Perhaps we are a little OTT here. I have it on good authority from someone who went to Moscow whith the WT organised package to attend the assembly in 1993.... They were escorted on the official tour of the Kremlin. In there is what was presented as the highest cathedral of the Russian Orthadox Church and the W T tour took them all around the spooky old place .

Perhaps dubs are not so superstitious about church buildings as we sometimes think. Certainly I have seen plenty of holiday pics and videos by dubs of cathedrals, and Vatican City on their holidays

But to go to one to perform an act of worship???? That would be a different story...

I remember getting alot of flak from my workmates about discussing why I could go to the reception and not the wedding of worldly friends when invited.

Not to get personal, but this really gets my goat when this happens. Attending a reception and not the wedding is in terribly bad taste, IMO. The guest couldn't carve out time for the sacred event, but had time for the party? I just don't get it. I think it's rude as hell. But then again, as JWs we justified any type of rude behavior with "following the will of Jehovah". I'm realizing more and more that the term "etiquette" was not something I ever really understood until I left the Borg. Politeness was never really part of the JW life in our household. I'm 33 and still learning my manners.

It bothers me a little I guess... Catholic churches are spooky in my opinion. I never felt guilty going to a wedding or fueral at a different church. Maybe I never had a good "christian heart" but that was their wishes and belives not mine is the way I viewed it. I have attended mass with my gf and that is weird. You sit there for a hour and learn nothing. 90% I am wondering if the are praying or singing or what. The whole mass is really weird.

Catholic masses were a little weird to me too when I first started attending. But I realized it as I was raised in a very sheltered home. I'm sure any Catholic would go to a Kingdom Hall and think it just as strange. If you listen to the silence and the singing, you'll learn to appreciate the quiet reverance and the beauty of voices in time. Learning to respect the beauty of EVERYTHING is really key.

    Thanks for the interesting replies.

However, as Brenda Cloutier said < I just knew I was going to be struck down in some nasty way. I finally touched and opened the door.>

As I surmised, some of you were terrified, but no one said why they felt that way.

Who told you that "something electrifying" would happen?

Is this what you made up in your own minds?

Was there anything written in the W.T. or Awake magazines that announced this?

Despite the standing, sitting, standing, kneeling, routine of the Catholic Mass, I enjoyed it more than a JW meeting. Even as a child, I could sit in there and feel soothed by the ambience, or enjoy the acoustics. I liked how we would offer those around us in the pews peace and shake each others hands.

I went to a beautiful church in Mexico. It kinda gave me the creeps though. They show the virgin mary alot. Jesus with blood all over him. I have to say for the Witnesses the kingdom halls are alot less creepy. I never got struck down by lightning though.
