yeah, overpaying the mortgage will save tens of thousands and get rid of what is often the biggest debt much sooner - the faster you can get that balance down so that you are repaying chunks of capital and not just interest the better.

It amazes me how many people in the UK seem to think the mortgage is a free pot of money that they can re-borrow upto - I think there will be a generation of people who forgot that the whole point of a mortgage is that it's supposed to be paid off at some point.

I'm concentrating on paying off debts (should be done this year, hence my comments on starting work on the pension next year ), improving my education (working on my MBA) and climbing the career ladder.

I finally feel like I'm getting on track, assuming the ex doesn't attempt to take me to the cleaners in the divorce

I changed careers 3 years ago mostly for the benefits and opportunity to participate in 401k retirement savings.

When I got a raise, ALL of it went to retirement savings. I have maxed-out my contribution 3 years in a row now and am so pleased with myself for this.

Like the others have said: Pay yourself FIRST. And like others have commented, I don't miss it because I don't see it. -- Until I get my quarterly statement. Then I look in the mirror and see this:

Some friends and family make comments about my not buying new furniture and the 'used' 2003 car that I bought last year but I don't mind. I know where my money is going. It's time to make hay while the sun is still shining!!

Of all the reasons to hate them this one is in the top two (and I won't even mention the doctrinal issues).

This was my pet peeve with them. I was a single woman on the fringes of the congregation because I had to work full time. I was always criticized and whispered about and got "advice" that I should clean houses. Yeah, I am a citizen with an education and I should clean toilets? It was even mentioned that "better people than me clean houses for a living". Well, that isn't the point. It is about money and planning for the future, which they don't do. But what REALLY got me was that even though they don't believe in work OR education, they expected to benefit from the fact that you HAD a job. Yeah, these same people who looked down on me because I work for a living and wasn't out ringing doorbells with them thought I owed people something BECAUSE I worked!! Surely, you have heard the nonsense they parrot about "supporting the pioneers"? Well, I didn't leave the Catholic Church to support any wanna-be clergymen (or women).

I can't tell you how many young people I advised to go to college NOW while they are young and not listen to anybody's nonsense!

They have no ACCOUNTABILITY for the harm they have caused and the lost time that can never be gotten back for those who are now in middle age or older who are frantically playing a game of catch-up and cannot possibly fix the problem totally (even if they saved every nickel).

The sadest thing is that if you didnt go to college, and have no skills, and work for yourself for years, what the heck do you do? Do I go at age 38? Then you add kids on top of that, it its even harder yet. Never too late, may be true, if you knew where to start.

If you are only 38 it is not too late to do something. You can go to night school. Yes, it will be hard but if you are determined you can do something. True, it won't be as if you are 23 but you can still accomplish something.

    Look into this.

I'm 38, work fulltime (+ some extra) and have 2 kids. I'm doing university courses in my spare time to get additional qualifications. It isn't easy ... but it is nowhere near being impossible.

I was told by the Elders n my cong in 1974 that if I joined a company pension fund then I could never be a MS or E - or even used on the mikes, as I was approaching apostacy because I was putting the world first - I beleived them

When I bought my first house in 1981 I was told I was setting a bad example and being materalistic - and I told them it was non of their business.

No MS for me that year (rebellious etc).

So I then did my own thing financially after that

Hmmm, ok, I really am starting to think about this. I have three kids, and a single mom! I have always at least wanted to get a job that has possibilities! But neglected, due to picking up all the kids from school, homework, and such. But I want a life! I want to make real money, and be able to say "I did this"!!!! Im just really afraid to take the step forward, since I really dont have the extra support I feel I need! (could be because i have always counted on someone?)
