  LOL Stefanie, looks like you and I share the same fear..........Sharks! I hate swimming in the Ocean for that simple reason. I keep as close to the shore as possible.

  Since I wouldn't be able to swim very far I think I'd be more afraid of jellyfish.

  Australian Susie Maroney swam a record 197 km (122 miles) from Mexico to Cuba, covering the longest distance ever swum without flippers in open sea. She completed the marathon water journey in 38 hours and 33 minutes, arriving in Cuba on June 1, 1998.

  I have no idea, nor do I ever want to put it to the test.

  One of my favorite MAGNUM P.I. episodes is when Magnum is surfing from one island to another and gets knocked off his board and treads water for over 12 hours. His interior monologue makes note of the idea that the worlds record for treading water might be some guy who never made it out of the ocean because no one found him. The longest swim in the world may have been accomplished by someone who drowned and couldn't tell their story.
