    Copyright laws in the US says that if an item is written and can be proved to have been written by a person, etc., then it is automatically covered under copyright law. Cost of sales for duplicate copyright infringed documents can be recovered sans legal fees. If an item is registered with the patent and copyright office, then no only cost of duplicated info can be recovered, but also cost of legal fees. The use of "copyright 1900-2005" is not necessary on any document to be covered under copyright laws.

    Did they copyright in the 1st century.

    The first century christians were preaching, not selling cheap-ass literature for a publishing company that masquerades as a religion.

    Now it's all about the $$

    badboy....if such a thing as copyright existed then, and if Paul and the other writers copyrighted their letters and sued anyone who dared make their own copy of the text, there'd be no New Testament to speak of today...

    Are not the citations on Quotes's website legally considered "fair use"???

    This is a really good article on the Fair Use doctrine by then Provost Condoleeza Rice.

    http://fairuse.stanford.edu/stanford_notices/rice.html

    Here is an excerpt,

    The "fair use" doctrine allows limited reproduction of copyrighted works for educational and research purposes.... reproduction "for purposes such as criticism, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research" is not an infringement of copyright.

    Here are the main points that should be considered in determining fair use:

    the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
    the nature of the copyrighted work;
    the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole, and
    the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.

    The last factor is the most important as this article goes on to say:

    Although all of these factors will be considered, the last factor is the most important in determining whether a particular use is "fair." Where a work is available for purchase or license from the copyright owner in the medium or format desired, copying of all or a significant portion of the work in lieu of purchasing or licensing a sufficient number of "authorized" copies would be presumptively unfair. Where only a small portion of a work is to be copied and the work would not be used if purchase or licensing of a sufficient number of authorized copies were required, the intended use is more likely to be found to be fair.

    In the case of Quotes site, since you would still need to purchase the source material from the Watchtower in order to read the entire article, this would be considered fair use. Fair Use allows you to site passages and references as in any research article, but not the entire content.
