My first thought was Kentucky, too. Luna2 beat me 2 it.
I have lived in WV and MA and it could have easily been either of these places---Adirondacks or Berkshires! But KY popped into my mind first.

hillbilly state it looks like next guess would be TN but they have bigger mountains while west of KY it starts getting flat

BillyGoat, it's interesting you should mention Mark Twain. I read Huck Finn for the first time last year and it was one the best books I've ever read. Twain's critique of James Fennimore Cooper's works is also a hilarious read, but Huck Finn has to rank as Twain's greatest work of genius.
