Elsewhere has some excellent advice. One slip of the scalpel and not even Viagra can fix it.

Also make sure you get a PCA (Patient Controlled Analgesia) for post operative pain control, and use ice packs to minimize swelling and bruising. Whatever you are offered for pain control, take it. If what you are getting for pain relief isn't covering it, tell the nurse you need more of what you're getting or something stronger.

Hope the operation goes well and you're back home soon.

Once you find a good surgeon, I'm sure you'll be fine. Nowadays many men are experiencing this. But I would make sure that all the alternatives are explored before you get someone to cut into you. There are tons of different meds for BHP out there. If one doesn't work, perhaps another?

I think I waited too long before I tried the herbal BHP meds. I have been catheterized for over two weeks and when it is removed I still can't pee. I guess I only have one choice now, surgery. The urologist goes through the penis with a cutting tool and chips away pieces of the prostate. It takes several weeks to get back to normal. He showed me a video of how it all is supposed to work. You can still have sex but no children. Don't want any more children at my age anyway. Sex is an option, not a necessity like it was when I was younger, so if I can pee I will be happy.

    Thanks for the good wishes.

I heard nightmare stories about cath. and men..was it a really painful procedure? It sounds horrible

It's really not that bad, it only hurts for a few seconds while it is being driven into you bladder. I can put up with that OK.

I will be in the hospital for 3 or 4 days if everything goes normally, there is some risk of bleeding after you go home and it will take a month or more before you can do anything much around the house. I like mowing the yard, don't know how long before I can start back to my normal routine.
