Moxy, my first impression of what you refer to as the “doorknob” looked to me like an electric doorbell!
Also, is it just me, or does it look like the guy in the blue pin strip area rug has a subliminal face of Chuck “The Huckster” Russell drawn on the back of his left hand?

I also thought it was a thought balloon for the woman. And by the look on her face, it seemed she was thinking, "Hmmm...he looks about 12 inches..."
