There are varying interpretations on what the Bible is saying as regards punishment for the wicked. Some believe "hell" is purely symbolic of eternal destruction like the JWs teach, some believe it is everlasting conscious punishment for the wicked and is permanent separation from God, some believe it is a temporary condition for the wicked that ends at the Last Judgment when hell and the wicked are destroyed. Obviously the eternal conscious torment interpretation is the most prevailing in mainstream Christian churches and other religions.

You might get a couple of books and read up on it.

"The Fire That Consumes" by Edward Fudge is a pretty exhaustive study of the subject and it used to be published by Commentary Press.

Hell is a scare tactic used by "Christian" leaders to keep their flock in line.
