    Remains

    It had once been whole

    Maybe not perfect but whole

In 1964, it had dings dents and chips that went deep.

    Cracking that covered everything

As if it were layered with the finest of spiders web

It was just accepted at face value

Presented as if there were no imperfections

1982, when I was 18 the cracking went too deep, it shattered

    Pieces lay around me scattered

Edges sharp, jagged, revealing the lie

Cut again and again and again

I still walk among the shards

Edges glint with memories that slice

    Now just debris

    I walk among the shards

Surrounded by the remains of my shattered family

    Forged

    We walk among the embers

    Sure of the pain.

The fire flares from time to time

    Scorching us, we are blackened.

    Through it all,

    These embers have cured us,

    Tempered us.

    We are not brittle.

    We do not break.

You surprised me with the ending. Cool.

When I first read it, I thought you were talking about a toy or something left over from childhood and then I came on the phrase "shattered family", so went back and re-read it twice with that in mind.

    Good job.

Awwww ((((Sheila))) thanks for adding the forged segment that is an awesome addition.Like glass... I'm thinking me here used to be like the new dollar drinking glass you can buy and bump it one time and what do you have a bunch of broken pieces to clean up....but when glass has been around awhile ages (Like me) and it sits in the heat/fire long enough it just gets stronger and takes more knocks and bangs that way.Survives the heat so to speak.
