The former Iraqi governments have not empowered their citizens with the same constitutional rights that are available here in the US, in fact, that is part of the reason we are there...to bring a more democratic system with more protections to their country

Its the US that is locking these people up. I think trying to blame a former and now non-existent government for these detentions is clutching at straws.

There is also a war going on and in the interest of the overall safety of both the civilians and the sodiers fighting there is a certain amount of sacrifice...whether it is a curfew, martial law and temporarily detaining people to identify them and their loyalties.

The war was entirely the choice of the US - it shouldn't have embarked on a half-assed scheme with a half-brained plan.

However, how exactly does detaining innocent women and young children make the US soldiers safe? If anything it puts them at much greater risk because it inflames the undecided.

... but then I don't imagine for one minute that Bush and Rumsfeld are at all interested in peace - they want war, it suits thir agenda.

Age does not denote innocence... This article didn't seem a bit biased to you Simon? This could have come straight from brooklyn!

    Simon,

As I said I don't disagree in the least that INNOCENT people should not be imprisoned. I think however that innocence is not always entirely obvious during a conflict and detentions to identify people and check their stories happens.

Certainly those involved with the 9-11 attacks appeared innocent enough as they walked through security at the Boston airport here just a couple of hours from my home but if they had been stopped and detained until their stories could be checked...papers verified...there might have a much different outcome for the safety of the 3000 plus innocent civillians killed in the attack.

As to the war being entirely on the USA....sometimes leaders need to make decisions that are unpopular or that many don't understand, since the public doesn't have access to all the facts. But they have to do it because, based on the information they have...it is the right thing to do.

Obviously we don't agree on this topic and I respect your thoughts and understand why you think as you do. I'm not here to fight...just offering my opinion.

Actually it come straight from the nightly news and I wish it were not the case. As for being biased... I certainly have my opinion but don't deny anyone else from the right to disagree. Doesn't sound biased to me.

Do you think it's acceptable for the US to imprison CHILDREN as young as 11 years old ?!?!

What was the 11 year old doing to get thrown into the jail. I know some 11 year olds that if they egg my house or vandalize my car one more time...

Does the behaviour of drunken US soldiers assaulting a 17 year old girl make them undisciplined yobs?

That's disgusting. I hope they smack the soldier who did that to her hard. We should be better than that, and I know honorable soldiers who would have beaten his ass if they'd have caught others doing anything like that to a young girl. I have to wonder though what she did to get thrown into the jail?

Well, I hope they prosecute them and give them a suitable sentance.

Ah, the old "well they must be guilty because they are locked up" argument? It's the same reason that the US gets away with detaining people in Guantanamo bay - they give the impression that being held there is guilt enough.

    Note from the article:

In her interview with Maj Gen George Fay, she also said intelligence officers had worked out an agreement to hold detainees without keeping records.

This indicates to me that they knowingly attempted to pervert justice. There can be no valid reason for doing this.

    Also:

In her interview, she said Maj Gen Walter Wodjakowski, then the second most senior army general in Iraq, told her in the summer of 2003 not to release more prisoners, even if they were innocent.

This is the crux of the matter. The US has got into a mindset of imprisoning people and then refusing to admit it's mistakes. It has very very poor intelligence (if you can call it that) and yet bases a whole lot of (mis)action on it.

It will come back and bit you in the ass !!

Don't worry, Simon, someone here probably will.

Yes, it seems that some people cannot see any wrong as long as it is draped in stars and stripes.

These are likely the same people who rushed to the polls to re-elect Bush. They probably still have Bush bumper stickers on their cars. Thank goodness that at least half the country doesn't support this insane presidential admin and its very bad war and diplomatic policy.

Sooooo, that's why your bumper stickers always look brand spankin' new and it's not because they are divinely protected. I have had my eyes opened.
