TROOPS

We keep hearing that troops are being deployed, or troops are entering some area, etc, etc. I've heard of Scout troops and the like---meaning a "group" of people doing a particular thing or activity.

I asked hubby how many people form a "troop" when we hear these announcements, and he said that one person is considered a "troop". Is this right? (I won't tell him he's wrong if he is )

    Any thoughts out there?

"troop" is one........troops is plural. Military units are standard sizes and the Small units make up larger units... the whole composite has a chain-of command. Smaller units like Companies, Platoons and Squads can work alone or in co-ordination with other units based on chain of command decisions.

Calling one guy a "troop" is sorta military slang. "Troopers" in the US are Horse Cav.... of course the Army hasnt had a "working horse" since the late 40's so "trooper" gets bantered about a bit.

Here, this may shed some obfuscatory murk on it -

    troop
    1. an assemblage of persons or things; company; band.
    2. a great number or multitude: A whole troop of children swarmed through the museum.
    3. Mil. an armored cavalry or cavalry unit consisting of two or more platoons and a headquarters group.

    platoon
    1. a military unit consisting of two or more squads or sections and a headquarters.

    squad
    1. a small number of soldiers, commonly 10 privates, a staff sergeant, and a corporal; the smallest military unit.

So a squad is about 12 guys, a platoon would be 24 or more, and a troop would be 48 or more.

I and not sure but i find it hard to believe 1 person is a troop . I would think at least 6 would be a troop.

Annie i know you are so kind as to not tell him he is wrong ..................Hee hee

It's military slang, kls. Kind of a shortened form of "trooper". I heard my ex use it all the time when talking to individuals. God, I hate the military. LOL Sorry ....had a flashback.

What applies more is the word TROUPE, meaning an acting group, or performing group- that hits the JW nail right on the head.
