where he tried to show the convergence and difference between the two ideologies.. what do you think?

Can we really overcome violence?
by Narkissos inmuch of "civilisation" has been about limiting, channeling, repressing or sublimating violence.. the ancient shift from personal revenge to institutional justice and punishment, and from collective to individual responsibility (as attested in the bible and many other cultures) was a decisive step.
in modern times (at least in europe) the emphasis shifted from punishment to correction and rehabilitation.
we now track down violence where it was admitted a few decades ago (domestic or professional abuse, etc.).

Kingdom Songs
by Narkissos inlistening to chopin's nocturnes reminds me that there was one kingdom song (sorry i don't remember the title or number, and the french lyrics i have in mind wouldn't help), still sung in the 80's, which clearly borrowed the melody of nocturne # 4 in f major.
there were many more "worldly tunes" in the former songbooks, but they had been either suppressed or modified to make the themes less recognisable (e.g.
beethoven's appassionata theme in a song about noah if i remember correctly).. are those songs still sung?
