  As I previously said, the best a translator can do when translating an ambiguous passage is to do so in the sense he believes to be true and consistent. The passage in Colossians 1 is ambiguous. All a translator can do is to translate it in the sense he believes was intended by the original writer.

  Im refering specifically to Col 1:16 not verse 15. "firstborn is prototokos" I dont have a problem either way, "preeminence" and "priority in time" that is. Although "preemince" when reading seems to fit with the following word "creation."

  This is the question, what did Christ create? All things or all [other] things? The latter relagating Christ role in creation.

  EW..But you want it with Neb starting at 624 and are unable to reach 539 with the Societys years of rule.

  Because of this fact, the Society has established a shifting numbers game to align 1914 and nothing more.

  I prefer a chronology that is based on solid biblical and secular evidence as presented by WT chronology.

  If the Societys list is "problematic" what makes it "solid evidence"?

  Btw, nowhere does Graysons work "shore up" WT chronology.

  By the way the Society and Furuli use Grayson as an authority in support of a different claim so your elder friend should not be distressed but simply needs to do more research.

  A different claim? Whats that? And why are'nt these kings lists made to be plain and simple and easy to understand for the R/F? Without any reseearch.

  BTW Ive rattled my elder study over chronology to the point he actually went on-line and ordered A.K. Graysons' chronology book that is referenced in the Insight Vol. I chronology section. And there it was in black and white a book filled with refutations of the FDS' chronology list. Hmmmmm.

  elderwho........... The list of Neo-Babylonian rulers that I posted is simply what has appeared in recent WT publications, Where some authorities have different figures then I use 'proposed' and a question mark to indicate that the data is problematic.

  If the WT has established as you suggest, than why is it problematic?
  

  ET chronology uses biblical and secular evidence to establish the beginning of Neb's reign in 624 and not 604 as you suggest, if the data has a gap this is because there are some problems with the secular data and not the date for Neb's reign.

  I agree with the Babylon book but I based these figure on the latest Insight volumes. If I was writing for a professional source I would have taken more time and checked everything but as this is an informal board and I wished to respond quickly so my list was submitted in haste but it gives a broad outline for the period.

  If you agree with the Babylon Book then your contradicting your proposed list.
  

  However, with all the time needed there still has been no response to my requests for an alternative chronology so perhaps you should begin to focus on an alternative if in fact yo believe that Neb reigned in 604.

  Neil Ive asked you for a list. You gave me a "sorta list" with many options.

  Nebs reign fits with 605 to 587, Eighteenth year(destruction) and "plug in" the Babylon book years given of reign for the rest of the kings and you wind up with 539BC. no problem.

  But you want it with Neb starting at 624 and are unable to reach 539 with the Societys years of rule.

  Which thus far has been un-answerable for you. Why do you think I keep asking for your list, maybe its unfair because I know you cannot produce one from the Societys literature.

  If your going to give a list, give a list. Not some question mark or maybees or proposes.

  PS: why would the Society quote A.K. Grayson and not quote his kings list?

  WT chronology has established the reigns for the Neo-Bablonian dynasty beginning with Nebuchadnezzar: Nebuchadnezzer reigned 43 years fro Nisan 624-582 Evil Merodach reigns of 2 and 18 years proposed,- 581 -? Neriglissar reigns of 2, 4, 18 years proposed ? labashi-Marduk reign of 9 months - ? Nabonidus reign of 17 years - 566- 539

  The book "Babylon the great has fallen" page 184 fills in the proposed years of reign that you have in question.

  "begins rule in 580 B.C." (Evil-marodach)

  Evil-merodach, two years 578 BC

  Neriglassar, four years 574 BC

  Labashi-Marduk, nine months 574 BC

  Nabonidus "a glorious rule till 539 B.C." ( or 34 years rule)

  The only way the WT list above works is if Nebuchadrezzars' rule begins in 605 not 624.

  Which would then give Nabonidus the 17 years you gave him.

  Its interesting that you use the word "proposed" and a ? mark, this would indicate that your really not sure, and you have to assume the missing years to fit doctrinal implications (1914)

  Will you not accept what the FDS has put out in written literature such as the book "Babylon the Great" to fill in the questionable years of rule?

  To the average person without any background in neo-Babylonian studies will gladly accept what the FDS has put forth, subsquently 1914 making perfect sense.

  So the WT has not "established" years rule.

  Its still your turn.

  for me it was the realization that there was no "faithful & discreet slave", that all the prophecies "proving" that jehovah's witnesses are the only religion approved by god is bogus and the realization that this is a "cult" and there is no real normal sense of love and affection in the "truth".

  Are you kidding? What does a Jw conclude after reading Colossians 1:16.NWT How about 2 Peter 1 " by the righteousness of our God and [the] Savior Jesus Christ" NWT. See also KIT

  Titus 2:13 " glorious manifestation of the great God and of [the] Savior of us, Christ Jesus. NWT.

  Note: the KIT shows strongs #4990 as "of savior" in both Peter and Titus, is that not misleading or biased? This is done to convey the thought of seperation of "great God and savior" thus the word "of" is inserted along with brackets for the word "the" these little things done in the NWT, you consider this "to appreciate the breadth of meaning"?

  When Col.1:16 is read without brackets a Jw has to reconcile what Christ has created.

  I asked the same of you. About your neo-Babylonian kings list. With years of reign. Your reply was not a answer but you responded with "show me your list of Judean kings and I'll show you mine".

  I'd be very interested in your list although off topic here.

  If you so sure of the WT chronology make it work for me. Show me from 625 bc to 539 bc. who ruled and for how long. Your scholarly credentials should help you provide this.

  Alan, I agree Ive just read the thread. If Scholar(Neil) ever gets around to writing anything, I'd love to see what his peers have to say.
