I thought about something while reading Scoobys thread on ex-jw websites, but didn't want to post it on there because that thread has went off on a totally different tangent.
I've always been taught that the best form of defense is attack, so it be in the best interests of the wbts to go on the attack against apostates. Could they do this by setting up a fake apostate website? It could be full of misinformation, sensationalism, etc, so that any witness who views it will think that what they have been told about apostates is true and so most will not bother looking any further and find the real truth. It could also be used in talks about apostasy at assemblies, stating things that apostates are saying but using stories that originated on their own website and can be proven to be false, and so discrediting real reports that people will read about tragedys that have happened.
Would it be technically possible for the wbts to start something like this and get it up to a level where it got enough traffic to be effective? How likely do you think they would be to try something like this, and how well do you think it would work?
*Please Note* This is a purely speculative thing, and don't think for a minute that this has actually happened and draw anything away from the pain that has come from some very real tragedies.
